This antique isn't common enough to be an everyday item, even though they have been used in many forms for centuries and newer versions are still in use today, but everybody has heard of them. Most current models are made of orange plastic.

If you'd like to keep guessing, here's another image.

This is fun. Is it an antique flare gun?

    Door hinge ne_nau.gif

Edit: My guess was based on the first photo. The second clearly shows its not a hinge! Nice challenge.

    Drin got it exactly! wings.gif

Mr. Ricklin. Except for the "small" part, you were closer than you know with your first guess. :cry

    GuessworksolutionDSC_3984.jpg

It's a WWI Van Karner VK-M12 flare pistol, and it's HUGE! It's full length is 13-3/4 inches, and the beast weighs about five pounds. Bore is 37mm, so trying to load a 12 gauge shell into it would be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway. From what I've read, adapters for loading 12 gauge shells were available at one time. Don't ask me what they look like or how they work, though, because I have no clue.

    Good guessing, Drin! thumb.gif

Close, but it's not a doormat, although it serves a similar purpose
    (that should give it away)

Hemlock/pines needles in a boot/shoe cleaner, the kind you run you feet back and forth thru to get the dirt off your shoes?

    Too easy?
I explored three of the assignments before making several outings with camera in hand. This seemed to have some more recent posts than #1 (which I also did), so I am contributing something here as well.

Note: I have only read the early and later posts in this thread, so hope I am not duplicating an earlier image here. And boy, was the needles in the boot/shoe cleaner a hard one to guess!
