Has anyone checked out JungleDisk? Use Amazon S3 to back up your mac (be just like smugmug). Looks like a pretty afordable plan if you want an online way to back up a lot of stuff.

It's teh seks. S3 for storage is crazy cheap. S3 for bandwidth isn't, though it's reasonable enough. What i'm typically using these days is my dreamhost account (that's a referral link btw) and macFUSE and sshfs (which is linked on the macFUSE site). That lets me mount (tee hee) my dreamhost account securely right there on my mac as if it were just an external drive or something. Super sweet.

I am definately going to have to check out dreamhost. They really give you a ton of space for crazy cheap, I had to take a double take when I saw they were talking about GB of space instead of MB of space. So are you using dreamhost for both back ups and to host www.mikelanestudios.com?

Another mac question: Is there any mac equivalent to Nikolai's star explorer for bulk downloading images from smugmug. I'm fine with the mac tools for uploading images, but I want to be able to be able to bulk download images from my smugmug site.

I'm hosting lots of things on dreamhost mwink.gif I've got backups galore there too. I've got bank stuff on s3 because it seems lots more secure (and because I found jungle disk before I thought of using my dh account).

I just don't see online backup as a solution for 500GB of photos.

fair enough. If it was automated somehow I think it would be reasonable. I don't have 500 gigs of craptacular photos let alone good ones so I really can't weigh in much.

Yep, set it and forget it...it's just bandwidth. It could go while you sleep. You know, Sid, with all that time that you used to run your virus software while you slept. :D

Or your backups are done in a dribble bits sort of way. 500G over the
course of hours, delta compression and only as there is bandwidth available.

would each Adobe program have an updater or just PS? I thought I had it off and it seems to come back to haunt me, maybe it has something to do with the CS3 beta. ne_nau.gif

Seems to me that there's jus the one app to rule them all. Did you use the clean script to get rid of the beta before installing the full version? I'm not sure there was an updater in the beta?

Still have the beta, have not purchased the upgrade yet.

I did go and reset the updaters prefs, hopefully that will stop it.

So, with all the rumors going around (and Jobs' green announcement) talking about LED MacBook Pro displays, my question is: how important will that be to us? Will LED backlit displays be a huge leap forward for us in color accuracy? Should I be saving my money for an upgrade? ear.gif

LEDs are expected to be a definite improvement in several ways. No experienced photographer needs to be told how spiky and difficult the spectrum of a fluorescent lightbulb is, yet that is exactly what sits behind our LCDs.

But check what happens to your color gamut and accuracy when you dump the current bulb and put an array of LEDs behind the LCD.

Caveat - from what I am reading, the new Apple laptop displays are not likely to be a thick RGB array like the NEC desktop monitor reviewed above, but white LEDs so they can be thin. I am not sure how much that will compromise the color gamut and accuracy, but I hope white LEDs are still going to be noticeably better than fluorescent even if not as good as an adjustable RGB LED array.

Apple is not the first to do this. Sony already has some laptops with these displays. I'm still on a PowerBook, so I'm glad I waited to replace it. I'm starting to drool in anticipation of a MacBook Pro with a lower-power (better battery life), longer-lasting, more environmentally friendly (no mercury) LED backlit display with better color. It sounds like a win-win-win-win situation.

As with anything from them... newer will be better and there's always something newer just around the corner that will cost more than today's version. :D

About the time you buy an apple product is about the time they announce the next new great thing. I've almost given up on holding out to get the next great thing from them these days... 'cause gaurenteed as soon as I buy version N, version N+1 will be announced.

    Contextual Menu problem/oddity.

When I right click on an icon and select "open with" I will sometimes see multiple options listed for the same program, right now I see Acrobat 8 listed 4 times.

Does anyone know what causes this and/or have a solution?

I purchased the CS3 upgrade yesterday and the install went well.

What is the best way to uninstall PS CS2?

Not sure I'm understanding this correctly.

    Does CS3 turn-off a firewall when it's installed?

    Here's what I read:

    Adobe

    Tony Aguila
Regarding the firewall being turned off after installing CS3, it happened here too. I did the Design Standard upgrade from CS2 and I was certain about the firewall being on previously.

After the install, it was turned off and a new rule was added, Adobe Version Cue CS3 Server, allowing TCP access to ports 3703, 3704, 50900 and 50901. If the Adobe people are going to do this, they should at least have enough courtesy to turn the firewall back on afterwards.

    William Lueders
I just checked my Firewall and as suggested by Robert MacLeay it was off also. I had it on prior to loading CS3. I turned it back on and am now checking to see what else might have been messed with. Strange!

    MacInTouch Reader
I also discovered my firewall had been turned off after upgrading from CS1 to CS3. Could this have something to do with how Version Cue works?
