I read somewhere that, when this lens is attached to a tripod or a monopod by the colar provided , the IS is switched off automatically. :dunno
It is obvious that such thing can't happen when the camera itself is attached to the tripod supporting the lens ... :
I would like to confirm this fact.
Do you know about this ?
I've been looking and couldn't find the anwser ...
Thank you. :thumb

The screw would have somekind of contact at it's end that would switch off the IS in spite of beeing ON on the lens ...
Did I get myself clear enought ? Hope so. :

Nope. The screw mount on the tripod collar has no connection to the lens, that shuts off IS. The lens just "knows" it's stable, and doesn't try to stabalize.
Next week I'll have a new toy ... :
Regards .
You'll love it!:D
I now have four L lens and this is my favorite due to the range provided and clarity and color I get from it-

By the way mine was bought in early 2005 and does not have the auto shut off.
IS is amazing too.

Great lens, Antonio, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it. You'll also build up your arms muscles.

Do you travel by car ?
We travel in group and sometimes 1h~1,5h throught the jungle...
I do not have back problems usually. But after some days ...
I did not know the lens had auto-sut off.
I have already an assignment: Take pictures of my son and friends in the kite-surf next sunday if there is wind and if I have the lens. It is supposed to arrive at the shop during this week.

Prior to buying my 70-200 IS, I had the Sigma 120-300/2.8 for a week which I did lots of handheld shots. If you guys want to talk about heavy, try this lens for a few days and then you'll truly appreciate the size & weight of the Canon 70-200 IS.
Congrats on you new purchase Antonio, you're going to love this lens.
Will it be here tomorrow ?
Sigma 120-300/2.8 = 2.6 kg is something not to make a walk in the garden ...:):
Does the 2.8 becomes 4.0 ?
Or 5.6 ?
