How many apertures are reduced by the use of the 1.4 multiplier ?
    Does the 2.8 becomes 4.0 ?
    Or 5.6 ?

Today is sunday and I am going to the beach to phtograph the surf.
I have noticed yesterday that the 200 mm * 1.6 (20D) = 320 mm is rather short for this kind of pictures.
I have been thinking to buy the multilier 1,4 x to use in these situations.
As the lack of light is not a problem, I'v been reading, you told yourselves that the duplicator works very well on the 70~200, and this attachment is very simple in therms of optical, I decided to buy one.
This is going to give 320mm *1.4 = 448 mm ! Looks good to me.
    220456.jpg
Now, at the present moment, I have someone in the US who could bring it to Portugal very soon and I could earn some money.

Where shall I buy it on line ?
    I've been to
    home;jsessionid=GpC1hNmLMz%21-386120115?O=ProductDetail&A=showItemLargeImage&Q=&sku=220456

I know this sounds like a silly question but you do have an experience I do not : to buy on line with reliability in the USA.

    Thank you.

    Congrats on the new toy!!!

Because I haven't seen an answer to you question ... here goes:

The two numbers represent the maximum aperature at the two ends of the focal length range. It appears (I'm no optical engineer, so I have to take this on faith) that building a constant aperature zoom is much more difficult/expensive than is building a zoom with a varying aperature.

But, that doesn't make a lot of sense as you have the f/2.8 lens, which is, I presume, a constant aperature lens. Yeah, I'm confused too.

Scott may be you are right.
The use of the multipler makes the 70~200 to behave like a not so sophisticated lens, making variations from 70~200 on the aperture.
May be the f/4 is for the 70 mm and the 4.5 is for the 200 mm. ne_nau.gif

Well folks, I'm just around the corner (less than two weeks) from purchasing this great lens. It's been 2 years in the saving and I'll have my very first "L" lens. Everything I've read here and all the links that have been posted solidified my decision to get this lens first. Sure will be a big change from the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses that I currently have. The 55-200 will be going back in its box and into retirement.

Sorry, rambling here, but when dollars are scarce such an impending purchase is certainly worth getting excited over. :D

Congrats on your decision and the soon-to-be-your-very-own new toy!

I hope you don't mean you gonna leave this 55-200 rot on the shelf? The beauty of (d)SLR world partially relies on the fact that the glass tends to keep its retail value. Not always 100% of course, but you still can get some decent funds for it. Here (Flea Market) , or at Fred Miranda, or at local camera store, or at least on the eBay, if nothing else works...

Cheers Nik. No, not a full retirement. My ultimate goal after getting some more "L" glass is to get the 5D. Hubby said he'd happily take the 300D off my hands then and would be happy to use the kit lenses... of course I'm sure he'll want to "borrow" the good glass, too... he might be lucky. rolleyes1.gif Then again, the 300D will still make a good backup camera for those just-in-case moments... so he might be pushing his luck there, too. ROFL.

That's weird, according to my 20D, I always get f/4.0 at any focal length with my 70-200/IS + 1.4x TC combo wide open.

When using the TC with the 70-200IS lens, just keep in mind that, under certain conditions, you may get some CA (chromatic aberration). I'm not sure if my lens is more sensitive to CA, but I know that I can get some blooming or CA on subjects with that are against a bright background (sky).

    Kite-surf shooting
The day after tomorrow my son invited me to go and photograph kite-surf at the beach.
He has http://galeria.apkite.pt/ here at SmugMug.

This is what I am going to do following the excellent advises you all gave me, which I thank.

    Equipmment:
    1. 20 D and 350 D
    2.1. 16~35 f2.8
    2.2. 24~70 f2.8 ( successfully repaired at last ! )
    2.3. 70~200 f2.8
to used one at a time in each camera ( :): )
    3. Flash 430 SX
    4. Sandisk extreme III 1 GB
    5. Other stuff to store data.
    6.
    Monopod
    7. Tripod

    Cameras setting:
    A. 400 ISO
    B. AI SERVO to follow the subject with the center point retaining the finger at mid course ready to shoot and waisting the battery's camera.
    C. Evaluative metering
    D. Speed priority at 2.500 after evaluating if the aperture is good under different scenarios.
    E. Exposure compensation: None
    F. May be I'll use the flash with High-speed Sync
    G. RAW ( JPG ???? )
    H. Custom Functions: Long Exposure noise redution OFF

Well, tell me about this if you please.
You are far more experienced than I am and you are gentle people (as myself) who likes to help the others.
    Thank you. :):

    Antonio,
While our experience action shooters are shooting beer.gif, here are my 0.0002 of the f/stop :-)

Since you have two bodies and you're going to the windy sandy beach where lens changing is rather unsafe, I'd recommend to use 20D with 70-200 and 350D with a wider one. I'm not sure which one, but since life usually asks for extremes, I'd start with 16-35 (and kept 24-70 in the bag just in case).

I really don't think you need a flas, unless you're going for portraits at a close distance. In which case I'd have 24-70 on for portraits (16-35 in the bag), and probably had the flash attached.

1GB is not a lot. And I don't know the schedule, so I'd say - shoot jpegs. After all, it's a sunny day on the beach, you'd have a few miutes to set up your custom WB, so nothing to worry about...

Flash and HSS... HSS is not needed for portraits, and flash cannot reach those surfers 100 ft away, hence, no worries..

Long exposure: since you're going for 1/2500th of a sec, I would not worry about it either.

In addition: set the drive to H and do not use MLU(:-)

    Good luck and god speed!

    HTH

    PS
    Don't panic! And don't forget a towel...:-)))

The flash is just in case they fly over me - my son told me they are good - and I'll be on a pontoon (not a bridge. hope it is correct and you understand).
They would not be that far of me and the flash could give a fill in...

Yes. I'll go for the jpgs. 1 Gb is litlle but it's what I've got and don't want to spend more money.

I found the flash is very hard to use for action - unless you have a time to set it up (like Mr.Peter Wolf does).
Which you won't, since it's an action. Hence, I'd say - forget it...

I was not kidding about a towel, though :-) It provides a great protection for your camera, especially if you gonna be that close to the waves..

This past Saturday I was assisting at a wedding. I used my friend's 70-200 f/2.8L and had some frustrations with getting it to lock focus in AF mode.

Is it normal for these lenses to focus hunt as much as I experienced?
