I read somewhere that, when this lens is attached to a tripod or a monopod by the colar provided , the IS is switched off automatically. :dunno

It is obvious that such thing can't happen when the camera itself is attached to the tripod supporting the lens ... :):

I would like to confirm this fact.
Do you know about this ?

I've been looking and couldn't find the anwser ...
Thank you. :thumb

The newer lenses (not newer as in like a 100-400L IS I just bought at BH as opposed to one that I bought used, but as in a 70-200 2.8 L IS as opposed to a 100-400 L, i.e. lenses that were invented more recently) are able to sense when the camera is still (such as when it's on a tripod) and are smart enough to shut off the IS. The ones that can't do this tell you to turn off IS in the manual.

What I presumed was a little bit different:
The screw would have somekind of contact at it's end that would switch off the IS in spite of beeing ON on the lens ...
Did I get myself clear enought ? Hope so. :):

I've used the 70-200 IS on several occasions all handheld (IS is only active whn the shutter button is pressed), and the 300/2.8 IS--that one on a tripod; I assume the IS is similar between them & being on a tripod didn't bother the 300 at all.

Nope. The screw mount on the tripod collar has no connection to the lens, that shuts off IS. The lens just "knows" it's stable, and doesn't try to stabalize.

You will love this lens I think it's great for portraits too but maybe little long.
By the way mine was bought in early 2005 and does not have the auto shut off.
    IS is amazing too.

It is easy to tell when the camera cannot tell it is stable. Half press the shutter button to focus (not shoot) and if the focus point starts creeping left or right, turn the IS off OOPS!!

Great lens, Antonio, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it. You'll also build up your arms muscles. lol3.gif

My basic travel gear is the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200. Three excellent, fast lenses that cover the range. I take these whenever I travel. I should bring the 1.4 extender, but I'm not crazy about it.

I own the 70-200 2.8L IS and just can't speak highly enough about it. You will find it to be an exceptional lens and a joy to shoot with.

I discovered DGrin just last night. What a wonderful site :):

    Heavy lens - pfft!
Prior to buying my 70-200 IS, I had the Sigma 120-300/2.8 for a week which I did lots of handheld shots. If you guys want to talk about heavy, try this lens for a few days and then you'll truly appreciate the size & weight of the Canon 70-200 IS.

Congrats on you new purchase Antonio, you're going to love this lens.

How many apertures are reduced by the use of the 1.4 multiplier ?
    Does the 2.8 becomes 4.0 ?
    Or 5.6 ?
