I have over 2000 images indexed, that's almost twice as many images uploaded on my site. I only worry about captions and links. Captionned images usually take under two weeks to get indexed. I still don't like nicenames for photos because when you move things around, they have to be indexed again.
I think you should add a navigation bar with links to categories, popular and recent photos and keyword page.
Hi Erick,
How do you know how many images have been indexed please?
Caroline
Well, that's a bit disconcerting. When I search for my smug site (looking at image results), I get 19 image results. When I search using my blog I get 102 results.
When I search for my smug site looking at web results I get 1790 results. So I'm getting decent exposure on the site but not on images.
There are keywords but not captions in smug (for the most part).
All of the photos I display in my blog use alt= on the img src statements. The bulk of my blog posts contain photos, and I tend to add blog entries more than once a week.
I looked at your site, and it looks like you are using both captions and keywords. Do you have a sense for which is getting the most benefit?
site:yoursite.com
I get one photo returned from my blog and every photo/thumb has link, alt
and title tags.
I have 19,452 bird photos on my Smugmug site, almost all have captions and
keywords. I get 221 for domain and 61 for nickname returned.
Seems to be missing a few.
I'm going back into don't care mode, its a beautiful afternoon and I'll go for a walk, or a lie down or something I wonder if google favours Erick because he has google search on his site and Adsense........?
Hope you are keeping well Allen.
Denise - I love your recent blog pics - is the new camera pleasing you?
I looked at your site, and it looks like you are using both captions and keywords. Do you have a sense for which is getting the most benefit?
Definitely captions. I was getting similar results before I began using keywords and before nicenames were introduced. Captionned images are indexed within two weeks. When I look at the search terms people are finding my site, it nearly always relate to the caption. I use keywords for navigation, smart galleries and it makes lots of in-site links.

Wow, 2000 indexed? And they actually come up in a Google image search?
That's strange because all of my images have captions, and yet even though the URLs have been submitted, none of the images are indexed.
I agree about the nav bar. I started making one, and got lost as to how to put it all together, and gave up. I've been meaning to try again. I was afraid if I didn't get it finished all at once, my site would look a mess until I got it done. Can you work on it in stages without actually letting it go live until you're ready?

You can work on a navbar bar and keep it hidden to viewers until it's ready.
All it takes is a couple CSS rules to hide it when not logged in.
Regarding the use of "site:yoursite.com" on Google....... Typing it with no spaces results in terribly low results for my domain. Putting a space after the colon shows considerably more results although still very low.
I've also done everything I know possible according to SM a long time ago but I have never had any luck with this.
Lou and Dave,
Our Chief Geek suggests you contact Google about this.
"The Sitemaps site says it needs to be less than 10MB but can be compressed (theirs is ~650KB compressed) and less then 50,000 URLs (theirs is ~33,000), so it should be fine."
That's for your file, Lou.
Sebastian
Contact Google? . Please ask you Chief Geek: Who at Google should I contact for such a problem? Any idea?

My search was using Google Image search which is showing only a paltry 48 results. However when doing Google Web search, I get 23,600 results.
Andy are you saying we should always add an album description for SEO purposes? That may explain some things for me as I don't add album descriptions to any of my galleries. It's interesting because the few galleries that I do have album descriptions in come up in Google image search. Hmmm.

