Three special folks...
I have the cutest grandparents on the planet. Last weekend I flew to Montana to shoot a wedding, and since I was there already, I snuck in a visit to my grandparents that live nearby. My visit began at my Gramma Betty's house. Anyone who knows this amazing woman wants to grow up to be just like her. (Including me.) Betty… -

Big Sur, Sequoia, Yosemite, Bodie, etc
Took a 4700 mile/10 day motorcycle trip from Texas to California & back. Got to see lots of cool (actually hot) places along the way. On a bike, that's about 10 - 11 hours riding per day, every day, so... I didn't have much time to really explore and take many decent shots. Most were limited to the "point & shoot" variety,… -
Black & White Conversion Theory
Black & White Conversion Theory Why is good B&W conversion so hard? Most people would like to be able to push a button or follow a simple recipe. Yet all good procedures for this require some manual interference, a fine tuning step of some sort. Why? Conversion to B&W is essentially ambiguous. What should happen to two… -
FS: Bags, books, filters, and more
I am simplifying my process and what I use and it's time to empty the storage boxes and the closet to pass on some excellent condition items. I've listed what I think are exceedingly fair prices. If you disagree, make me an offer. I'm interested in moving all of this stuff out of the storage boxes and out of my psyche, so… -
Re: Enhancing skin texture for beauty ads. how?
Yeah, it's coming. I'm trying to change jobs at the moment and it takes a lot of focus. The idea, however, is a lot like the use of plate blends to maximize a B/W conversion. But instead of simply altering the ratio of their blends, I've had some real success by pushing the natural contrast in the channels further with… -
Re: Fuzzy Portraits
In both images you are shooting in Auto Exposure, Shutter Priority mode, which forces the camera to fix the shutter speed and choose an acceptable ISO and aperture combination to complete the exposure calculation. You may be making this choice consciously - shooting at 1/160 sec - or that choice may be somewhat arbitrary.… -
Re: Upcoming Lightbox improvements (2019 edition)
I guess what is puzzling me is that emphasis on enjoying the full impact of the image, and not wanting to spoil that at all, but then taking up a third of the space (sometimes) with the info pane to see it. I don't want to lose all that space to see the caption. I did a quick test in debug mode where I set up a vertical… -
Re: Using Strobes indoor
I'd say it depends on a number of things... - Reception location, In NW Indiana, when I was shooting weddings.. well, there are a lot, scratch that, EVERY location looks nice till dinner starts, then they all but kill the lights. - Camera, When I first started shooting I was having trouble with anything, then again I…
