Page 12 in Time Magazine. That is what it looks like to me. This is great photojournalism. This would be perfect on a cover of a newspaper, story in a magazine, etc. Great real capture of an emotional story. Easy to relate to. Well done!
Your description is precisely the look I was going for. I am a huge fan of 1960's style BW photography, and had this vision all along. My XTI supposedly shoots 3.5 frames per second. Maybe a tad slower considering I was shooting RAW. This was the first of three frames captured, and held the most hats. I toyed with the idea of adding hats, but decided that in the spirit of the photojournalistic style I was trying to accomplish that I would not alter or "add-in" any elements. This is all there was in that 1/160th of a second. I did spend a lot of time on the conversion and making it the best that I can offer to the photograph. I think it deserved that time spent.
I also frequent that site...recognized your name and work.
You're only as good as your next photo....
One day, I started writing, not knowing that I had chained myself for life to a noble but merciless master. When God hands you a gift, he also hands you a whip; and the whip is intended solely for self-flagellation...I'm here alone in my dark madness, all by myself with my deck of cards --- and, of course, the whip God gave me." Truman Capote
Shatch, could you do me a big favor and elaborate on the technique...I tried to do "rear" sync but the lighting was horrible
Getting bogged down with a project tonight, so I took a break for some therapy (a photo).
Shoot manual mode. Set to expose sky 2-3 stops under. You need a dark background to maximize motion effect. If you expose for a light balanced shot, you don't see the motion as much. I stayed close to the house so I could use the lights of the home to illuminate my motion. I set the camera for 10sec time delay (self portrait), went to the other side of the lawn and listened. When the camera shutter opened, I ran with an exaggerated motion while I counted to three. As I neared what I thought was three seconds, I jumped. With the flash set on "Rear Curtain Sync", the shutter was open for three seconds and as it was ready to close, then the flash went off, illuminating me in the air. It only took 28 shots to get this frame (ha...only!) What a workout. I'm sweating, and my legs hurt. Think I jarred my back as well. Should have used running shoes instead of the dress loafers. Guess I'll sleep well tonight.
SECOND VARIATION (easier)
If your flash doesn't have a "rear curtain sync", you can shoot in manual mode, setting exposure to be one to two stops darker for the background. Shoot your subject on the right 1/3 of the frame and move your camera to the right while you take the photo. This will create a motion blur effect with a flash frozen subject in the right part of the frame.
Hope this makes sense. Good luck. Would love to see what you come up with.

My apologies for not replying earlier. I have been alternating between being very busy and very sick. Not fun at all. I have barely been online and have not liked it at all.
For those that wondered what the building is in the photo, it is the LDS (Mormon) Temple in Independence Missouri. I am not Mormon but I was driving around looking for inspiration for the Moving Forward theme. Sometime in the middle of the day I was wondering around aimlessly (only slightly lost), and ended up turning a corner and seeing that spire stretching into the sky. I walked all around looking for an angle that would show a religious/spiritual moving forward theme. I was thinking of the spire stretching into the sky (heavens) and while I was framing it the plane just went through and I hit the button when I thought it was in a good spot.
53- TPBinKC - Looking Up
What an amazing building! I like the photo. Good play between the building spire and the space of the airplane. I like the richness of the photo. Well executed.
54. TPBinKC; this is my favorite photo. Great job beautiful photograph! I would hang it on my wall!!! (it’s not the most creative as far as the theme goes though)
Wow…awesome shot. Really love the whole thing. I'm seeing a lot of artifacts in the sky, which is a shame. Not super strong on theme, but it works.
Thank you for your comments and for judging. I am below novice when it comes to Photoshop (I only have Elements) and probably did not process it as well as I could have.
Denise B. and pyroPrints.com, thank you both and anyone I may have missed for your positive comments as well. I am not used to having people outside of my family and friends say nice things about my shots very often. So I REALLY appreciate it the nice words everyone.
Those Ain't No Baby Steps!
Definitely moving forward and would have been the winner in this challenge in my book. Certainly original and not something that can be seen every day! Great job Shatch............
11 pemmett - For the cause: Nice processing to give this a post-apocalyptical feel. Gun is cut off and the expressions don’t quite seem to convey either pride at being survivors or a sense of ‘don’t mess with us’ that I would expect from this scene.
Thanks for the comments. This was taken with a phone camera (shock horror) and processed in Lightroom :-)
Feedback on remaining entries #11 – pemmett – For the cause Very highly styled image, great pp choices. The message here does not meet the theme for me unfortunately, but I love the image regardless.
Emily, thanks for the kind comments. I know it doesn't fit the theme directly but it was the closest I could get with the limited time I had and I REALLY wanted to get an image in the first round :-)
11. pemmet; A neat photo but I really don’t get it. Could you please explain what the cause is…and how is this moving forward? Thanks
I was trying to go for the abstract of using guns to move a cause forward. This was actually a shot during a movie shoot I was working on for a Movie called "Road Raiders" being shot here in the Philippines
10- pemmet - For the cause
This reminds me of a movie poster. I like the dark PP and theme. Looks like a fun afternoon of target practice. I want more story though. Give me enough to lead me to the answer of, "Why?" Fun photo and it appears to be something new for you. I like it.
Shatch, this is why you make such a great friend :-) Thanks for the kind words. The new thing was that I used a camera phone! We were shooting a movie and I didn't want to bring my Canon with me :-)
By the way great shot and love the fact your shot was shot in camera.
Thank you everyone for the kind acknowledgment on the motion shot. Where it was a study in dragging the shudder with a rear curtain sync flash, I thought it may be beneficial to some of you to learn from my mistakes. Here is a link to all of the photos. Notice the background color and exif data. It seems best when the background is darker. Also, the toughest part seemed to be balancing out the TTL flash, even set at -3. I should have tried some in flash manual mode.

