Did we get an estimate on a start time? You're really thinking sunrise? eek7.gif

HAHA, if Ann wants to sure! Hey I did sunrise at Point Lookout last month...brrr. I got the inside scoop on early am free parking at the Tidal Basin. Park in lot A, it says it doesn't open until 8am, but the interior signs say 5am with a limit on parking to 3 hours. They patrol the lot and "mark" the cars (chalk on tires) to check for the three hours, but it's free as long as you don't stay over.

I used to have access to the Colonial garages...hmmm I need to see if I still have that. Otherwise, I can drive in for sunrise and drive back out and then metro back in...pain in the butt? Maybe a little...but it's all good! I've also got bicycles...we can bike. rolleyes1.gif '

I'm going to PM you my cell number, I think we're going to try some night shots Friday night we can see how the trees look too, it may not be worth getting to DC at 5am on Saturday.

    Hey Christina,
Just a heads-up regarding Haines Point. I drove there for sunrise last Wednesday and every spot was taken except for the tennis court area where there were two spots left. That was at 6:30am on a weekday! My only advice is to get there early to make sure you snag those spots. I'm not sure what the tennis area rules are for the weekend but I had to make sure to move by 8:30 when I parked there.
Look forward to meeting you on Saturday.

I am looking forward to meeting you and all the others as well. I hope to remember my red smugmug cap, so I'll be identifiable (as something more than the middle aged, plump woman that I am).
HAHA, if Ann wants to sure!

Christina, my goal is to go with the flow and not cause anyone any trouble - I'll shoot sunrise and night shots, both, neither and anything in between. And I'll listen to davev's tales and not blink an eye! Maybe he'll teach me how to shoot jpg!!!

I already know that they're all handheld and JPEG.thumb.gif But, yes for sure we have to get together! Hey, there is a bald eagle at the tidal basin. You better bring the 600mm just in case. jbswear and I saw him last year, but I was so busy saying "hey, look!! EAGLE" that I just got two crappy shots of him. rolleyes1.gif

I've put your number in my phone and sent you mine.

It looks like metro rail doesn't open until 7am on weekends. So I can drive in for sunrise and then drive back out to a metro stop for parking. It stays open until 3am Friday and Saturday night, but individual trains/stations don't run that late, so you have to check particular stations. If you're at the Vienna/Fairfax stop, the west end of the Orange line you have the same hours - 7am until approx. 3am.

Yep, the Dunn/Loring is our stop.

No big lenses for me on this trip. I'm looking to travel light.
I'm thinking the Tokina 12-24, the Canon 28-105, (I get this lens tomorrow, I've read great things about it, I hope that they're true) and I think that's going to be it. This is not the 24-105L lens but a $230 light weight travel equivalent.

If the new 28-105 doesn't work out, I'll probably bring the Tokina and my Canon 28-300. That big white lens sure would be nice to have, but I don't see me taking many pics at 150-300mm.

    What do you think?

I have Christina's, Ann's, and Winston's number programed into the cell phone.

I intend to go with the flow also. Kate and I were in DC about 25 years ago.
It doesn't look like it's changed all that much, well, maybe the armed guards, metal detectors, and snipers on the rooftops.
Ann, if you listen to me it will be the first time in 25 years that a woman has.:D

Now, I hope you're all sitting down for this, I have shot in RAW mode a couple of times now. I didn't like doing it, but I can see some benefits doing it.
But JPG's are still my preferred method of shooting.

Now, are you still sitting, I may even bring a tripod.:D
I'm still up in the air about the tripod though.:D

I really want to wear my cammo clothing, but I don't want to waste the time for all the cavity searches.eek7.gif

Well, so much for traveling light! The minute I decided to bring my tripod, the decision about which suitcase to bring was made. It happens to be large enough (since it needs to be long enough for the tripod) for me to pack business clothes that require different color shoes...hence I am bringing 4 pair of shoes for 5 days!
I've made decisions about gear too. Probably tougher to minimize this than the clothes...rolleyes1.gif Anyway, both bodies, the 24 - 105 (davev - you can get a good look at one for comparison if you like), 70 - 200 and the 50 f1.4. Plus tripod, chargers, P2000 and my grad nd just in case. And a small laptop from work. All in the computrekker, but I threw the 5M dollar home into my case - I can put the 20d, the 24 - 105 and the 70 - 200 in it for the day in the city.

