You're invited: Dgrin's 5-Year Birthday

Can you believe it? Digital Grin was birthed on December 11, 2003. Five whole years of great shots, generous people, helpful advice, shootout adventures, and everything in between.

To celebrate we're throwing a party so we can all have one great chance to get together, mingle, shmooze, talk shop, and maybe even do a little shooting on the side. And unlike Moab we're kicking attendance limits to the curb! This is the best darned photo community on the web and we owe it all to you. Come one, come all, and just get together to eat, drink, be merry, and get to know those text-based friends in real life. :D

You can RSVP using the form below, NOT in a reply, please! We need to get a rough head count so we can figure out the best venue to hold this shindig. If possible we'd like to have your response by October 1. So put your hands together, click those buttons and let's show 'em that our Digitally Grinny awesomeness can't be contained on the internet alone. :ivar

UPDATE with some potentially useful information for those dedicated Dgrinners flying in for this event:
  • Hotels
    • Smuggers know that the nearby Hotel Zico is a great, reasonable hotel very closely located to pretty much everything
  • Ground Transportation
  • Airports
    • San Francisco, SFO
    • San Jose, SJC
    • Oakland, OAK

How is the weather in that area in DEC? Is Alcatraz open for tours that time of year? Just trying to figure out what to do the rest of the weekend.ne_nau.gif

Since you're from Vegas, weather is going to be on the cool side and it might be rainy. It just depends on what you're used to...

    average for Mountain View
    average for San Francisco

And yes, Alcatraz is open, but they don't have night tours. For the rest of the weekend -- eat, sight see, hike, museums, etc.

There is tons to do in the bay area (indoors and outside).

Woo hoo, I sent in a maybe but I really, really want to come. And, as it turns out a friend of mine (and fellow smugmug user) lived in Mountain View for 12 years and is willing to come out there with me. So, I may change my "maybe" to a "yes" and with another person. clap.gif

April, I know it's early yet, but would you possibly be up for going shooting?

    Possibility???!??!? headscratch.gif

    clap.gifclapclap.gifMost definitely! clap.gifclapclap.gif

Depending on the weather, temps, (and party details), make some plans for some sort of an easy going, loose, mini-shootout.

This generally happens when a bunch of photographers get together in one place. rolleyes1.gif And it will probably be very loose -- who ever wants to come can come, and others can explore on their own.

So... since you asked -- anything you want to see/do?

The bay area has plenty of stuff indoors and outdoors.

And knowing me, I'll probably bake too. sooooo... requests? Healthy no-sugar vegan stuff to the full fat, full sugar variety and everything in between. Give it to me. :D

I think the multi-phase shielding is interfering with the dilithium crystal alignment, thus placing the "submit" button out of a dimensional retinal recognized wave length.

I'm not Sam but I ordinarlly have my text size in Firefox set two increases up. The whole form does not show for me that way. But, decrease 4 times and then it will all show.

    Hope this helps

We did discuss that when we were throwing ideas around, but since Smuggy is chipping in it just made sense to keep it closer to "home." ne_nau.gif

Hmm so it doesn't all fit in the page or it just doesn't work at all? The form as generated does stretch to the width of the window (whether I like that or not...)

    Thanks for the input, Jane!

I am older and wear bi-folcals. In order to sit back and read without cocking my head to look through the right portion of them I ordinarily increase the text size from the default and don't wear my glasses. That makes the bottom of the form NOT show up. Decreasing the text size several steps DOES bring up the rest of the form.

Hope this makes what I was trying to tell you clearer.

Whew! The previous post scared me for a minute. My friend and I are getting ready to book flights to San Jose. One shootout and two mini shootouts in one year = sweet! clap.gif

Also, with the costs of flights it's not really any cheaper to hit the central US either. Some cities/airlines offer reduced fare during certain seasons, but none of them are that cheap anymore. :cry

What I think Allen was trying to bring up is that it seems like everything (except the one in Scotland) has been in the far west and only the people in places like California have been close enough to DRIVE and NOT have to fly at all.

We've had several things on the east coast. Andy's NYC workshop, the Shenandoah workshop, to name the two that come to mind.

EDIT: Wow, April! bowdown.gif You've got it nailed!

Wellllll I happen to be thinking of the middle of the country as I am reasonably close (about an hour + or - depending on where in metro area you are going) to St. Louis. No real argument; just a different mindset based on location.
