This isn't the first time I encounter this. I've deleted a photo which shows shows up with a direct gallery link in google as one of the first results. It took a couple of days and then the picture itself was gone, but the caption is still there. Therefore the direct gallery link still works and won't disappear from google.

How long does the database cleanup take after deleting a photo?

Can't you just redirect deleted photo links back to the gallery start page right after deleting them? This way *I* would be in charge of search results when unwanted things come up at first on result pages.

Here's the photo link I was referring to: rainforest1155.smugmug.com/gallery/119832/1/32500237/Medium

    Thanks,
    Sebastian
Sure seems like a bug of some kind. Moving to the bug thread, and I'll report it. Thanks, Sebastian.

Here's the photo link I was referring to: rainforest1155.smugmug.com/gallery/119832/1/32500237/Medium
    Same happens for keywords too:
    rainforest1155.smugmug.com/keyword/Leipzig/1/32500237/Medium
Further tests show that removing the photo size and leaving the not existing photo id result in a page stating that "This is a brand new gallery with no photos." or "There are no photos for keyword leipzig." when applying it to keywords.
    rainforest1155.smugmug.com/gallery/119832/1/32500237
    rainforest1155.smugmug.com/keyword/Leipzig/1/32500237

Still this is not desireable as both the gallery and the keyword exist and contains photos. Also it is annoying that all those sites still inlclude the deleted image caption and therefore possibly keep those pages ranked higher for these keywords included in the caption.

Best way would be if you could redirect those outdated URLs to the first page of the gallery or keyword.

You should be able to do the same example with any deleted photo ID in combination with any gallery/keyword unless the old caption data gets deleted some times.

    Thanks,
    Sebastian

    Smugmug search and cobranding
I just tried searching for one of my galleries on smugmug, just to see if some random user could find my site with the right keywords. Just go to the smugmug homepage and search for Junior Worlds and it should come up with 4 of my galleries and a bunch of pictures.

If you click on one of the galleries, it goes to my site... except it doesn't. It goes to my gallery on www.smugmug.com, such as http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/1811567

This particular version of my site is missing a few things. First, it's missing my custom URL, www.ultimatefris.be, second, my customization does not carry over to this. My custom header is not there, my elimination of backgrounds and extraneous buttons, the elimination of the size picker (I force large on my site), etc. I would really prefer it if people only view my site as I intend it. Is there some option that I am missing?

This does not happen if you search and then click one of the photo links, although it links to www.layout.smugmug.com instead of www.ultimatefris.be

    Hi Elysium,

It sure shouldn't be that way, IMO. I've logged it as a bug, we'll see what the engineers say. Moved to bug thread.

Sorry about this. If you can shoot us an email the very next time it happens, we'll investigate further. We've no other reports of this presently. Will keep investigating, Daniel, thank you.

It should be fixed - our certificate renewed today, Sept 14th - dunno why the error box popped up for a while, but the certificate has been renewed :) and our site is as safe as it always has been.

    Sorry for the trouble!

Make sure it's on all servers as I got the expiration pop up right as your reply appeared.

Speaking of SSL, can we get this bug fixed?

    Popular photos not being shown
Something odd is happening here http://www.smugmug.com/community/dailyphotos - no popular photos for the day are being shown. The site wide one seems to have a few but here NONE.

    any ideas why?

oh and while I'm at it - another odd bug
if someone chooses to have thier comments approved,
normally there is a message saying "NEEDS APPROVAL"
or something close anyway. This works fine if your adding
a comment at the gallery level but....
when your adding a comment within the daily photos
popular photos level it does not show up when commenting.
leaving the user to think that thier comment didn't take.

    hopefully that makes some sense
let me know if you need me to explain it further.

not sure how long that link will be valid but .. if you try and comment on that photo from that link it will not show that the comment requires approval.

It does show it here though

    Links not using custom domain
From time to time I notice that some of the links in Smugmug don't honor the custom domain defined in the control panel. I'm going to try and report each one as I encounter them here. Here is the first one:

After logging in, the link to go to "your smugmug homepage" uses the account.smugmug.com domain instead of the custom domain.

No, I'm talking about the link after you have logged in.

