My only possible grudge with this one is that I've never been to Boston, so there is no way in hell I could possibly figure out what this is..mwink.gif

Your first guess may very well be right - I don't know what it was my friend was drinking. :D

Assuming it's for the last image, you're close with the second guess: It does have to do with sound. How about the others? Any more guesses?

#3 looks like drapes or something with a tieback
#4 is the siren on an old firetruck
#5 an old microphone is the best I can come up with

#2 - Yes, it's the sweatband in a well cared for vintage felt fedora.
#3 - Close, but no cigar.
#4 - You got it! The old "Growler" type.
#5 - A little closer than Nikolai, but not quite. Think a little further down the line.

It is portable, but not in that particular manner. Also, think a little closer to the source of the sound, but not the actual recording (past or present tense) of it. It is a speaker, in a manner, but it requires a sort of amplifier. "Old" and "classic" still apply.

I may end up with 78 guesses to this one! :D

Close enough! clap.gif It's the resonator for an RCA Victrola.

What happens is, the needle is mounted to the resonator, which sends the sound through the tone arm to the sound box. Believe it or don't, there are only two ways to control volume: changing the needle from hard to soft or shoving a sock in the sound box. (Ever wondered where the phrase, "Shove a sock in it" to silence a loud talker came from?) Until you've experienced one, you really don't know how loud these things are.

I found it in an antique store in Barstow about a week ago. Here's a picture of it.
