Those are usually cash based transactions. If we don't know how much cash to bring, then there are going to be problems. If the roommates each plan on using a credit card, then the lodge will have to accommodate that. If the lodge doesn't, one roommate would have to pay the full bill then collect the other roommate's share from the roommate.

I've been on many photo workshops and never has the cost and payment been so confusing.

This is NOT a workshop. It's an informal shootout. You're not paying anything to anybody for the running of the workshop or for the instruction. SmugMug is covering the costs of the pros and a nice meal. The rest is on you. We're coordinating rooms because that's the only way to deal with a large block of rooms. But if this were a workshop, it would be much different. Much smaller, for one. More service for another. Every cent you deposited goes straight to the hotel to cover your room charge.

Think of this more as a community event that the community of Dgrin is responsible for. Sure, the pros are taken care of, and there's that nice dinner. You even have a volunteer (me) spending hours on this to make it nice for everyone. But it's a community event and it relies on the community to make it a success. If you come to it with expectations of the service that you're used to on a workshop, that's just not possible with 70 people. deal.gif

Hey all - we're doing the best we can! We (I) heard many of you @ Glacier - and I don't forget these things.

We're working on making this better this year, please, all, just know we're working hard to make it better. This is a DGRIN trip, with Smuggy contributions. It is run by volunteers (David, me, Schmoo).

Anyone who wants to offer help, let DavidTO know in a PM or Email, thanks.

    The rest is on you.

This is the piece that was a big unknown until I started asking questions. I don't think anyone here would expect someone to show up without knowing ahead of time what they are responsible for. My questions were an attempt to find out.

I think we are all set now. I had been waiting for an announcement telling us what to expect the balance due to be. At least a range since it could vary depending on the room assignment. Since the announcement never came I decided to ask away. My understanding is that payment was handled differently in years past and this bit of information was probably just overlooked due to all that it going on.

    Thanks!

Is anybody else getting antsy? This is going to be my first shootout (did a workshop, but this is way different), so I'm looking forward to the "plan your own adventure" aspect of this. A bit more freedom to sort of wander where you choose and soak up knowledge from 70+ talented peers. :D

I can't wait. These next few weeks are going to be particularly hellish for me at work because of some deadlines, so this shootout is the light at the end of the tunnel for me right now. I want to get out there and party! Er, and shoot. Yeah. mwink.gif

    Hi Andy -

What is on your equipment list for the shootout? I'm new at this and am not sure what to bring and want to resist bringing everything plus the kitchen sink.

Russ and I are really looking forward to the trip and seeing you again.

    w00p :D

    Well, here goes:

    Camera body

Lenses - wide, mid, and some sorta tele. Macro if
    you have it.

Filters - neutral density and polarizer

    Sturdy Tripod

    Remote

    Ball Head

Panorama Gear? If you have it.

Plenty of CF cards to get you through the day, or the whole trip, if you don't have a lappy or storage device.

    Flashlight for nighttime

See DaveV's and jdryan's and stuffjunkie's posts above for more!

Karen, you're only 30-40 min North of me (I'm in Thousand Oaks), if you wanna stop by for 30 min I'll be happy to prime you guys up (I've been to all shootouts and to Moab/Arches).
Otherwise see you in two weeks:-) mwink.gif

I'd like to say that the named volunteers, and the unnamed volunteers (that would be just about everyone)
do a hell of a job helping each other out. With this many people involved, it goes fairly smooth.
The white board should make everything clear as to what's happening, when.

This will be the third shootout that Kate and I have gone to, the forth if you include the mini shootout in DC.
I really enjoy seeing everyone and telling lies about how great I am. :D I know that this is a photo trip, and
I do want to get a couple of nice shots. But even if I only brought the p&s, I'd still have a good time with
    great folks from here.

Our (mine and Kate's) pre shoot starts in 2 weeks. We'll see you in Utah.
(of course, if I have the internet at our motels, I may post a few shots that you others won't get):D

I have heard there are some people with $$$ related questions still. If you have such questions, ask them here. There are no secrets, or surprises. Nobody's going to be upset about you asking a question. If you don't ask it we can't help :D

We want you all to be comfortable and understand exactly and specifically how things work.

Keep in mind this is a COMMUNITY event, with help and sponsorship by SmugMug.

If you have a question, ask it here in the open forum! Thanks.

Okay then, just to make sure I am 100% clear:

The deposit we made only goes towards the rack rate cost of lodging at red cliff lodge and a portion of the shared cost of the meeting room we will be using every night.

We will each be expected to cover the remaining balance or our lodging fee.

Smugmug covers the cost of the pros and one very nice meal (and possibly one very bright red hat).

We are totally on our own for any $$ required for shared rental car, shared gas costs, emergency memory cards purchases, meals, cowboy hat, sunscreen, national park fees, etc, etc, etc. Since some of these will be shared costs of unknown amounts (i.e. gas, rental car), cash is a good thing to bring.

    Sound correct?

    Hey Andrew,

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Thank you! You hit it right on the head and I am disappointed if this info was not made clear from the start. In the last few weeks - on a nearly daily basis - I have updated the first post in this thread to reflect as much information as I knew and made efforts to open the floor up for questions. I really had hoped that anyone that did have doubts or concerns would voice them right here for the benefit of those who were shy about speaking up.

AFAIK the shootouts have always been that way: you are responsible for what you eat, what you drive, what you bring. Smuggy is donating the time of the pros and is hosting dinner one of those nights. The $300 deposit is paid to hold your spot, and also because the hotel requires a deposit to make sure that our (huge chunk of) rooms are booked.

The rest is up to you, so if you want to trim your costs down by bringing your own supplies or go all out with the lobster dinner, you can do that.

Just to reiterate, here are a couple of posts from the last week or so with information:

    http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=917932&postcount=269

Any other questions or doubts pleeeeeeeeeeeeeze ask!

And the other tidbit I want to add --

If you are not driving into Moab with your own car, or splitting the rental cost fees associated with a vehicle, and currently planning on hitching rides with cars with space, please consider chipping some money to the drivers.

After all, someone had to rent the car!

I saw one individual looking who is renting a car and was looking for someone to split the car with in the transportation thread, but didn't see any takers. I can pretty much guarantee that he'll be driving people around...

    We all chip in...

I seem to say this a lot in this thread (lol3.gif) but unless you have specifically requested otherwise your roommate was randomly assigned.

And just to be clear, it's two to a unit ... unless you have specifically requested otherwise. thumb.gif

It really depends on the preferences. Last time (Montana 2007) I shot about 15..20Gb per day (I used two 10.1mp Canon 40D bodies).

Whew (or:whew), I should be OK. 5Gb/day would be no problem, at 20Gb/day I'll be a delete monkey. I never gave it a thought until I shot a bicycle race last month and chewed thru 8Gb in about 2 hours. I have since ordered a few extra cards, looks like I ordered enough.:D

GB means nothing, it's dependant on what body you use and if you are shooting RAW or jpg. I've shot 7000+ images on one trip before. That includes culling during the shoot. How many did I keep in the end? That's an entirely different story.
