I have no idea. There's an awful lot going on in that building at night for every floor to be lit up like that. I'm guessing that he had a camera in a stationary location and took many photos over an extended period of time which be blended into one.
I enjoy studying the activity on each floor of the building.
In my opinion, yes, it is a composite image and it reminds me of a painting which author I completely forgot
( I think he was German - expressionist) representing several floors, each with several (transparent) rooms,
like you were able to see trough the walls, and in each room something was happening - one guy was even hanging himself...
- it also reminds me somehow of Pieter Bruegel - showing lots of different people doing different things in their quotidian life.
I find that image (photo) very interesting and captivating.
Somehow, it is a similar idea in the supermarket photo... lots of (organized) rows and columns of
different things but, I have to think about my comments on it - (tomorrow)
I'm curious about that shot, Linda. Is it a real building, designed in such a way that you see that much into the building? If it's composite/fabricated in some way, then yes he created a cool photograph. Otherwise what I see is someone taking a shot of an architect's awesome building.
I tried to find out more about the photograph titled
May Day V (2006)
and all I could find is that Andreas Gursky is well known for digitally manipulating is images and one quote says this:
"Andreas Gursky, the highest priced living photographer, has been piecing together digital slices with highly profitable motivation for years."
So I am guessing that May Day V is most likely partly done with that type of technique aka "digital slices".
Either way - is it just a cool building? Is that flower in your backyard just a cool flower? Is that Model that a makeup artist and hairdresser put together for the shoot, just a beautiful woman? or.... Is the resulting image a fine tuned conglomeration of things that as a whole makes us step back and take a look... and maybe even think about what it means, it purpose, it's voice?
One of my best experiences as an artist was hearing a couple comment on one of my images that was in a local gallery as I stood by anonymously. The couple absolutely hated the image and they voiced it quite readily that it was in very bad taste. Why was this the best experience for me? Because out of the whole gallery they stopped and looked at it the longest and they had an emotional reaction. Like or hate, my goal of sending a message and instilling an emotional reaction, had been achieved.
Gursky's work may not be revolutionary or astounding, (I like it a lot), but his work sure brings a lot of discussion both positive and negative, I'm betting he is happy about both. A few million for an image doesn't hurt either

That would definitely soften the blow of any negative comments.
All good points, Sean. And I must say, I think if I'd been in your position, my ego would have been much more fragile. Having read what you've said now though, if I ever am in that position, I will remember your words.
You could submit anything you want to this contest! Just say it represents the Def Leppard song "Photograph".

@ forbid you ask for any c&c, lest anyone mistake your entry for art and not photography...:D
OK, so I'm over it, I promise....
The pic of the building, I tend to agree with Emily, as it's a pic of a building.. I'll add that almost really a well lit polly-pocket dressed up to look like something real..
Fact is, as we all know who've hung around here long enough, the contests are judged subjectively, and just the selection of judges guides that subjectivity, heck, even if the same judges came back to it a day later, their opinions might change.. That's just the nature of the beast that we all have to accept in this place..
Key is take your concept and make something out of it for you, and not get caught up in the judging.. Trying to win never gets you there.. The joy of taking the picture does.. My highest placed image was one of my most rewarding days of photography, that little girl jump-roping in the park in Shanghai..
me too,... i even went and signed up for one of those english classes...
but, ended up quitting...
right off the bat they presented capital letters to me and my brain exploded with overload... i started cry'in so i just left....

I hope your "brian" feels better soon...what a terrible thing to have happen!
Well, I thought I had my shot and had been planning on submitting it soon enough (even had the song picked out. One that actually has lyrics) until a time-continuum rip occurred in parts of DGrin and now the image might not be retrievable.
I'm going to have to go check that my grandparents still existed.

Haha! That sucks...still, you have 4 full days left.

Well, the image still exists, but the context for it as an entry for it to the challenge, um, might be challenging. Let's just say it's the subject of an active thread caught in a DGrin change. In a positive, if strange, way.
I might submit it anyway under an alternative title.
Which famous photographer caused so much controversy, that his artwork had been removed from a gallery due to a huge "obscenity vs. art" debate in 1989?
