How do you download a specific size of a photo/video in the new theme? I always get the original.

    Malte

Go to lightbox and choose the size you want, and drag it to your desktop? How about that?

I notice that the "Arrange by Number" function is missing. Has this been quietly dropped?

I saw my existing web site--on which I worked very hard to get the background colors I prefer--in the new theme with the black background. I don't have time to peruse the 22 pages in this thread, so if my question was already answered, can someone please answer it again?
Question: Will we be forced to used the black background as shown in the preview?

No! CSS customisation will be available, as now, but based on the new design - as I understand it! thumb.gif

    Thank you for responding!
To anyone at SM reading this, I was only able to use CSS, etc., after many weeks of help from the wonderful, patient SM volunteers. For the non-html people like me, redoing all that stuff would be a major time-consuming headache.
Just because something is new, doesn't necessarily mean it is better for everyone. Why can't current Smugger sites be "grandfathered in" for anyone who wants to keep them as is??
And I just happened to notice this thread - I wonder if most Smuggers are even aware of the planned changes. It's easy to miss an announcement in the email release notes, and not everyone is glued to DGRIN!

I agree with all this wholeheartedly from a creative/artisitc standpoint. It is time for SM to modernize the way galleries are designed with more options than the old thumbnails on the left, photo on the right split look. There are simply so many more creative ways to layout a professional looking gallery and portfolio. I think its fine if that same old look is an option. But everyone doesn't want to be shoehorned into that single layout only. For me this is smugmug's single biggest artistic design challenge, to break out of the old mold.

Here is one good example of a very effective, classy looking minimal layout from Squarespace: http://www.jamesklotz.com/

Note how easy it is on James' site to get to photos and how little clutter is present in doing so. The larger thumbs going right into a single larger image would be a really nice, clean change for many on SM including myself.

I have just checked your landscape photography website - beautiful photos!

OK, I thought it would be about time for me to have a look at the new stuff.

BUT, I can't figure out how to accomplish that.

I hit the join button.............many times :D nothing!

    I read the instructions................???

I did read: If you use a custom URL, hit 'Join' on www.smugmug.com and on your custom domain, too.

I have no idea how to do this????

Can anyone give me real simple instructions?

    Thanks!!

Still no navigation arrows to go to the next/previous picture. Is this going to be an option we can enable or are you just taking it away without comment?

Can we get an answer to this please? I know you guys are busy over at SmugMug but if you are aware of the several requests for this and are at least talking about it please respond. Right now it looks like the subject is being ignored entirely.

Not sure what the urgency is, since this is closed to only a few folks here on DGrin, so customers, etc are not impacted at all (plus you can turn it off). Frankly, from the looks of it, this is v0.1. I think they have much work to do, and so I am happy to add my opinions, and hope that they get considered.

Regarding the 'next' button: I feel the next image button is redundant...you can simply click the next picture in the set. The next button only let you go to the next photo, not any photo, so this is very redundant, and doesn't add any usability. I can understand where you perhaps used this as place to navigate without moving your mouse, that makes sense...but the arrow keys on the keyboard work better for that use case imho.

I do miss the "Pages" where you could go to 'Page 1 of 3", but this has been reproduced at the bottom of the thumbnails in Apple-like dots that allow you to go to other pages. Not sure what happens in really large galleries.

Hi Dave, Onethumb (our CEO & Chief Geek) has posted a few times here that we're reading all the input and taking it all in - and iterating the new gallery style (we've already done that once). More to come, thanks!

This a very good but missed point with this pre-alpha testing we are able to participate in. SM is to be commended for providing us this opportunity. Some posters look at this as if its locked in stone already which I don't think was the original intent in providing us a preview of things to come. Rather it was to allow us to be engaged in the process.

Many of us are passionate about our web galleries. And for me personally I am cheering for SM to get even better and go to the next level in terms of a photo hosting company. But I also realize that while they can listen to feedback they cannot encorporate every change request made. So SM please view my input as suggestions. Hopefully it is good food for thought when looking at the larger picture. If I were to distill my recommendations down the two biggest things would be:

    1. More thumb size options
    2. More layout options for the main gallery thumb/image page - beyond thumbs to the left, image to the right. A separation of an independent thumbs page and the primary image would be great in terms of adding design flexibility. A thumbs to the right option would be cool as well.

Only comment I have is that I looked at the new design.. and agree that it's pretty neat -- very smooth -- but more than a bit confusing when it comes to finding what I need to manage/edit the gallery itself or individual photos. Until I'm able to customize (whatever little customization I actually do on) my site to remove the in-my-face "Buy" button at the top right, I'll happily putz along with the existing SmugMug default.

help - i'm stuck in the "Beta" style and can't get out!
I went into "goodies" and hit Leave...but I'm still there....

BTW, the gallery style looks good in viewing, but it's horrible to use as the owner. Maybe it's getting used to, but the hunting around to make changes is really hard.

Oh nooo, its like Hotel California. You can check out any time you'd like. But you can never leave. eek7.gif11doh.gif

More seriously though try closing then opening a new browser after clicking on Leave.

Thanks Andy. As I've said, short of a few niggles I really like the overall look and what's been said about making customization easier. I'm in software myself and I know it can be a long process. Thanks for listening.

I asked them to explain the "join" & "leave" process for custom domains more clearly to people; i.e. show an example of exactly what you need to do if you have a custom domain. But they still did not do this, & of course, predictably, lots of people are stumped & then have to come here trying to get answers. SmugMug, just a simple clear example would really help on those sign-up pages. It would take someone at Smug 3 minutes to do this & save lots of people lots of time. This statement: "Note that if you have a custom domain, you'll need to visit the /goodies/ page on your custom domain as well." simply doesn't make it clear to a lot of people what should be done, or how to then leave.

It's not me at this point-- talking about people in this thread & elsewhere. Instead of clarifying & helping here after people get stumped, just have someone fix the sentence I boldened, from the first or second post in this thread to prevent the issue. Give an example of what it looks like to "visit the goodie page" on your custom domain. That's all it would take.

Good Lord. Why make it so difficult. Just take 3 min (shorter than it's taken me to ask all these times!) & add a phrase to the 1st post. Why make excuses? Of course people have used the goodies page w/o issue... after they've waded around here & finally figured out how! And then, like the person who just posted recently, they can't figure out how to get out of the page either. Sometimes, ya know? I just don't get it.... Spare all the extra posts & excuses.. just make it easy. You guys want feedback, & then you really don't... or so it appears.

Seriously. I am a web developer, I know my way around a browser (and html, css, js, java, C#, sql, xml, etc) and the only reason I came to this thread was to figure out why the new style wasn't showing up in my gallery after I made the changes and opted in. It took me to near the end of the (far too many) pages to finally see someone post that I needed to go to extramediumlarge.com/goodies in addition to smugmug.com/goodies to get this to work on extramediumlarge.com

I would think updating the original post would be just as easy as a canned "thanks for your comments" reply. It definitely would have save me some time.
