hey that gives me an idea! (unless it was your original idea)
How about a photo challenge where the photo MUST be taken during a certain time during the day. Like: "At Midnight". Shots must be done between 12:00am and 1:00am.
It would be really interesting on what kind of photos people would come up with at that time frame. Documenting what goes on during the time frame. For me, I'd go straight to the strip at midnight and shoot whatever I can. Imagine, there would be so many variations!

It would definitely be a challenge
We did that here last year. I was think much further away than that. ie..what do you usually see at 1.37pm or let people decise what a 1.37 pm shoud look like. To harry its an egret ..andy its a starbucks & to me its an old dog-eared archie comic.

No advertising is bad advertising 'eh ?
Ever wonder what it would have cost the Australian Tourism Board to buy a day or 3 as headlines around 2 countries & opening spot on the gov't owned 6 o'clock news ?
No babies, children, animals or birds
I feel that sometimes people take the easy option & don't always think in depth about the particular challenge. It is afterall a "Challenge" & its far too easy to pick up a camera & think I'll take a pic of baby x or toddler y or maybe cat or dog z, going for the "OOh aren't they cute" option.
I think to encourage people to think more about what the essence of a particular challenge is about, a qualification should be that it has No babies or Children (toddlers or older) in it, unless they are a subplot to the main challenge ie Ch 64 Contextural portraits - a doctor with a child patient. No Animals or birds, again unless they are relevant to the context such as the man holding the hawk in Challenge 64.
Hopefully it would encourage people to be more creative in their choice of subject matter and a bit more adventurous, looking at things in a new way & finding pictures where before they might have thought there was nothing.
Also it would give people who specialise in those particular areas a chance to think outside the box, a chance to try a new specialisation

For the 4th of July....
I'd like to see a challenge that runs right after the 4th of July (so those of us in the states could shoot during that time frame) that might involve one of the following: celebration / freedom / patriotism / night lights / red, white & blue / parade. These are subjects that have different meanings and concepts in different countries and don't necessarily have to do with the 4th. (Is this idea clear as mud???? I think I've been up too long...)

I agree with this concept.......it is the easy way out to appeal to the "aww factor"........or the "common hobby" factor. But people will always do it I suppose.....because there are some people who only judge the contest entries for "photoshop skills" and not realy for creativity, interpretation, or artistic content" For some people "Photoshop Skills" is what its all about. Prolly the best that can be done is to just not vote for those sorts of entries.......but even then, there will always be people who will, because they like those sort of photos......and photoshop is their personal criteria in judging a photo. Everybody is different.....personally, I look for creativity, and a photo done well within the individuals photoshop abilities........and maybe how much they have improved.......and i tend to pass by the cute babies puppies and kitties......and the strictly photoshop productions........neither of those are my favorites......but they are some peoples favorites
I went back a few pages and haven't seen this suggested yet.....
"Architectural Elements"....i.e. doorknobs, windowsills, corbells, gargoyles, steeples, etc.. anything having to do with architecture. I would love to see specifics of architecture instead of just a full shot of a house or a building. However, if that can be done with some sort of creative angle, I suppose that would be alright. Has it been done yet? I've only been around a short time.
Other thoughts would be; Black/Whites, Geometric forms, Action blurs, or Water.
The time you enjoy wasting, is not wasted time.

Shadows....
Makes an interesting topic. Also make the rules strickter. I can park a vintage car and click it with the shadow, but that does not make shadow the primary subject.
However lets say sprinklers in the trees. Due to sun angle the trees cast shadoes on the sprinklers. This would make shadow the primary subject.
Right Out of the Camera Shots - No Editing
Might have been done... but what about right out of the camera shots... with no post camera editing.
Also.. color challenges... might have been done before.. I'm new enough I don't know.. but maybe things like Blue... or Red... or with the 4th coming up for the USA... make the challenge.. Red, White or Blue and people can take pix that focus on one of those 3 colors..

How about living space?
Such as your kitchen, or bedroom, back porch... something along those lines.
I think it could be very interesting to see the results.