    Am I nuts?eek7.gif

    See y'all soooon!

    Hey Dave,
The only things you would need more reach for are the zoo and the view from the Netherton Carrilions/Iwo Jima where you can shoot the Lincoln/Washington and Capitol in one tightly framed shot.

Oh and regarding tripods, you technically aren't allowed to use them on the grounds of any monument. You can usually sneak to the side of the Jefferson and use it there. Otherwise those armed guards will be sure to tell you that they aren't allowed.
Also, many people have been using them at sunrise around the tidal basin. Not sure if they are allowed when the crowds get bigger later in the day.

Thanks E that's great advice! I get harassed enough just for using a DSLR. No need to throw them a bone with my tripod, too.

We might do sunrise Saturday morning. I'll update for sure on here Friday night. We had a gorgeous sunset here in SoMD tonight, but I want to see the AM forecast for Saturday before I make any decisions.

Meteorologist is the only job you can have, be wrong 90% of the time and still keep it… (the job, that is) I don’t think sunrise will be that great because of possible cloud cover (could be wrong though) I suggest we meet at the Castle courtyard around 0730 for coffee… If it rains, they are predicting showers in the morning only...

Metrorail opens at 7, so assuming the first train leaves pretty soon after that we should be able to make it around 730. thumb.gif

I'll have to bow out, friends. With the weather reports calling for rain and possible storms, I don't want to try dragging my young daughter around in it.

If it miraculously clears, though, I'll head down!

Ann has arrived in MD and we visited the Annapolis city docks and saw lots of people, kids, dogs, and midshipmen. If tomorrow's weather is anything like tonights it'll be a nice day in DC. Weather reports show chance of rain and thundershowers but I think the weather channel is saying about 30% with pretty clear sky in around 7-9 and then again in the afternoon.

So, unless I hear differently we'll be at the Castle at approx. 7:30am. If anything changes please text or call me. We'll be leaving around 6am and won't see posts on the board.

Christina and I are trying to make gear decisions.....Tripods, but they will stay in the trunk. My decision is 'do I haul everything I have been hauling these last few days just for tomorrow or do I wimp out and just bring the small camera bag, one body and two lenses? Nah, I think I'll bring the backpack. I'm just worried about running in to things.
I think we will visit museums if the weather is terrible. And drink beer with the Minnesotans. Anyone know if they got out of the winter wonderland?

Ann..be careful with the full backpack in th museums. I suspect they will be busy tomorrow. Most museums have lockers of 2-3 sizes, and the bigger one fill fast.

Also, make sure you are not carrying anything "lethal" in the bags. They will be visually inspected (not in any great detail though) before you go into the museums. A few sites will x-ray the bag.

    want to see your pics!
Well, I live in northern VA, about 20 minutes south of DC and I've been 'lurking' in this thread and decided to post. I really wanted to go and meet up with everyone today but I'm not a pro (not even close) and was a little intimidated by you all!

Anyway, I wouldn't have been able to go even if I got the nerve to go since I have 4 kids and my hubby was working. I hope the rain didn't spoil your outing. I'm sure you all are still out and about, but as soon as you get your pictures on your computer, I would love to see them. Maybe I will be brave and join you next year, if we make this an annual dgrin event!

Since I wasn't able to make it today, I decided to take some pictures of the cherry blossoms in my neighborhood...I know it's probably nothing like the pictures you all took, but I figured I'd post them here anyways. Can't wait to hear and see about your outing!
