Hi folks, we have made progress. We have a fix in testing. I cannot give you a time estimate but look for a post on our release notes when that is updated. You can view the release notes here: http://news.smugmug.com/ I would recommend signing up for the RSS feed. Or by leaving a comment, you have the option to be notified by email when a new post is added.

We did not have a release last night but we do hope to ship this fix with the next 7 days - more as we get precise timing on our next release.
I spent a little time checking my older galleries. I'm finding problems all over. This is beyond belief that something as simple as the order of pictures can be all messed up.
I have almost 3000 pictures and spent much time to get them in a nice order for viewing. This is very depressing.
I also noticed that the arrange/sort tool uses ascending/descending in the opposite direction as the gallery settings direction.
also having problem
I just thought I'd add that I'm having the same problem too, with a sharegroup. Actually, it happened in a gallery last week but my more pressing issue is a sharegroup with around 55 galleries in it. It's so frustrating. I go to "arrange" and I see it say "saving" and then I view it while logged in and while logged out in another browser, and the order gets all screwed up. I will be paying attention to this thread carefully as I desperately need help here!
To clarify my previous post, I see the order gets all messed up when I try to make a single change to my sharegroup. For instance, I got everything in the right order (3 times now) and then decided I wanted to remove one gallery from this sharegroup. Poof! There goes all my manual ordering. I edit things a lot, so I don't want to feel like I can't make any changes to my sharegroups gallery after I get everything in order. Especially because I plan to regularly add galleries to this sharegroup. Really hope you can find a solution soon!
Can you elaborate a little on how this happened? Which view were you on when you saw the photos changing order? was it just one photo moving to the next positon? or moving a few positions over?
I just noticed that the photos I moved next to each other 2 days ago are now appart again as you described in an earlier post. This is very strange (unless you moved them appart). The only scenario I can see this happening is for the photos being arranged on 2 different computers (or even on the same computer but on different browser windows or tabs) at the same time. Could this be the case?
Thanks for your feedback. It's really helpful.
Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. I've been trying to narrow down the problem. I've tested by rearranging at both home (a Mac, using Safari browser) and work (a PC, using Firefox browser), and the problem persists either way - so I don't think it's an Internet connection issue or a hardware issue. On Thursday night, at home on my Mac, I rearranged our Rwanda album (http://janik.smugmug.com/Travel-Diving/Rwanda-February-2011/16092652_7ug6c#1204137142_XKGx9) to the order shown in a pdf I've uploaded here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15864558/Photo%20Sharing.%20Your%20Photos%20Look%20Better%20Here.%20_%20SmugMug.pdf. This order "stuck" while I continued to upload and edit photos, but when I hit the refresh page button, it was back to chaos. So, the next day, on my PC at work, I rearranged to match the same order as show in the pdf. I hit the refresh button, and the order remained as I'd arranged it. I waited a few hours, and it was still good. Problem solved?? No! I checked the album today and it is rearranged. It doesn't seem to be just reverting to the order I originally uploaded in, either - it seems more like some of the rearranged photos are "sticking" and others aren't.
Yes, when using Drag to Arrange I do see the "Saving Positions" message.
As to your question as to what I was doing when I saw the photos rearrange themselves, I was in the standard Smugmug view, and the rearrangement happened as I clicked from one page of the album to the next. And the photos did not just shift by one or two spots, they seemed to completely reshuffle. Again, this was in the Rwanda album and all of a sudden gorilla photos were mixed in with the dancing people photos.
I did not move the two test photos in the Uganda album apart, but I have uploaded and deleted a few photos in that album, so that may have affected them. Sorry, but I was really hoping to get both of these albums ready for sharing and public viewing in the near future. If there's something specific I should do or not do to help you test, please let me know.

P.S. Sorry, I see that my husband deleted one of the test photos. He & I are working on the Uganda album today (from same computer, just trading off) - but if you need me to leave it alone for awhile let me know.
This is a little off topic, but the "OOps! That gallery doesn't seem to exist" message is still showing up every time I upload a new photo or group of photos to an already existing gallery. It's been going on for at least two weeks now.
Gallery photos randomly re-arranging
I've just tried the Make a Copy function to copy a photo. I marked the copy of the original photo as hidden, and then went to move the copy to another gallery through the Move to Other Gallery option, and was surprised to find out that half of the images in the existing gallery had decided to rearrange themselves out of sequence immediately afterwards. Is this likely to be a one-off?

