At this point, never having owned one, I would be kicking myself for not buying the IS always wondering if that shot would have turned out better if I had the IS. I'm not a professional, and need every edge I can get to get that shot. My best one to date is this one taken with my buddies 40D and 300 f/4. I’ve definitely got the bug. Still always looking to get that one shot. Thanks for the input. Cheers
Great picture! No, I don't think that IS would have made that any better. Any lack of sharpness was likely due to subject motion (your son jumping) - a faster shutter speed can help that. The shot looks sharp to me though!
I have owned both the 70-200 F/4 and the IS version and I wouldn't trade the IS for anything! The IS allows me to use the lens with slow shutter speeds (with static scenes or little movement) without lugging my tripod with me. I have razor-sharp shots at 200mm with a shutter speed of 1/30 second - I could never do that without IS unless I had my tripod.
Hey Antonio!!
Congrats on your new lens! Your images are fantastic.
I almost missed this thread. Boy, you gotta love the Canon
70-200 2.8 lenses! I was at the zoo today, here are a couple
of shots from my non-IS version of this lens:
Canon 10D, 70-200mm/2.8 L at 200mm f4 1/160s ISO 100 (with Monopod)
Canon 10D, 70-200mm/2.8 L at 200mm f2.8 1/500s at ISO 800
Canon 10D, 70-200mm/2.8 L at 195mm f2.8 1/1250s at ISO 400
The image quality is simply excellent. Yet I wish it had more reach. I already
see myself buying the 1.4x Extender. After that my next (dream) lens is the
Canon 300mm 2.8L IS for even more wildlive fun. Keep up the good work,
Im looking forward to seeing more images from you!

A question... can the IS version be tripod mounted for tracking setting? Thanks. Neil
Neil, may be I am mis-understanding, but of course we can mount the lens in a tripod, mono pod, via ball-head or not, and it works fine.
I myself have shot with it on a tripod without ball-head and I did it work very easily. The tripod is even very good for us to rest for a while with the lens ready for action.
However, never leave the combo alone. It can get wings and fly away.
But from my humble experience, I think a tripod with a good ball-head is the best option.

Thanks for replying Antonio. IS is usually recommended only for hand-held and not for use on a tripod. But since, when you are tracking and have it set on IS setting 2, you are moving the camera (on purpose) I wondered if it mattered if it was hand-held or on a tripod. It seems to me it would make tracking easier if the lens was on a tripod, so long of course as the IS still operated with the lens on a tripod.

Neil, hello.
When I use the lens I don't care if the setting is at 1 or at 2.
I am sure it makes some kind of difference but I have never tried to change and watch the results.
Most of the times I have rather use the lens with the monopod. I have tendency - which I try to contradict all the time - to set an aperture and forget the speed.
I try to do better and better all the time with more commitment and dedication.
Man, I look like a priest trying to convince the others ... rofl
I want to shoot bullfighting very soon and use the lens quite some times...
These shots were done with the 20D + 1.4 converter + 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM
Looks good!

#1) IS doesn't do squat if one jumps when 1.5 lbs of gun powder explodes.
30D | 1/400 | f4.0 | iso 200 | 110mm
#2) After 3 or 4 times I finally settled down. One of my 77 shots captured the muzzle flash and so I was a happy camper. The 21 gun salute was for the Chile Defense Minister who was laying a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Hi everyone. Congratulations Antonio, is a wonderful lens. I love mine and I allways have it with me when out shooting. This image I took last Summer during a yearly Flamenco festival in the south of Spain.

Hiya guys new here, and I've also just got this amazing lens. It is without a doubt the best lens I have ever used. Yes it large, and heavy but it's a great lens.
Yeah I've been reading your post since before you got your lens. It's been interesting reading. I just got mine, and have been enjoy it. I'm new here, and been with SmugMug only a few weeks. I've been a amature and semi-pro photography for years, and this is my 2nd L lens but by far my best one! Hope to see more of your work.
Hi Antonio. I have had the 70-200 2.8 IS for several years also. I call it my money lense. It has been a very good performer. From a horse show I was shooting last summer. My daughter.

I was wondering where this thread went too...
My latest triumph with the 70-200 mounted on a telescope mount for this picture. Mind you, this is a compilation of 32 frames for this image done with a stacking software for astrophotography and finished in PS CS3.
Here is a thread that shows the equipment used and some info on how the shot was taken

How are you ?:D
I bought my 70-200 about a year ago and it is really good.
You want to buy the 300 f/2.8 Oh boy. That's very expensive. But if you like it and can afford it, go ahead.
We only live once.
