Congrats on the new car, enjoy it. Remember it's not human and you can fix anything on it that you break.

    A blast it is!

(No) Thanks for making me look at the forecast. I hadn't seen that dose of 'good' news. I'm utterly kicking myself for not driving it to work this AM. Instead we took my buddy's VW. By the time we got to the NH/Mass border we'd seen 3-4 verts top down already.. And it's nearly 70 out right now.

    Doh.

Well, maybe GF will be down w/ an after-dark buzz 'round town tonight. I had missed joy-riding!

Took delivery last tuesday PM. Specs are: 1999, 72k miles (73k now! :D), leather, cruise, AC, etc etc. From what I have read it has the 'Leather Package' which includes the 'Popular Equipment' and 'Touring' packages. This means it has a torsen and 15" alloy wheels. Unfortunately it also means it has a blose sound system.

Congrats!!! You won't regret it... one thing I almost never have to worry about here in SoCal is the weather!

Just got the wonderful news today that I've finally gone and cracked the rear subframe mounts on my E46. Suprisingly I lasted almost 64,000 miles. The upside is that the fix requires complete removal of the rear diff so I'll finally have a reason to upgrade to a 3.91 rear ratio since there won't be any additional labor to throw it in.
headscratch.gif i'm cornfused. Granted i'm not up to speed on working on bimmers, but how does removing a diff = swapping the gearset?

I'm not a mechanic either, but I reckon the final gearing in the diff can't be accessed unless you pull it out of the car. ne_nau.gif

In German cars (well, I know in MBs anywayss), you don't swap gearsets you swap diffs. They make their diffs so needlessly complicated that very expensive and unique machinery is needed to properly line things up internally, so you just replace the whole unit instead.

No, still trying to figure out why its just cranking.

My stepfather talked to one of his friends and he had a suggestion for me regarding the timing.

Set the crank to TDC, lock in the flywheel, lock in the cams on both sides, take off the cam gears on both sides, take out the flywheel lock and turn the engine one revolution in the normal direction. He said this will reset the timing, but I don't see how it will do anything. Is it worth a try?

    Yes.

Just trailer it to Lothar Schuettler in Rockville, MD. He'll fix it up (and buy himself a boat too...but he really does do a good job, one of the original bmw importers/mechanics in the US - I know his website says since 1984, but he was working on my dad's 2002 back in 1970). Or just buy the black on black 89k miles 1986 M5 he has for $9900

    Hehe I already have a <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toyota</st1:place></st1:City>. Story time…
    <o:p> </o:p>
My stepdad bought my stepsister an ae-86 Corolla (1986 RWD) with 70kmi on it from the original owner for $1500. She never changed the oil for about a year and wondered why the car wouldn’t start. Turns out she fried all the bearings in it, what a surprise. My step-dad replaced almost the whole bottom end and all is good now. He sold it to me for $800.
    <o:p> </o:p>
Only problem is, my lovely step-sister lost the title so she has to apply for a new one which takes up to 60 days, so I still don’t have a car to drive.

YOU are going to drive a Toyota? YOU!? Another illusion shattered. You could have gotten an old Benz diesel with that money. If I had my car I would have loaned to you ust to keep you out of a Toyota.

Zac, don't listen to him. Once your E34 is fixed, promote progressive automotive evolution and push the Toyota off a cliff rolleyes1.gifroflrolleyes1.gif

Yeah the Toyota is for the winter since it already has a little rust on it.

Dragon, I knew you’d like it. It now only has 90kmi! How much is worth to a drifter?

Anybody need a set of Mechanix Gloves (I know Zac needs them, though I don't know if he cares to use them). I have a pair of size Large Original 0.5 gloves - never used (I know I should have just ordered my normal glove size - XL - rather than pay attention to the sizing chart). $15 will take them shipped to you (cheap as heck considering they $28.95, but I just want to cut my losses - the company I ordered them from, which was through Amazon, was kinda a pain - first they sent the wrong ones, then it took them like 3 days to figure out how they were the wrong ones, and I didn't get this correct pair until like 1.5 weeks later)
