Apple only has a monopoly on making Apple computers, the same way Maxtor has a monopoly on making Maxtor hard drives, or Pepsi has a monopoly on making pepsi
Given it isn't a true monopoly.. but it is a partially closed system. It would be like Maxtor making their drives in such a way that it required a Maxtor brand (or licensed) controller card. Or better yet: Maxtor making drives that required a Maxtor proprietary file format be used.
Apple requires that you buy and use an Apple brand PC to run their operating system. And up until now they've required that you buy the Apple brand operating system w/ their PCs.
Fortunately it isn't as bad as it used to be. Parts of their system are open these days. They have used commodity memory and HDD components for years.. and now they finally use commodity/consumer processors too.