Yes and that is prominently stated on our SEO help page, too
Gallery description, what exactly goes in there? I have descriptions now for
every gallery. I have many bird galleries, do I have to mention/discuss every
different bird in each gallery? This doesn't make much sense.
I think this is the major problem.
Why does Smugmug not add a title and alt tag to each photo link using the
caption info?
So I was bummed to see that Gallery information couldn't be added through a Quick Setting. Boo!
Andy, for a pro like myself, it would be wonderful to be able to add a hard coded album description via a saved Quick Setting (and gallery keywords too!)
I would put Rochester NY Wedding Photographers in the gallery description then I may add more info to that such as wedding /reception location etc.
Regarding the use of "site:yoursite.com" on Google....... Typing it with no spaces results in terribly low results for my domain. Putting a space after the colon shows considerably more results although still very low.
That is so odd.
Without a space after the colon searching for my site name returns 1960 result for web, and 18 results for images. With a space after the colon my site shows 26,500 results for web, and 401 results for images.
But wait - with a space, the searches return a combination of references to my site and to other sites. The image search shows mostly images from other sites (although mine are shown first). I guess at this point I don't trust the "with a space" results. I've scanned the "without a space" results, and those look to be only from my site.
If anyone else it trying the "with a space" option, I suggest that you look very closely at the results.
Search Engine Optimization...
Google does not see my Homepage Meta Description. Is this because I have another domain????
Can someone give some advice on how to optimize my google search through my smugmug site. There are several cities in a small radius of where I live. I would like for me website to be found when people search for the general area which is Northwest arkansas (wedding photographer or newborn photographer), then also for the specific cities, such as rogers, bentonville, fayettveille & Springdale. Right now when I google my name for newborn photographers, I show up in the second page for the specific cities but when I search the general area (northwest arkansas). I'm no where to be found. Being found for the general area of Northwest Arkansas is very important because this entire area is referenced to as that.
Does any of that makes sense??? Any advice on ways I can get my site closer to the top of google search would be great!
Thanks.
I noticed that you have a blog but it has very few posts. If you don't post to your blog it doesn't do you much good. Also, I noticed that instead of linking to your smug site you have uploaded the photos directly to you blog. That doesn't drive viewers to your smug site either. Instead, I recommend that you use a combination of <a href= and <img src= statements as shown in the post Adding photos to your blog. I couldn't find a link from your blog to your smug site. There should be an obvious link from blog to smug.
The few keywords on your site say nothing about your location or your specialty.

I'm not worried about my blog, it is under construction and will have much better findability stuff when it goes live.
Also, I've placed keywords in many many galleires and in the meta descriptions. this is what i've put in keywords in my slideshow gallery and a couple others: Snaps by Poteat Photography, Specializing in wedding, newborn, children, senior, pet and maternity sessions. Serving all of northwest arkansas including Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, Bella Vista, Gravette, Siloam Springs, Fort Smith. Will also travel to Southwest Missouri including Joplin, Neosho, & Springfield.
For some reason google is not finding me unless I search my name. The only place I can be found is under google maps- but thats because I have a google place accounts!
Help me be found!
Is it because I have a seperate domain with wolf snaps????
Page1of 1
your blog doesn't use your snapsbypoteat.com domain name. DEAD SIMPLE to do on blogspot and your domain host.
you have zero backlinks indexed by Google. The more that other places link to you, the higher your PageRank will be.
As already stated, I'm not worried about my blog right now it is UNDER CONSTRUCTION. It says that simply at the top. I'm focusing on my web-site and why google isn't finding it- I'll get to my blog when it's finished.
I don't get what 'the one giant keyword is that no one would use'?? The keyword is 'northwest arkansas wedding newborn photography' or something else like that. I don't see one giant word??? I'm confused.
and what is a backlink???
Seems like if writing a post in this forum can be found in google before my website does even with all the different keywords and text's i've put throughout my website, and it's still not showing up all the way back to page 25 - then something else is wrong. ????

Thanks Erick :-)
That gives me a grand total of 7!!
You obviously have some special knack - many of my galleries have descriptions, images captioned and keyworded

Yes, it is. I feel like I'm still learning the camera, but I do like it!
And you're right - I'm going to stop looking at my google image results and head outside to enjoy some glorious weather.

Oh my. I did this for my site and 40 image results show. 40?! And none of it is my work. It's all dgrin avatars and junk.
I have over 38,000 images on my site. All of them are keyworded and captioned.
VERY frustrating! I've been a Smugmug subscriber for about 5 years too! Oy.
