so am I still allowed to post in here now that I don't have a car anymore?

You don't have a car any more???? Well, show some company loyalty and get a Roush Mustang Blackjack (not only is it fast in a straightline, but it can actually handle - unlike every other Mustang).

That'd be fun, but I'm moving to Oz in 3 months, so I took a good deal on the car when I had one. I can just ride the bike(s) now.

I finished my phd (officially) a couple weeks ago and I'll be doing a post-doc at the Univ of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. I start on August 1. :D

I didn't really make a big public deal about the post-doc move thing yet. I just firmed up the start date recently. But its been in the works for a while. I close on our house at the end of June, and I've been getting rid of stuff like mad. We are, however, taking a long motorcycle road trip, so rather than sit on the car, I traded it for a new bike. :D (and I'm selling the old one privately - to preempt the question: selling cars privately in MA is a pain, and I have a much bigger network of bike friends, selling bikes is easier).

Here she is, with the Fast in the background. out with the old in with the new:

Well, at least you got a proper means of transportation, i.e. a German one. Though I can't say I understand it when BMW bikes are no cheaper than many used cars, and a good car can brake and turn quicker.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand why a BMW bike, I just kinda don't get the bike part once I learned that a car can brake and turn quicker.

Erik, did you get the BMW bags or are you going a different route?
Better yet, can you take it with you to OZ?

Any any case, congrats on the new, very sweet, ride!

    1) My Micatech's swap over from my 1150, just need different mounting blocks for the bike (going to see Bob in NH where they are made this week).

    2) I don't like the BMW/Touratech bags, mainly the mounting. Not a fan of a cage on the back of the bike when dismounted. And they are priced beyond belief!

    3) Oz, still don't think so. Apparently UQ has an importer for incoming researchers stuff, but I'm not holding my breath.

One of the motivators on this trade was MrsIt - the 1150GS adventure saddle is a torture device for the passenger. Also the windscreen is worlds better, better wind protection all around. The 1200 is a better long distance bike, which we'll want for our July ramble around the country via MOA.
    :D

Also, it was a bit of a lark. We went for a saturday ride, and stopped by the shop for a test-ride for the heck of it. When they made the obvious sales pitch, I said, "sure I want one, will you take a VW?" When they said yes and showed me how much they'd give me for it, it was a no brainer. Selling cars is hard (if I had sold the car privately, it would have fetched maybe a few hundred bucks more, with A LOT more headache), selling an R1200GS adventure will be no problem - they're still in very high demand.

Around here, 1200's are starting to hit the used marked with higher
frequency. Saw one last weekend for a song. '06 with 1800 miles (yes,
    1800).

By the time you're done with it, it'll just be broken in :D

Best of luck getting it into the country.

They've been in EU for a while. I was also really excited about these when I first read about them, but they've been getting lots of disappointing press. Lot of hype, great idea, but in practice, they seem to fall short. Basically, lot of weight, lot of technology = less than impressive performance, only slightly better efficiency.

Jury is still out on twincharger.

All potential kombi buyers are to first register with their nearest fire station.

Nah, just talkin about rally cars. That R36 looks like a natural WRX STi slayer.

And anyway, I have my priorities: I'll need a BMW motorbike first, then see how many coins are leftover for 4-wheel transport :D

I'll keep an eye out find you a nice one. I really like these older airheads but once you are used to the newer models its a bit of a power/handling drop. But if its about handling & power ..we would buy jap.

Mate of mine went off a bridge on his '99 1100 GS a while back and it only had a little bit of damage (mirror, foot peg etc) but insurance wrote it off as it completely submerged in 6 feet of fresh water. The insurance sold it at action for something like $6k. That would have been a good buy. Bit of fresh water wont hurt them too much..i still see it riding about here.

haha yeah. It's running real rough due to the open headers and air flow meter from the old engine. It's at the exhaust shop right now and I need a $5 part from the dealer to make the air flow meter work right.

Then I need to get these darn snow tires off!
