Id love to see a tutorial on this. Thanks

Some of you were interested in how I created a mask to allow only the water splash and foam to show outside of my OOB frame. Here is an attempt at explaining it.
    This is my original OOB.
    390911850_865a57f57c.jpg?v=0

Next we are going to click on the Channels Tab. (Assuming you are in RGB Mode) you should see an RGB combined Channel along with a Red, Green and Blue Channel.

If we compare these channels, we can see that the Red channel produces the most contrast between the white splash and foam of the water and the blue water itself. ( I will not go into detail of why this is so, other than Blue water contains little if no Red in it, therefore it is dark or black and white contains much red in it (as well as blue and green) therefore it is light. This is why we chose this particular channel to use as our mask.
    390911853_83e4825ce1.jpg?v=0
    Red
    390911847_6888c57948.jpg?v=0
    Green
    390911840_670d1078e1.jpg?v=0
    Blue

    1. First we are going to make a duplicate of our red channel to use as our eventual selection mask. Make sure that you have selected the Red Channel from the levels pane. Now right click on the red channel and select duplicate channel. You should now have a "red copy" channel. This is what we will create our selection mask from.
    390911854_04e7840607.jpg?v=0
Now this channel alone does not have enough contrast to make a good mask yet, so we are going to fix that using the levels command.

    2. Make sure "red copy" Channel is selected and then Select from the Menu Image->Adjustments->Levels...
    3. Now bring the black arrow(left) towards the center until you have turned the blue water to the level of black that you want without losing the splash and foam that you want.
    4. Now bring the white arrow(right) towards the center until you have made the foam pure white where you want the foam to show through. I like to leave a little room between the black and white arrows to allow for some gradual fading of what shows through and what doesn't.
    5. Now adjust the grey arrow(middle) to your preference where you still have a little texture in the foam. You should have something similar to below. Click OK and now we have a perfect selection mask.
    390913155_1f623b9490.jpg?v=0
    6. Click the RGB tab so you see the OOB in color again. Click back on the layers Tab and select the layer "mask" (click on it) that is linked to your original image (very important).
    7. Select from the Menu Selection->Load Selection... From the channel drop down menu, select the "red copy" as your selection mask. You should see something like this with the crawling ants as your selection that matches your mask that we created from the "red copy" channel.
    390911844_e6bad1e7c5.jpg?v=0
    8. Now select a big paint brush and make sure your foreground color is white and start painting over the water. You should see that the white foam is showing through everywhere that you paint.
"If this is not happening then you probably do not have the mask linked to the original image selected." ("hint: ctrl-H will toggle marching ants on and off in windows")
    390913158_68f5db15ff.jpg?v=0
    9. Now we want to make the foam also look like it is on top of the frame in places, so using the same selection we want to click on the mask linked to the white frame(very important). But now we want to change the paint brush to black and then paint over the frame where we want the splash to be on top of the frame.
    390913157_671e670920.jpg?v=0
Hopefully you have something like this when you are finished. This method can be used for other things that are hard to mask. You just need to pick the color channel that provides the best starting point.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make these screen shots and go into detail about making a mask and showing us how you got that water splashing done in your OOB shot, this is how I learn by picture, the words without the pictures don't make sense to me, I learn by seeing then reading and doing.

I have bookmarked this post so that I can refer back to it when I get a shot I'd like to try this out on.

Thank you again, your tutorial is very much appreciated clap.gifclap.gif

    Thanks Skippy and Serrator,
I'm 44, so I don't know what "rapt" meansne_nau.gif (Is it the same as stoked?headscratch.gif ). I didn't like cutting the foot off either, but it was cut off in the original picture, so no way of cloning that back in easily. (Feet are pretty ugly anyway:D ).

Dave your family OOB is great too, you did really well considering all the hair masking you had to deal with. Excellent.

-mbx777, outstanding masking and fun pic to use for your OOB. Nice frame warpage too!

-mercphoto, tremendous job...well done! I see you figured out the Windows to Mac translation. If I remember my Mac days the left click should just be the mouse button for Mac...they don't have a right mouse button or at least when I used to have one, but it's been a while??

The hardest part is the masking, which I'm not overly good at. I don't feel I get nice clean lines on my masks.

Bill, another nice job on your car OOB. As far as the extraction method masking, use a "harder" brush vesus a "soft" brush for hard edged items such as your car body and such. Also be sure to use the shift key when masking straight edged areas. Like for instance the car fender, just click on one end of the fender where it sticks out of the frame and then hold down the shift key, move the brush as far along the edge that is being masked so that when you click again the brush will mask out between those two clicks creating a perfectly straight mask line.

For hair/fur or other softer edged items use a softer brush accordingly.

Nice job Bill on both of these cars. If you are having trouble drawing the mask, with something with this sharp of color change edge like the car, the magic wand selection tool works very nice. It should be able to distinguish the car from the background easily and might be better than trying to draw the mask free hand. Select the car with the wand and if you don't get it all on the first click then Shift Click on the part of the car that didn't get selected. This should add to your selection until you have selected all you want and then inverse your selection and use that to paint your mask. I hope I didn't confuse.
