Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge #24

Welcome to Round #24 of the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenges. This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from Monday, April 20, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5) to Monday, May 4, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5).

The topic ready for your interpretation: Emulation Image

Study a photograph from a photographer whose work you admire and attempt to emulate it. The intent is not to make a perfect copy of another’s work, but to truly study their style and why it makes it what it is, then attempt an image that is reminiscent of their work.

Your Judges:
AaronNelson (Winner of DSS Round #22)
pemmett (Guest Judge)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your entry is to be submitted directly into a Smugmug gallery. It's pretty simple, just go to the gallery link below, and follow the upload instructions at the top of the page: Remember, the basics stay the same: 1 entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during this contest period. Do not use a minimal save method (such as "save for web"), and your exif will be embedded in your image, no worries!

To avoid disqualification, read, in full, the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge Rules, there have been some slight modifications.

Okay, my first beg/plead: we stipulate in the rules that captions should follow the "username - title" format. Please use that format, including the hyphen. No tildes, no em dashes, no arrows. It might look cute, but it adds work for me, especially when more folks start doing it. Help me keep the pace snappy by using the beloved hyphen. iloveyou.gif

How are we to inform the judges/voters what photographer and/or picture we are emulating?headscratch.gif

wow! this is the one that I wish I had a month to work on! My mind is blank and I can't think of anyone that I could even begin to emulate and do justice to.

does it have to be a really famous photographer that everyone knows or can it be a basically local photographer that only I know but I admire so much?

That isn't a requirement, which is why it wasn't included in the description. mwink.gif You're welcome to do so, if you like, in the way you name the JPEG or add a keyword, but the bigger hope is that folks will spend a little time studying others' work and learn something new along the way. thumb.gif

It can be either, certainly. If it's a local unknown, I'd hope you would post a link to his or her work in a feedback thread to help others discover some new, inspiring work! But, of course, this is not a requirement. Just a nice way to pay homage. :D

Emulate~ to try to equal or excel; imitate with effort to equal or surpass: "to emulate one's father as a concert violinist."
to rival with some degree of sucess...

So we are not necessarily are to "copy" the work....but make it our own and improve on the work to make it better? How is that judged without comparison?

I'm hoping the entries will be beyond compare. mwink.gif Seriously, though, I'm not going to ask judges to compare eighty entries to eighty other photos—it's too time-consuming and truly defeats the purpose of this challenge (and all our challenges), which is to learn something new and grow as a result.

If participants would like to include the emulated photographer's name somehow with their entry, y'all are welcome to. Again, it is not a requirement and will not affect the judging.

Let's not lose focus of what this theme's goal is: for everyone to discover or learn a little more about others' work and see how it could influence your own.

Personally, one photographer whose work greatly disturbed me once heavily influenced a number of my entries here. I learned by studying his photos and emulating his style while incorporating it into my own. Who it was wasn't important. What I got out of it was. thumb.gif

Also (and I mention this simply because it came up in another forum when I posted a copyright image) presumably we should LINK to any other photogs' examples rather than embed them?

rolleyes1.gif Did the summary include "straight out of camera?" No? Then there's no limit on processing techniques. :D You're free to process (or not) however you choose.

We follow the same rule on this forum: only post images that are yours. Link to images that aren't. thumb.gif

And again, just to be clear, including a link to the work being emulated is not a requirement. deal.gif

Sorry, I was just feeling snarky, given how, shall we say, overexposed a certain photographer's portraiture techniques have become. I'll shut up now. :D

Aaron, I spent most of last night trying to calm my nerves, breathing very deeply and keeping my eyes closed. Every now and again I opened them to see if the theme had changed for this challenge - but after 24 hours it's still the same!

Now back to the deep breathing techniques...

Oh, didn't I mention? To make sure you're qualified to judge, both of you will have to identify the photographers being emulated in each image without any reference material before being allowed to submit your top ten. naughty.gif

Kidding aside, feel free to pester me with questions if you have them. I have faith in you both. thumb.gif

naked man, rings of fire, and a hedgehog all in one photograph has yet to be done. but i have high hope in DSS #24 producing such a thing.

however, smell-o-vision is not recommended for this feature photograph:D

rolleyes1.gifroflrolleyes1.gifMy hedgehog died last year after seeing me run naked through hoops of fire once too many times.

I'm now working on a photo shoot involving a Norwegian Blue Parrot, lying naked in an ant's nest and covering myself head to toe with maple syrup.iloveyou.gif

    Georgia O'Keeffe Emulation
Actually when I saw the challenge I immediately thought about a photo I took of a banana tree flower, which many people have commented that this flower photograph reminded them of the erotic flower photos from Georgia O'Keeffe - which you can see at http://www.okeeffemuseum.org
    218970614_srVs9-M-3.jpg

All I can add is that it is one of my most viewed photos on my smugmug and Flickr accounts.
