My fairly recent Macbook pro (2.2ghz core 2 duo, ATI Radeon X1600, 3gb ram) is very jumpy and stuttery, only playing the clips at 22 - 24 fps (quicktime will tell you in the movie inspector).
Anyone know of any tricks to speed it up? I'd hate to go back to the days of doing offline edits with lowres proxys.
Curiously my 3.2 GHz Dell XPS desktop does not come close to real time but my 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro plays it fine. I think the difference is that the MacBook has a more recent video card which likely supports H.264 decoding. I'll bet that if I upgrade the video card in my desktop machine and use a decoder which takes advantage of it, I'll have no trouble playing it back.
Both the actual film and the behind the scenes piece played much better as long as I wasn't much more than 1/2 thru the download.
I kept having to back up on the 'Behind' piece due to stutter or freezing. On my 3 year old Optiplex with 2GB RAM, either bottom of rung or integrated Intel v-card, so nothing special.
So when I did the actual film I downloaded the whole thing and then played it. No problem.

Oh my good, this keeps looking better and better by the minute ...

This is helping the self-flagellation needed to muster the savings of $3000 by the end of November, in the midst of starting a 401K, 2x 529s and everything else. I hope the auto ISO at least makes up for some of it.
Now I'm going to have to save up for it big time, because this is *the* camera I want, I've been lusting for a full frame for a long while and this one, with the added 10MP sRAW and all the other ridiculously excellent features is just the thing the doctor ordered
"La, deee, daaa, while I'm shooting a totally cool video, I think I'll just snap a gorgeous picture...oh, okay, back to cool video..."
Isn't anybody as awestruck as I am that one of our highly admired photographers can just pop out some totally cool video shots with a mere smidgen of prep and his normal focused hard work ethic...
Vincent really does have a keen eye and wonderfully creative spirit. Kudos to him and we get to sit back with popcorn and watch. AAAAAAnd he is so nice to blog about it so we can share the experience with him.
There are many feature film directors that started out as photographers, a good eye isn't stuck in one medium. My favourite example is Stanley Kubrick who used to shoot for Look Magazine
Truth be told, I am more amazed by the processing and storage power than the actual sensor itself. The sensor is amazing but the rest of the signal path also have me dropping my jaw
* We posted full HD versions of both Reverie and the behind-the-scenes footage for the world to see, crossing our fingers that our bandwidth bill wouldn’t be more than we could bear.
* Our customers went bananas. Awesome! They’re thrilled we’re interested in this stuff, because they’re interested in this stuff. Ok, great, so maybe this bandwidth bill will pay of in goodwill.
* The press went bananas - both mainstream and online. Awesome! They’re gaga over the user response and the remarkable camera.
* We got busy (and I personally got busy) telling everyone, press and non alike, who called, emailed, tweeted, blogged, etc that the Canon 5D MkII is a game-changing camera the likes of which we haven’t seen before.
* Canon asked Vincent to ask us to take Reverie down.
SAY WHAT?!
Canon asked Vincent to ask us to take Reverie down.
And:
But look at it from my point of view. I was risking an awful lot of money on bandwidth (I doubt it would have topped 6 figures, but easily could have been in the 5s) because I’m a camera geek and I love this stuff.
And hahaha, check out Canon's official page for hosting the low-res version of Vincent's video today (10/03/2008):
DUE TO HIGH DEMAND OF VIDEO CLIPS WE HAVE EXCEEDED OUR DOWNLOAD CAPACITY.
WE ARE NOW INVESTIGATING ALTERNATIVE HOSTING METHODS.
Doh! Canon, I have a suggestion... nah, nevermind. :-}

Mine plays better in full screen mode, but still choppy, ah well.
