OK, so I guess it's time to spill the beans, or, er, uh, Markham has already spilled them!

We'll be publishing a Blurb book of the Best of Glacier. The special deal that we get is outlined in the post from Markham I linked above.

So, here's the deal: GET YOUR IMAGES INTO US, and we'll get them in the book. Then other Dgrinners can purchase the book, and get free shipping. Schmoo will be putting the book together. She write good! :D

Spread the word, and if you've been slacking on getting your images in, get on it!

We'll have the book ready for purchase some time after the 1st of the year. thumb.gif

Cool news David. Is there any prefered size ratio or format, portrait or landscape? I would assume extra long panos would be hard to fit onto the page of a book?

From my experiences with Blurb so far that sort of thing doesn't matter. Extra long panos will, of course, be smaller in the final product due to the fact that the page is only so big, so it's either squish small or crop ends off. But the nice thing is that the slurp program gives LOTS of options as to how to fit them onto a page and you can be sure that the utmost consideration will be taken to showcase each shot so that it looks its best. :D

Just to be really clear on this, the book is not being published by SmugMug or Blurb, it's being published by the Dgrin Community as a way to celebrate a fun, inspirational and educational event. Blurb is offering a discount to SmugMug peeps, but the book is by you and for you.

It'll be a great keepsake of the trip. wings.gif

I'm really shocked and surprised that many of you think we want to make money on this.

TO BE CLEAR: Smuggy wants no part of making any profit on you, your photos of Glacier, from this book.

It's just a fun idea for those who went on the trip. I'm looking forward to my copy thumb.gif

Well, as one (maybe the only one) that decided to opt out of the book, I'll try
    to explain why.

I was one of the first to add my two shots to the gallery. After about a month,
it was announced that "We" (at that time I had no idea who "We" were)
were going to make a book with the shots.
Nothing was said how many books were being made, or if our shots would
be used in other ways. (ie promotions, whatnot)

The email that David sent was very vague, at one point it says "if you want
to opt out just say so.", then the next line in the email says "if you have a
problem with us using your images say so."
If I opt out of the book, what other ways of using them are we talking about?
What am I giving you (we, them, us) the right to use the shots for?

Am I just paranoid? Maybe. Lets just say at 49 years old, I've been stepped
on a few times in my life. I'm a little more careful now.

If you would be willing to do something for me (to end my paranoia),
Send me (others) an email saying that my (our) shots would be used only to create
XXX number of books. Have someone with the authority (Andy, Baldy, whoever)
to electronically sign it, and I'm back in. (but I want the cover)mwink.gifmwink.gifmwink.gif (just kidding)

Now that I am the most hated man on the dgrin forums, and I'm sure some
will think that I'm an ungrateful S.O.B., I'm really not. I enjoyed the trip,
loved talking to the new folks, and the folks from the year before.
I even like the idea of the book, I just like to have my bases covered.

Hopefully that doesn't make me the bad guy.

P.S. Just how large (in inches) is the book going to be?
The largest shots on my site are 1200 x 800, how large are they going to be printed?
I guess I just ask to many questions.ne_nau.gif

Hi Dave, don't worry and I'm glad this issue is being raised because you bring up good points. As this is the maiden voyage of the Dgrin/SM/Blurb community project it's great that these questions are being raised sooner than later. I think it's more than fair for all of us as photographers to make sure our bases are covered and our artwork is protected. :D

I will let Andy or Markham address the legal stuffs but I can tell you that we'll end up going with the standard landscape book format. The optimal sizes for the very largest (full bleed) containers in the book layouts are ~2888 pixels on the longest side but if the photos that you submit are smaller than that then there are many many ways to get them in at lower resolution, too.

For information purposes, for design reasons I won't be making every photo a full-bleed page but the max possible in the landscape format book is 8.2 inches by 9.6 inches.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks Schmoo.

I know Kate wants to get a couple of shots up, she just hasn't decided which ones yet.
OK, I (we) haven't gone through all of her shots yet. How was I to know that
she was going to be trigger happy? She hasn't taken 200 pictures in the last
    2 years, on this trip, 1900. ne_nau.gif

I think that the book is for the people who went on the trip. Who else is gonna buy it? I doubt anyone. Certainly there's no profit on the book. It was just a fun idea, and I think you misunderstood. Or we could have explained better. Sure your concerns are valid, Dave, but nobody's trying to make a buck from you or your images here.

Yes, but really we were just thinking about putting the book together after the first of the year. The deadline's not set in stone, but more of a goal to work towards. Let us know what you need! This book is by the community, and for the community. A deadline shouldn't stand in the way of everyone participating!