Hey Shatch:
Thanks for taking the time, it is very much appreciated.
Yup I have the Rear Sync (photo below), the problem is I don't have time to wait 2-3 seconds cuz the game is a very very fast moving game.
I usually only go to these events with one camera and I don't have time during the event to be changing settings and/or experimenting, I try during warmup to get some test shots (different lighting situations) and see what looks best and which is what I probably use for the rest of the game.
The girls didn't want too much "ghosting" they preferred the full clear shots for promo reasons..they needed to show the fans the intensity of the game...Go Figiure..
Check out my Derby Girls shots when and if you get a moment..
Again, Thanks for your time....I'm gonna give your instructions a whirl..at something else.....Got a Costume Shoot coming up soon...I think would make for some interesting exposures..
Peace and Warm Regards
Donna

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that took the time to comment here. I unfortunately got swamped with work and then was out of town so I didn't have much time for my entry and then was away from the computer during the critique week. I'll try to be more with it on round two!
If you read along in the contest's critique threads you would have read where I alluded to the fact that this photograph might mean something to my community. Several years ago, our community began the long road of becoming an incorperated city. One of the goals after we became the City of Central, was to gain our freedom from the faltering East Baton Rouge Parish school board. Tired of seeing new schools built across the parish while our own schools were being neglected we began our journey. It was a tough road that had many court sessions and public votes along the way, but we did...in the end... gain independence from the parish school system and form our own. This past school year was the very first for the Central Community School System, and "Released" depicts the inaugural graduating class of 2008. My intentions are for this to hang in the scool board's offices, and I have already been in contact with some of the members to discuss this. I hope that they can see that everything in the photograh...from the hats in the air to all the exhuberant faces...is exactly what they have fought for.

Fantastic Jeff. The photo gets even better as the story unfolds more. Congrats again on a great photo. I believe the school board will really appreciate your contribution.

Well shatch that's it, no more to unfold. Now..hopefully placing 3rd in the voting will curb my daugher's insistance that I should have positioned myself so that she was in he photo. The guy up front...throwing his hat from the seated position is the valadictorian...standing with her arm in motion is the salutatorian.
My only critique of this photo: Shay would have been pissed that you caved and put "moving forward" right in your title. Boooo! Hissss! But since you're new here, we'll cut you some slack. Excellent crop really made this photo. It's clear you have a keen eye for taking was what essentially a far off snapshot, and focus down into a very cool view. Nice work.

Well, how the heck was I supposed to know that I needed to be creative for the title? But if that's the only gripe ya got, I can live with it.
Thank you, very much for the positive comments... it really helps my ego. I was still hitting *refresh* at 1am thinking there was something wrong with the poll results....

Great SP, I think. I hope there is a less strenuous side to your personality, to balance things out?
Best regards to you!
