From my experiences while hiking in black bear country... If you have food the bears will smell it; there is no hiding (opened) food from bears. In Olympic National Park you are required to keep all your food (and anything that smells such as garbage, toothpaste, etc) in a bear canister, but that only prevents the bears from actually getting to your food, they can still smell it they just can't get into the bear canister.

I think the most you can do is have bear bells on your person, so that the bear can at least know your coming and have a chance to properly get ready for dinner.

Time to order a few cases........ rolleyes1.gif

But now what? Now I have to eat like 3 bars before we leave to be stocked up. Hopefully the bears wont smell it in my stomach..... :-)

I think we should draw straws every morning to see who's going to carry
5 lbs of bacon that day.mwink.gif

I may have to bring the video camera for this.

If bears can smell any food, I guess the wife shouldn't bring her strawberry shampoo.

Hey David, Sharon and I are also planning on spending Monday night in Great Falls (coming up from Yellowstone). Holler if you want to get together and make the Tuesday drive up together - or compare notes on the route. I'll email you my cellphone number.

    Jack, you have a PM.

To you all that are staying in Great Falls,

I grew up there, and I'd be glad to give you a few shooting locations that are close by if you are interested.

Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air has grounded their Q400 planes for emergency inspections.

The planes are only suppose to be grounded through Friday (9/14/2007), but I thought I should point this out, since this is the same plane that is used for the Seattle/Kalispell run. Hopefully they find that the problems with the SAS planes in Europe were an isolated incident.

Luckily devbobo and myself are taking the train to get to Glacier, its only for the trip back to Seattle that we're flying. :D

So, first thing we did was scour my yard for bugs - hard frost the last few nights means they are few and far between. Did find a couple of squirrels. Put some peanuts in the bird feeder and immediately had four jays - but that skippy character only cares about six legged flying things!

We'll check things out again midday tomorow, and head to the river valley for sweet light tomorrow evening.

Skippy, glad to hear you made it there OK. Save some of those big Canadian bugs for another week when the more powerful macro stuff arrives.

It's time I begin counting the sleeps.... 8 to go. Made more hotel reservations last night. 2 more reservations then all I need to do is pack. And sleep. And drive drive drive.

The day is here for me and the wife to head out.
Going to Devil's tower, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and lastly, Glacier.

Hopefully I'll have internet connections along the way to show off, I mean put up a few shots along the way.

See you folks on the 24th.

BTW, If we happen to get to St Mary's before the rest of you, How are the rooms reserved?
Are they in our names, or is there a group name that goes with it?
    dave.

    Entrance fees
Was just looking through the Glacier NP web pages and notice there is an entrance fee. Is this covered by what we've already paid? Or are we not considered part of a group and we should plan on paying this when we arrive?

No biggie either way, just wondering...Doug

I plan on using NP pass. You can get them at REI. Either Mt. View or
    Saratoga.

All that is covered by your payment is your room and your portion of the meeting room that we need to rent. Everything else is a la carte.

    Suggestions on gear?
I've never been on the shootout before and haven't been to Glacier either. In looking at the upcoming Marc/Andy Shenandoah NP Workshop they list suggested gear.

What are the pros, and repeat shootouters, suggesting we bring on this outting?
