Oh also folks Im coming into Kalispell at about 1pm on Monday. Will anyone already be there? I was thinking of hanging out with anyone in the area. Otherwise I will just take a cab to the hotel and order delivery.
I'll be arriving in Kalispell on the 22nd and will probably be shooting around the West side of the park for a couple of days before heading to St Marys on Tuesday. Is anyone else planning the same?
Chris and I arrive at 3:35 in Kalispell, on the 24th, and I'm sure we'd be up for hanging around or whatever that afternoon/evening. We will have a rental car, so can provide transport, as needed.
Snow
Sweet! Looks like the mountains in Glacier have gotten an early dusting of snow. That will make for excellent pictures if it is still there when you all get there. The webcams looked very nice this morning:
What is it about rental car companies and me that just can't get along?
I had a car booked for 8am Friday the 21st of September. They screwed it up. No car. God willing, I will be able to find a rental this morning somewhere - anywhere! And then I should be set to go.
Someday, I should probably just buy a car and I won't have to deal with these people.
1 sleep to go.

My buddy Chris, who is coming on the shootout, has one of the Sigma's, but I can't remember which one. I'm sure he is bringing it. I'll find out and post tomorrow.
I shot it when I had the original Rebel (300D) and liked it, but I did have a shot or two where there was vignetting and lots of places I wanted to use it were light challenged, so, especially with the original 300D, it was challenging.
My CFO just upped the budget to "up to $1000"- fricken christmas in Septmeber over here. I need a wide angle, with a polarizer. I guess this means that I can afford the canon 10-20, but is it actually worth the price in relation to the three mentioned above?
Also, I have pretty much decided to leave the medium format at home.
However, I have a Pentacon 6 to Canon EOS adaptor, and I have an Orestegor 300mm and a Zeiss Jena 80mm that can be deadheaded on a Canon body. Anybody want to use these? I don't know if the focal lengths are good for this outing, but that Zeiss makes a very fine pic.
The Canon 10-22 is almost L-quality glass and construction, so it is easily worth the $675-700'ish prices you'll find.
The outer-most element juts out quite a bit, so room is very tight for any filters at all. And when zooming, the outer element group moves in or out - getting dangerously close to a filter. In fact, don't try anything other than the supplied lens cap or it might just come in contact with the glass. When I use my Hoya ultra-thin polarizer filter or ND's, I don't screw them on all the way. Realistic filter usage w/o vignetting begins at around 13/14mm.
Fun lens that 10-22. At 10mm, things get pretty funky.

I'm bringing my wonky radio-walkie-talkie thing, you know those $30 walkie-talkies with a '2 mile range', in case anybody else has one bring it so we can gab.

Now that sounds like a good time.
What's the reliability of those things? I mean, if you're nabbed by a bear, will you be able to call for help from the den?
Somebody please tell me B&H will be open on Sunday. At 11:30 it was all shuttered up. After an absolutely dreadful 2 hours at the chinese consulate, I was counting on a shiny new 10-22mm to restore my sanity.
I can't believe that I have to be minorly inconvenienced for the sake of 3,000 years of sacred tradition. Doesn't rampant consumerism mean anything to anyone anymore? Sheesh.

Hah,
In an open plain with a light northerly wind and standing on one foot I'd believe the 3mi claim, surrounded by mountains and 39 nerds with cameras I'd say 1mi, with my head in the maw of a bear it won't work cuz I'll be jamming it in the bear's eye. But thats why I'll be wearing Bear Bells and if those don't work I'm pretty tall and I bet I can outrun most of you; remember, you don't have to outrun the bear, you have to outrun the guy carrying too much gear.

Sorry Sam, I lost you when you said "39 nerds with cameras." Got a bit too excited, here.
Obviously I'm having trouble focusing at work this fine Friday afternoon.
So I take it you're not bringing the large format? :cry

Perish the thought, I'm _bringing_ a small pro shop worth of camera gear, what I take out on the trail day to day wil come to me after meditation each morning: 'Does a shutter make a sound if nobody is around to hear it?'.
To any of you who do not already know, yet still care (all one of you ), I had to cancel going to the Glacier Shootout, as I've used up all of my vacation and good will at work making trips out to see my parents as my father battles cancer.
Have a great time, all you lucky dogs, and make sure you post lots of snaps as well as your art shots, so I can see all the fun you had!

Anyway, Packing right now, starting my drive tommorow morning! Yay!

Pshaw don't be silly David, of course you'll be missed. Gloves and kneepads are thoroughly packed for next week! Lots of luck to your family and hope you get some time to go shooting soon.

Hello from Banff! We just got here and I have 30 minutes free Wi-Fi so I probably won't reply but here's one from the pre-shootout in Jasper, Medicine Lake. Ann is fiending for Skippy and my 10-22's. Make her an offer to sell her one, she may bite.
Desperately seeking a wide angle....My 17 - 85 is dying (if not dead). Not sure if I can revive it.
If anyone coming on the trip has a 17 - 40, 10 - 22 or similar for sale (or 17 - 55 f2.8) or can pick a new one up before they get to Glacier, I'd love to hear from you.
We have web access tonight, not sure if we will in Glacier.
Like wise if anyone could find a Cokin graduated nuetral density filter and holder to bring me in glacier I'd appreciate it. I'd prefer .6 (two stops). 77mm thread for the filter holder.
I swear all those two do is whine, j/k. Here we are at Lake Louise. A little cloudy but still beautiful. It was icey when we got there but then thawed out. See you all soon.

At this point I'm planning on leaving the following lenses at home:
Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
but figured I'd offer to bring them if someone really wanted to use them.
