OK I unveiled. It was another learning curve, after the legacy site but I think Smug Mug have done a great job. Not yet perfect but getting there!

I love the modern interface and when I look back I can realize how dated the legacy site had become.

The only customizations I’ve used are:
    1) Right click protection.
    2) Gallery, Folder & Page icons.
    3) HTML inserts.

    All constructive criticism is welcome.mwink.gif

Very nice. What are the Gallery, Folder and Page icons? I looked but did not notice.

Clicking your homepage panoramic image to About page is an excellent idea. I will have to check that.

My turn to perform the irrevocable act. I'm unveiled at jtringl.smugmug.com

This is primarily a sharing site for family and friends plus a place for me to view my own collection, but anyone who wanders in is welcome. My "Tools" page has a some discussion of site construction. I had fun building this and interacting in these forums.

    Comments welcome.

    Nice, Jim.

You may want to remove the smugmug banner from the top though.

I did wonder in and enjoyed the visit very much Jim. I like your site and the photography is outstanding.

I too use my site for the same reasons as you and find Smugmug to be the perfect system for me the past 9-yrs..

I've no critique for you except to say it plays well and I like your format.

    Hi all,

Here is my New SM site: http://www.magicaloceans.com

Basically, I wanted to reproduce Legacy and I must say I found it very easy. The biggest change from the old SM is the full-page slideshow on the homepage.

There is one thing I am still missing in the new SM - the ”Map this!” option for any gallery (and not only for ”Recent” or ”Popular”).
So, for now I am not happy with the map content and will modify it as soon as the solution is delivered. And it was already promised…http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=236806

Any constructive criticism is more than welcome.

    Take care,

Isak, I like your site, your underwater images are nothing short of stunning.

What I noticed about your homepage is that either your menu box (top right) is too small, or your text is too large. Hence the "Contact" moves onto a second line.

My personal opinion would be to reduce the size of the text, and let the photos do all the talking. It will look nice.

Also for your "Portfolio", I'd also think about changing the layout of the page. The standard smugmug look has the thumbnails with a small photo to the right. But if these are your best pieces of work, you want to really let them stand out and maximise their size. I am sure one of the other smugmug options would really work well.

I haven't noticed this problem on any of the monitors I am using. Thank you for letting me know.
I have just changed the split Logo/Menu from 50/50 to 30/70 (without changing the size of the text).
    Hopefully it looks better now...

My logic was precisely to remain consistent throughout the site.
But you may have the point and I will give this idea a serious consideration.
I'm curious what the others think...

Would everyone take a look and give me things I can fix on my site. Thanks.

I would turn the breadcrumb off on your pricing page and I would have your social links open in a new window so that it doesn't navigate away from your page.

Also, on your contact page, NC should be on the same line as Huntersville and I would put the phone # on a separate line. Right now it looks like your phone # is your email address.

    Here's mine. www.einatix.com

At first I had a slideshow on the home page, but since you can't click on photos to go to their galleries (as was possible in old SM), I didn't see the point of keeping it. Instead, I have a selection of best photos.

One of the things that I feel are important, is as few clicks as possible to reach the photos. Thus, the hierarchy is rather flat: Folders >> Galleries. No sub folders or sub-sub folders.
Another thing was to have the nave bar, with links to all galleries, on all pages.

I used a few CSS codes, and I’m thankful for all those who contributed, both with the codes and with other tips and suggestions.

What I don’t like but I have given up on, is the compatibility to various screens. I f I use “stretchy”, it looks awful, as the banner doesn’t stretch. If I’d change the banner to a wider one, then I lose the photo’s proportions. Now that I’ve set the layout to a fixed size, I’m afraid it doesn’t’ fit smaller (mobile) screens. There’s just no end to this.

    My customization efforts
I have a Basic Membership, so I can only change the theme and not the layouts of my folders. So this is what I did to work around the lack of flexibility. Seeing that my featured photos could only be squares and much my long gallery names were truncated, never mind people missing and parts of people missing, I had to make my featured photos square. They had to include enough information to make specific galleries easy to find. I am the main volunteer photographer for my church and I have to be able to share my photos with lots and lots of people. I think I succeeded and things look pretty good on mobile devices as well.