Update.
As was suggested I moved the first image to the last photo spot until it "saved" and then I moved the last photo back to the first place until it saved--then I rearranged all of my photos once again and it stay saved for a few days. Now my shots are all out of order in that same gallery --this really bites.
I also did the same thing for another gallery and the shots do not remain saved in their rearranged positons.
I have been experiencing the same problem and am quite unhappy about it. Even the results of using the old arrange tool are not completely correct immediately after saving. Something is broken.
Yup, and you can see in this very thread that our Sorcerer has been working on it, and that we've got a fix. I hope it goes out into the wild later today, we're trying.
I too am having this issue, and it's frustrating because when I link my clients to their album which I've arranged the way I want it, they log in and see a jumbled mixture of photos.

Arrange Photos STILL not working!
Wow, I'm getting really frustrated with this. The tool, as reported in my first post in this thread, is still not working a lot of the time. Today it appears to work, because I go back to my gallery & it appears to be arranged as I arranged it. But then, a few minutes later, I'm doing something else & realize there it is... back the way it was, and the arrangement has not saved. Doesn't matter what gallery. Any gallery. I did "arrange" at least 6 times a bit ago til it appeared to stick. Of course, I might go back there & realize it didn't actually stick. [Please see Post #1 if you need more details, because I said exactly which tool has the bug. I'm trying to deal with another bug-- watermarking, so don't have more time right now.]

Merged threads - Anna Lisa, Julian, our Sorcerer on this, is chasing down a new issue and we hope to have this resolved fast. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience.
This is no longer an annoyance, now I am angry. After spending time arranging a gallery, it may stay that way for an hour or a day, then it will be rearranged. This makes Smugmug unusable and your stock answer, "i'm sorry", doesn't make it any less so. Do we get credit for the time we can't use Smugmug? I didn't think so.
At the moment, the only way to have galleries sorted the way we want them is to use a service other than Smugmug. I am looking at Zenfolio, and while I would hate to leave Smugmug where everyone knows I am at, it is looking like I have no choice. With all Zenfolio has to offer, as well as being soooo much faster than Smugmug, I'm not sure you really want folks looking at the competition.
Hi, I seem to be having the same problem here. I tried to arrange my photos a few times but they continue to go back to different arrangements.
Which sort are you using? If you're using the one's under tools make sure in
gallery settings to set the sort to "none" and "ascending" first. The
sorts/arrange under the tools drop are a one time sort. If I have a few photos
to move to different spots I first use tools/drop by filename/date taken to get
the gallery to a general sort then manually move individual photos.
I have had no problems with photos re-arranging after doing it this way.

This is a new problem. It seems to have started when they made it so collections can be sorted. After sorting, the gallery will stick for some hours or even a day or two, then the images are randomly rearranged. They don't go back to the way they were uploaded, but are randomly moved.
I have always had the gallery sort as you suggest, so that is not the problem.

Yup, we're fully aware, and a fix is in testing right now. Thanks. I hope we can get it out tonight.
I thought this problem was finally fixed. I have been struggling with my pictures rearranging themselves ever since I joined Smugmug. For the last six months (year?, I can't remember) my pictures have finally stayed where I put them. Thank God.
Now it's happening all over again. I uploaded a picture to a gallery and instead of being at the top like they have been doing of late it was at the bottom and random pictures from the middle are now at the beginning and mixed up throughout without any logical pattern. I checked and the gallery settings are still set at none and descending.
I can not tell you how frustrating this is. It takes forever to arrange the pictures in the order I want them in. All I want is for the pictures to stay put and a newly uploaded picture to be put at the top.
Now I have to start all over again with no confidence they will stay put.
Hi folks, we pushed a fix last night, can you give it a try now and let us know how we did?

Have you tried to see if what I recommended a few days ago here http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=1571769&postcount=23 helps you?
If you try it, please let us know the outcome, It would be good feedback to have.
Thanks!
I did what you suggested and I haven't noticed any changes since. But I have refrained from doing much for fear of making it worse.

Dennis, we'll have the fix out soon, in the meantime you can do this

which does set the issue straight (I've tried it myself).

I created another album, our Dubai folder (http://janik.smugmug.com/Travel-Diving/Dubai/15867011_ioBdx#1192516799_qSAvD) just a week or so prior to creating the Uganda and Rwanda albums, and have had none of the rearranging problems there.