On your "You've logged in" page:

    1) The automatic refresh goes to the custom domain
    2) "the page you were viewing" link goes to the custom domain
    3) "your smugmug homepage" link goes to the .smugmug.com domain

The actual login process is indeed going through www.smugmug.com and there is no problem logging in. The issue is that the "you've logged in" page hasn't been updated to recognize custom hostnames.

We don't support logging in and out from your custom domain.

    from http://www.smugmug.com/help/acctlogin:
Gotcha: Pro account subscribers who use their own custom hostnames must login and logout using www.smugmug.com or yournickname.smugmug.com.

Exactly. I never said I'm trying to log in or out via my custom domain. I'm logging in via www.smugmug.com and there is absolutely no problem with that. This isn't an issue about logging in or out.

There is no technical reason for link #3 to go to the .smugmug.com URL. #1 and #2 prove that.

What he's referring to is, after you're logged in (for me, specifically RIGHT after I login, since that and the customization pages are the only ones I have displaying the Smugmug header) if I click on "Your Photos" it sends me to http://stevem01.smugmug.com instead of http://www.downriverphotography.com

Personally this doesn't bother me too much, since as far as I know, I'm the only one that can cause this "redirection". However, I have to say that through Smugmug searches, probably category browsing, etc., all those hits/links refer to my Smugmug URL, not my domain name.

Andy, I think I've been abandoned (maybe just paranoia). I was talking to two smugmug people this week about my problem and they seem to have "walked away" rolleyes1.gif

Here's the issue: While in my galleries I Cannot edit the gallery titles or descriptions and Cannot use any "gallery tools" or "Buy this photo". I Can use "photo tools" and "Buy multiple photos". It's very strange. It started almost a week ago -- right out of the blue.

If I click (or double-click) on any of these functions, there is absolutely no reaction, except I can see the javascript commands along the bottom (where you're probably seeing the word "Done" right now in the browser bar).

I reloaded Java and it had been missing the ActiveX program, it said, so I thought that would definitely cure the problem when it was reloaded (since I'm no techno-geek and therefore believe and have faith that if anything is downloaded fully, it will solve any other software problems...go figure), but no, there is no change... Have you heard that anyone else has this problem? I haven't read all the threads as I just haven't had time.

I would appreciate any help you could give me. My address is catscribe@rogers.com. Thanks - Kate

The only recent email from you and to you from us, I find, is about an order, on Sept 17th

    Missing Black Mug Pricing
Hi - I'm new to Smugmug and new to forums. I read the forum instructions beforehand, and believe it said to enter my comment by using "reply" in an existing thread - don't start a new thread. So here goes - I feel like I'm cutting in on someone else's topic, and apologize if that's the case. The note on this forum said for bug reporting. I encountered a minor one in pricing - not a big deal, but for your information... I set up some photo gift pricing along with print prices. Although the 11 ounce black mug is priced, it does not appear in the drop down pricing list. Like I said - no big deal. If you need to check it out, it's chuckschug.smugmug. If I've posted my trivial little issue incorrectly, please correct me so I know what to do in the future. Thanks. (PS - thanks to Andy, Mike Lane and others who contributed all the valuable instructions and tips - my site is very basic at the moment, but I was able to get everything done very easily by following the old threads and posts from all of you - much appreciated.)

Hi, it's a database quirk on our side, we don't sell the black mugs because the quality wasn't there. We'll try to get it out of the pro pricing tool, too. Sorry :D

I never use the .smugmug.com domain and since I have a custom domain on my site, any references to primarycolors.smugmug.com should always be replaced with the custom domain, unless technically necessary. So far I haven't run into a technical reason.

I'm late to the game with smugmug and I don't know the complete history, but it appears that custom domains were a later enhancement that has never been completely applied.

Here is the expectation: A end user/customer should never see the primarycolors.smugmug.com name when a pro custom domain has been set up. However I see the .smugmug.com name used in several locations (while logged out):

    1) Links to friends and family

    2) Search results - here the results are different. Gallery matches actually use www.smugmug.com as the link. Individual picture matches use the primarycolors.smugmug.com.

    3) the "photo by" and "see photo in gallery" links

All of these should use the custom domain when one is set up.

For a search example, go to www.smugmug.com and enter "wavecrest" in the search box. Note the first matching gallery uses www.smugmug.com and the individual photos use primarycolors.smugmug.com

And for an example of the photo by/see gallery links use http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/all/wavecrest

P.S. has anyone noticed the search has been VERY SLOW lately?
