OK people of the People Forum... let's see some of your people shots that have really shallow DOF. I'm talking those shots where you opened up that lens as w-i-d-e as it would go. If you don't have one, go shoot one and post it! Please post lens used and aperture setting.

Canon 50mm 1.8 (Plastic Fantastic) Just a test shot of the wife to test DOF when I first got it. Looks like a little weird artifacting happening on her hair.

Thanks very much, Doog. I have more shots of here here, although none of them are wide open. I should look through the shoot again and find more that are.

A question I am embarrassed to ask because I feel I should know the answer... when the lens is wide open how is it these photographers are able to get so much in focus and not just one eye?

Much of it has to do with the distance that you are from your subject. For example, with my D-700 and a 105mm lens, if I am ten feet from my subject i have about 5.5 inches that are within the limit of acceptable sharpness. If however I am only 5 feet from the subject i have 1.3 inches of acceptable sharpness.

Here is a nifty little DOF calculator:

get both eyes parallel to the camera..if the subject head is at an angle to the cmaera then I would avoid shooting at 1.4 unless they were standing farther away. Also if it is a 2.8 lens you have more latitude of course.

As the distance from the subject increases, the depth of field also increases. At f/1.4 and a subject distance of ~3.5ft, the depth of field is razor thin...I love that look but no margin of error. I suspect several of these images were cropped giving the appearance that they were shot closer than they really were (or stopped down).

The other guys got your answered covered but I just wanted to add that you should never feel embarrassed to ask a question. Well, maybe if you want to know what color my undies are, then maybe a little but still, ask away. deal.gif

What color are your undies anyway? You should have just told us instead of keeping us all in suspense. :D

Great shots everybody! Love it. I'm doing a shoot with a model on wednesday, so I'll grab a shot or two (hundred) then and see if I can't get one with the shallow DOF for here as well.

Lol, no doubt Nik. No need to ask the underwear color question. Lol, that little 50 I used, can be unforgiving, have to make sure both eyes are parallel for sure. I just snagged it to see if I could do a prime. Wife was 4 feet away, object on right about 6 feet, and the rest 12-15 feet back. Lol, no crop there, I think I was leaning back on that one even. But yes, some DOF's look deep to me also, I noticed it last night. But hey nice shots all! thumb.gif
