I will be signing up for Facebook later this evening. !!!!
I guess it is about time that I stop swimming against the current.
Don't jump into it without some research, especially about all the types of pages, etc. I have a personal page, and a "Fan page", which I've listed under the category "Artist" (it's mostly to share my photography). However, I made a major mistake, and now there's almost nothing I can do about it unless FB changes. Problem: On personal pages, you can change your name at some point if you want to. However, on Fan-pages (business pages), you can not ever change the name of it. The only way to change it is to completely scrap your page and start from scratch with a new name. Here was my mistake: My personal page is named "Anna Lisa Yoder", and so is my Fan-page! I didn't know this would be a problem, and I can't explain to you all the reasons it's a problem until you're used to how FB works. Just trust me, it's given me all kinds of trouble. I've had a lot of problems with outside content not knowing where to post itself, because I have the same log-in for both. I also administer DayBreak Folk, which is my music group's page. Sometimes stuff even posts on my Artist page rather than on my DayBreak Folk page. When I "favorite" another page, FB does not know which entity is "favoriting" the page.... yes, sometimes FB gives me a choice. Sometimes it doesn't. If it asks me whether "Anna Lisa Yoder" wants to favorite something, I don't know which one it means! (me, or me the artist!) I wish I'd have maybe used WinsomeWorks for my biz page, but my problem with that initially is that most of my friends wouldn't have known to look me up that way.
So here's my advice: Use a completely different log-in for your biz page (Fan-page) than you use for your personal page. Use a different email address, etc.... whatever it takes. Then you shouldn't have this differentiation problem. It doesn't look like they're going to fix their code anytime soon. So far, they don't even seem to grasp the problem. Also, if you put an email address on your biz page, expect to get tons of junk-mail to that address. If there's a way to make it show only to fans of the page, that might help. My email address on my personal page is only visible to my friends, and I don't have a problem with junk-mail to that email address. Also, if you set up a biz page, wait til you're familiar with FB through using a personal page. Or just go slowly with the biz page while you see how it works. Lastly, don't use the same exact name on your biz page. Even if I had created the name "Anna Lisa Yoder - Artist" right from the beginning, I wouldn't have so much trouble with differentiating. Yeah, it says "Artist" in the description or category, but that's not enough, because that description doesn't show up all the time, such as when you post photos. Even my friends can't tell who's posting, me or my fan-page, except by my profile pic! Ok, enough advice-- it has its rewards, but take it a step at a time & good luck!
^^
the last part of advice will make it really uncomfortable to use..
but again, I am an avid Facebook user, and flip between my fan pages and my own profile constantly.
I don't think you CAN make a separate login for a fan page. You have to have a personal profile first in order to make a fan page. You login with your personal profile login at all times.
Problem: On personal pages, you can change your name at some point if you want to. However, on Fan-pages (business pages), you can not ever change the name of it. The only way to change it is to completely scrap your page and start from scratch with a new name.
I can see how this is a problem - I am just getting started with using FB for business, and trying to get to grips with all the issues involved.
However, I understood that once you had 25 'likes' for your business page - you could then choose any name you liked for it (or is this the stage where you "made your mistake" ?).

Frank, you're confusing this with the URL name. That's different. I think few people even notice that. (although when I chose a URL, I thought I was choosing it for my personal page & not my artist page. Therefore I goofed up there too). I think we're allowed to change that URL name once, so I probably will, but have to be sure I'm changing it to what I really want for my art page. But no, I'm talking about the name that shows up whenever you post something or comment on something. That name, for me, is the same-- "Anna Lisa Yoder" whether I post photos on my artist page, or whether I post something on my personal page. So people don't know which page is posting except if they recall what profile pic I use, or if they click on the post.
Sounds like if you wait a few days, Smuggie is going to have it installed for us if you want it, so we should hold off on installing it personally perhaps. Look back at the release notes (& Andy's posts in this thread) for the details.

