This is the mavericks surf contest.

When high water is predicted in half moon bay ca (usually after a storm in hawaii)

the world's best surfers are invited to compete (usually up to 10 or so) and they come in from all over the world

the prize money that yr (as i recall) was $10,000 and winner take all

this young man won the contest then shared the prize money with the other 4 or 5 contestants
