I just KNOW you've all been waiting for my Prius update, so here goes:

I got my iPod integration kit in the mail, and, taking all of your advice, I hightailed it down to Phantom Electronics to get it installed. While there I decided to do two other things: they installed the stiffening plate that I had purchased (thumb.gif) and I also had them replace the ginormous Sirius antenna that the dealer had put in.

And then the problems began. They did the install of the DICE (the name of the iPod int. kit), and the Sirius antenna. All was fine. I drive away, playing with it, and the Sirius is having what seem to be major reception issues. Did I mess up by changing the antenna? WTF?

I drove back, we troubleshot the whole thing...mebbe it's the batteries in the back of the prius causing problems, mebbe it's a bad antenna, mebbe it's not plugged in, mebbe we need to reset the Sirius receiver...d00ds, we tried everything.

Finally, resetting the Sirius receiver seemed to work. Mind you, I now have the Sirius antenna on the front of my car, which is NOT where I want it. I drive off, and Sirius is working perfectly, I'm so happy. I switch to the DICE, it's working great. I switch back to Sirius, and it's all f'd up.

That's when I realized that the problem all along was the DICE. This is a new update to the unit, since they've just figured out how to support the '06 Prius, which was a challenge for them for whatever reason. Now I'm pretty darn sure it's a design flaw, as on other guy on the prius forum has the same problem.

Bad news: I spent a total of 5 hours on this damn thing, it's still not working.

Good news: I had the good sense to listen to you all and not install it myself. When the problems started I would have had to go pay someone anyway, and would have had the added uncertainty of "What did I f up?" to deal with.

Anyway, thanks for talking me out of that one. It's still not fixed, but the one thing I know is I'm not going to be the one fixing it!

Thanks, but major bummer. So this DICE isn't a Toyota thing? Does Toyota make an OEM unit?

No, they don't. This is supposed to be the one that integrates with the display the best, but like I said, they had all kinds of trouble getting it to display on the '06s. I mean, the '07s were out before they got it figgered out. So now it's compatible with the '06 and '07s. I'll get it sorted. :D

This whole thing just makes me think... how hard is it to install fuzzy DICE in your car? Don't they just loop over the rear view mirror?

Nah chris, these are new age Fuzzy Dice. They spider into the main wireharness and provide gps tracking, satellite radio reception, tell you when their is bird poo on your roof, and can even tell you when you didn't put on enough deoderant.

$135 for the unit, $75 for the install. I have full confidence it will work out. The only thing I'll lose is my time. That is annoying.

Especially since thats the reason we told you to go have it installed in the first place. However, it sounds like this place is taking care of it for you. Didn't you order it yourself, then bring it in to have it installed? In which case, wow, I'm surprised they are supporting you in your troubles at all!

Yeah, although the piece I left out was the cost of the Sirius antenna and install. The got $200 from me that day. Oh, and they installed the stiffening bracket gratis.

Phantom Electronics, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, CA. Fine, upstanding people, IMO.

Just got the wonderful news today that I've finally gone and cracked the rear subframe mounts on my E46. Suprisingly I lasted almost 64,000 miles. The upside is that the fix requires complete removal of the rear diff so I'll finally have a reason to upgrade to a 3.91 rear ratio since there won't be any additional labor to throw it in.

So dugmar mentioned this as being a biiiig problem. Is this all E46's? some? by year? by mileage? I'm just wondering if I should tell mom to go get her 325ci looked at.

E36 and E46 both suffered from this issue, especially in cars driven hard over crappy roads. The higher HP and torque of the m3 only makes it worse as does a modified suspension as on my car. It's a very common problem that if caught early enough can be fixed rather easily. The trouble is that to get at it the entire rear end has to come off the car. I'm not sure what the dealer fix is but this is what I'm using...

Um, There is a 50/50 chance I am going to break my #1 rule and move to Cali in the next 2-8 months. Ridgecrest is where I would be moving too.

No, still trying to figure out why its just cranking.

My stepfather talked to one of his friends and he had a suggestion for me regarding the timing.

Set the crank to TDC, lock in the flywheel, lock in the cams on both sides, take off the cam gears on both sides, take out the flywheel lock and turn the engine one revolution in the normal direction. He said this will reset the timing, but I don't see how it will do anything. Is it worth a try?

I know the cost goes up, but if I had to choose CA over southeastern MI (again)... let's say I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Thanks I'll need the luck when it comes to having a job lined up prior to me getting there. Someone is working on getting me a job on base there doing systems admin work, but I'll believe it when I see it. I won't miss the the snow, or the cold, but I will miss not paying out the butt every year to register my car.

Just to be clear, Ridgecrest, CA is NOT coastal california. Big difference. Ask Kendal.

Or take a look at the satellite images in google maps. No green in sight.

    New Toy
    IMG_6783.jpg

    More snappies here

Took delivery last tuesday PM. Specs are: 1999, 72k miles (73k now! :D), leather, cruise, AC, etc etc. From what I have read it has the 'Leather Package' which includes the 'Popular Equipment' and 'Touring' packages. This means it has a torsen and 15" alloy wheels. Unfortunately it also means it has a blose sound system.

Condition is very good. Some ding and scratches in the paint, but nothing I wouldn't expect on a ~7 year old car. The interior and top are simply perfect. I spent over an hour test driving and inspecting this car w/ a flashlight and a checklist and the only thing I could find wrong w/ it was the passenger side speaker is shot. Sadly the blose sound system includes special 0.5 ohm drivers in the doors.

Last weekend I borrowed dad's garage and tore into the door. I replaced the failed driver w/ a 3.5" infiniti driver I had lying around from a VW I owned years ago. I now have a factory bose 8" 0.5 ohm driver in one door and a 3.5" 4 ohm aftermarket speaker in the other... In theory it should not work at all, but in practice it isn't that bad at all. It won't win any awards, but it is good enough until I can come up w/ some cash and some time to gut the bose system and put in something aftermarket.

Drove it to work 3 days last week, then a bunch on the weekend. The car is just silly fun. I even managed a quick ride 'round town Sunday w/ the top down. True 'vert season is over here in New England... but I was able to verify the heater works... well! mwink.gif

Overall I'm as happy as a pig in ...

Oh I know. I've seen pics, seen maps (close to death valley), so I know it will be nothing like the coastal area's. That will be a big adjustment for me too cause where I live I'm always within 5 minutes of a lake.... But I will be able to get zcars in better condition and cheaper in cali than I can here....
