The Dark Sky: Astrophotography
I spent 8 months in Africa last year and was able to get out under the night skies a few times. Here are some favourites... Sleeping Under Galaxies Before arriving in Zambia I had envisioned a photo similar to this one so when I found this village I was rather excited. For this photo I had to get my camera as low as… -
Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony
This past Wednesday marked the 70th Anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The American Airpower Museum on Long Island once again hosted a memorial ceremony. In a tradition began in 1970, a bouquet of roses, one for each year since the attack, are blessed with water taken from near the USS Arizona, and then are… -
Not really into portraits........
...... but I shot a few 'by accident' this weekend and wanted to share some 'people shots' with you. Comments welcome :) : This gentleman is 93 years old and was telling about his experience as a fighter pilot over the Pacific, back in 1944. He came all the way from Australia to attend the Battle of Britain memorial… -

Re: Photoshop save for web color shift
It can but there's no guarantee. Now things get interesting when I view my Flash galleries on a wide gamut display (93% of Adobe RGB (1998)). FireFox and Safari match. This probably indicates that the upload from LR doesn't contain a profile. They don't match LR there's a difference in saturation but its not a lot (which I… -
Re: Canon 7D vs 60D for sports
It is my understanding that the Canon 7D is never worse at autofocus than a Canon 60D, but it is often much better. In lower light the speed of autofocus acquisition slows down for the 7D, and that appears to be by design and to reduce autofocus (AF) error. There is even a vague mention of the AF slowdown in the 7D User… -
Re: Matching Blogger to Use With Smugmug
Ouch, my brains hurts and my eyes are sore... I spent some time today editing my HTML code located in the template of my Blogger account. Thankfully I'd tried it before, so a lot of the legacy Smugstuff was in their to be modified. I have things looking close to where I can accept them. I've just two issues I can't for the… -
DSS 93: New to me
I have had to completely rebuild and reinvent my life this year. I got rid of almost everything I own to just start over. Thanks goodness. It's been a hell of a ride to boot! One of the things I did was start taking photography seriously. But I found that shooting digital was a little too fast paced for me, so I decided to… -
Re: Canon 50mm f/1.2L
All the math is theory--I'd expect actual lenses not to have aperture settings that are so precise. Does f/1.4 mean f/1.400? I doubt it--it could be f/1.41 or f/1.39 or anything else for that matter. Only the lens manufacturer knows for sure (and then there are manufacturing tolerances as well!) Then of course there's the… -
Re: Canon 7d Burst Problems
The things that can affect Canon burst speed are: * Shutter speed, longer shutter speeds result in a slower burst rate. * High-ISO noise reduction, at the strong noise reduction setting it has a noticeable effect on the burst rate. * I think that the 7D has the ability to detect light flicker and implement a strategy to…