Well, I'm still figuring things out but I'm pretty much done: www.gd-photos.com

I'm still trying to decide on the best way to view a portfolio though. Criticism welcomed:
1 - Journal, you scroll down to see more pictures: http://www.gd-photos.com/Portfolio/Landscape
2 - Slideshow, pictures change slowly, controllable: http://www.gd-photos.com/Portfolio-2/Landscapes
3 - Random grid, pictures are scattered, pictures stretch when you pull the window, click on the picture to see larger: http://www.gd-photos.com/Portfolio-2/Landscape

Jeff, You have no idea how happy that site makes me. For one, you were thinking outside the box and created something beautiful! Also, I love that you showcase the business and services first and the photography and video second. Bravo! I sent it off to the entire company I was so impressed. thumb.gif

    Thanks!

Is there any way I can find out how to get slideshows in a large size as so well illustrated by this site:

    http://www.jarboedoggart.com/Gallery/Places

I notice you particularly liked this one: Boneheads.smugmug.com

That would be great but looks much more complex. I am limited to what can be done through the new Smugmug - which I love - because I have no coding skills.

My site is almost ready but it really suffers because I can't figure out how to get a large size slideshow. http://bill-wilson.smugmug.com/

Beautiful images. It makes me want to be able to travel to such beautiful places.
Journal view is my favorite of the three. Not a fan of slideshow I suppose because I prefer to control it myself. The third one - collage landscape used I suppose - when I click on image I feel stuck there - perhaps use of breadcumbs then a viewer could return to screen and select another image.

Your homepage is lovely and inviting but there are some problems beyond that. It may helpful to log out of smugmug and then navigate to your site so you can see what I mean:
    1. When I click on a link on a navbar, it does not really take me to anything. What I get to is a page that looks like it has a faded out background(?) image but no other photos.
    2. Get out of the thinking of legacy smugmug! Your about me page is an example of this. The content is fine, but unlike the legacy smugmug, you don't need to fake it by creating a gallery and then adding text to the gallery description. Instead, go to Organize>Create>Create Page.In the Title call it About Me and then click create. Now go to the Organizer and navigate your way to the page you just created. You may have to open up folders to find the page. Once you find the page (in the left panel), click on the page. You ill get something in the middle telling you to click to go to the page. Go to it. Now up on the top bar click customize> and you should see an option for page settings. Click it. Now add your photo and then a text box with your about me text. Then change the link on the about navbar to point to this page or delete the one you made and create a new one; either way should give you the option to navigate to the page. That way you don't have to come up with code to get rid of the thing that says this gallery is empty!

    thanks for thatthumb.gif

I unveiled my site, but I can't get it to do what I want it to do.
Out of sheer frustration I just unveiled my new Smugmug site. It is definitely not a finished product, but I thought if I unveiled it I could solve some of my annoying problems. Well, the problems are still there. I wanted to feature galleries on the home page. Clicking on one of the images takes you to that gallery. That is what I want it to do. However, the browse page does not work. I wanted that page to show my folders, which I listed as image categories. Clicking on the image takes you to a blank page. Does anyone know what I did wrong. I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked. Thank you in advance for comments or solutions to my browse page problem.

I really liked your website. Your links under "services" went to a page not found (using Safari), but I'm sure that's because you're still working on those. Other than that, everything seemed to work fine.

I'm happy to see that your "browse" section works well. Mine doesn't work at all (takes you to a blank page). Perhaps it's because I renamed my "folders" to "image categories." In any event, it's really frustrating. I'm always so happy to see a new Smugmug website working the way it's supposed to work, like yours.

Just to let you know (after seeing your site something occurred to me). It was that I had renamed "folders" to "image categories." Changed it back to "folders" and it works fine. Funny, I thought that wouldn't make a difference somehow. Anyway, thank you (it was your site that helped me figure out what I was doing wrong.