Are you sure about that? I'm not arguing, because I'm not sure, but I thought there were businesses that had no admins who have their own personal page. I do know that I added my spouse as an admin to our DayBreak Folk page, and I don't think he ever has the issues I have with the posts. But I can't begin to wrap my mind around why that would be the case.

OK - I think I understand. Luckily I choose my business page name correctly then (phew !). When I get 25 'likes' I will use the same URL name as my business page name. These are different from my personal page. In experimenting, I already have 1 deleted business page and 1 dormant one.
It's VERY unclear how to do this properly when you're getting started, and the FB information is very confusing until you've actually tried it out. The big issue for me (and for you, I think)is that the names can't be changed later - once you realise what you should have done.

Hmm - why not just add yourself as an admin then - with the name you want to use. Would this be a workaround ?

If the page is a community page, not the business, you don't have to have an admin.
Otherwise, yes, it should be linked to a name. AFAIK.
Twitter also just came out with their own Tweet button today as well (it used to be through a 3rd party). It even shortens the URL for you automatically using their own "t.co" linking. I'd also recommend Smuggie to get that in there as well.

Do you mean a "tweet" button would show up on a gallery or category, then if someone liked it, they'd click the "tweet" button & it would show up in their Twitter feed? I've never used Twitter & what I saw of it bored me to tears, but I'd still like to understand how the button would work!

Yes, pretty much. A lot of companies, businesses, photogs, etc have their own Twitter page as well with their own "followers". So imagine that you or someone else "Re-Tweets" some of your galleries for all of their followers, yours etc to see. Its a major form of commerce for a lot of businesses.

^Cool. Any word if its gonna be easier to share in the iPhone apps or the mobile interface if we upload stuff on the go? Or will we still have to navigate through the "full" site to do this??
Now, that the feature is there.. is there a way for us to track who had liked our images?
That's the very first thing I wanted too when I saw this feature. Since this is generic FB Like, I don't think there is any way to do it, but I'd love to hear differently if there is.
If we could do some sort of integration with our own FB profile, I'm thinking, it could deliver those notifications.. Waiting to hear on that.
Number of likes would be helpful, too.
Next step, then, would be to integrate SM with FB fan pages..
Thanks so much for the new functionality! However, I'm wondering why it doesn't show the picture along with the caption in my feed? Having it just show the caption with no other supporting information is going to make it tough to get follow backs to my site. Could you possibly show a thumbnail and maybe the site title before the caption? Perhaps something like:
Thumbnail -> Site Title -> Gallery -> first few words of caption
Just throwing out some ideas.
Update: Ok, maybe I'm seeing it differently because I'm viewing my own profile. I've seen another person "like" one of their images, and it came up in the format of:

We send the thumbnail - FB controls when it shows the photo (get more likes and it appears)

You saying there can be thousands of photos "liked" on a site but a single
photo has to be liked a bunch before the thumb shows? Or is the blind "liked"
link on the Facebook page have to be liked a lot?

Andy, I think there could be some bugs with this integration. I'm seeing some very inconsistent behavior, including:
* Showing only the caption text with no "on" link
* Showing a very strange smugmug/services link rather than a caption or gallery title
* the "on" link showing the correct text, but taking the user to the main sm page
Would it be helpful if I submitting a bug report somewhere?
Update: Ok, so the gallery title is shown because that particular photo has no caption. So, that is not an issue at all.
I'm seeing a problem in this area as well - if someone clicks on a photo in the "Popular Photos" section on my home page, the FB & Twitter buttons appear, irrespective of the original gallery setting. If you "Like" the photo, the link sent to FB unsurprisingly fails.
I suspect that these buttons shouldn't appear in the first place if the original gallery doesn't have sharing settings enabled (and hopefully this is fairly easy for you to fix!)

IMO, smart pros that sell are really immersing themselves in Facebook, building pro fan pages there, and using it as a marketing tool.

Can someone tell me where I can find the code and instructions for putting the Facebook "like" button on my smugmug website?
Thanks
