Take 2 frozen "Stirfry's Bean Burgers", chop them up, cook them with tomato sauce and serve over pasts for a really quick, really hearty, pasta sauce! YUM.
Isn't it totally the most versatile recipe EVER?! I'm glad you're finding it useful, it's perfect for last-minute recipes - especially for someone in transition from a full-meat to non-meat diet.
On a separate note, what is everyone planning on eatin' for Easter brunch or lunch?? Any special "occasion" recipes to share? (I cheat; we eat out)
So no late night healthy eating suggestions out there from all you health freaks?
I know Google is my friend, but I wanted to ask in here first for any tried and true solutions.
That's Freak with a capital F to you, kind sir
What is it you normally eat at night? It was discussed some pages earlier in the thread, if you want to try a search ... but if you give us an idea of what you normally reach for (salty? sweet? crunchy?) I'm sure the royal we can come up with some healthful alternatives for you.
Few things are worse than taking the time to commit to a dietary change, research a recipe, buy the stuff, prep the stuff, and then have it taste like suck. It's good you asked here for tried-and-true, and gave Google the day off .
I went with 1-1/2 teaspoons. You could leave it out entirely and the curry sauce just wouldn't be quite as sweet. I thought it was sweeter than we needed so I'd probably go half next time.
Many of our sauce recipes from the restaurant call for brown sugar; at home I usually put half the amount called for, and then add a squirt of honey (which isn't vegan) or agave nectar (which IS vegan and is a straight substitute for honey).
I tried to eliminate the brown sugar completely, and didn't love the taste of the sauces ~ it's probably because I had the sauces daily, so am quite accustomed to the taste of the full-sugar recipe . For someone trying a new recipe, I bet a full sub of honey or agave nectar for the brown sugar might be okay to the taste?
Instead of standard brown sugar, I use raw sucanat stored in my freezer. It might just be my imagination, but it seems sweeter and I can get away with using less.

Salad with baby spinach, broccoli, carrots, romaine, Iceberg, kale, Onion, garlic and the blueberry dressing in ETL......fruit smoothies thru out day.....and then off to world buffet for STIRFRY....Love stirfry veggies with maybe a touch of either grilled Salmon or fake crab (better know as Alaskan Pollock)....... chef there knows not to use any type of butter (YUCK...never liked butter, and I have had to churn well over a thousand pounds of that stuff) or oils when cooking for me....and I just might toss in a small portion of rice noodles....but doubtful
First time I made them, came out OK. I have to read better. I skipped the letting them set for a spell part. I also think they were too wet, as they fell apart more than I think they should have.
They were yummy, and I think they'll be yummier next time, and even better the time after that! (It's a bit of an art form, I'm finding!)
Just got the book yesterday and have been reading it a lot. It's a great read and full of tons of information. I found it interesting that one of the authors is a professor at Cornell. I live 15 minutes from there and have quite a few friends who attend/work there.
Thanks again for the book, it's given me a new perspective on what I'm eating. I'll let you know more once I've finished reading it.

My first go at this recipe left me with 15 BIG brgers, rather than stirfry's 5. I don't measure so well when I cook!!!
Mine are moister than i think they should be,too. I am pulling them from the freezer a few at a time, grilling them and then reheating any uneaten ones, and loving every bite!
I think you will find them very versatile, and accepting of many different flavors. A real staple, like the soups.
I've actually been very uneasy about the food we've been giving our little one but I'd never heard of BARF. I have to say that the acronym isn't selling it to me.
So this is one (very good) option. Are there many others? I'd love to hear about them while I do my own research.
I agree the name is a little less than appealing, but the results are pretty are very impressive. Marty, our Great Pyr, used to have a bad rash on his belly and lots of ear infections changing to BARF made it go away. Chloe, our Newfoundland, has bad hips and used to have a skin rash as well, the rash went a way. Chloe is getting better hips from exercize. We take her to the vet for the physical therapy and she gets a check up about once a month and the biggest thing they say, she looks good on weight at 111 pounds, she is doing well on the treadmill, and has great teeth.
I am trying to get the video to upload...
Now for the best side effect, smaller "output" of the food after processing.
More Podcast Finds: Cut the Nutri-Hype. Eat Real Food
Another Podcast I found on the Bryant Park Project. This one from Michael Pollan. Here is the link. In it, he also reveals his guilty pleasure foods. It is about 16 minutes. More linky stuff.

I love the BPP. I listen on my Sirius most mornings on my commute.
Funny story: for weeks I was listening, but never at the top of the hour, so I never heard them do that whole "located by historic Bryant Park", so I didn't know it was based on a location. I kept wondering who this Bryant Park was, and why was it HIS project?
Yesterday was full of stress, followed by a party with the usual culprits on the menu, and I ended up lying awake with pain in my hip (that had gone away months ago), pain in my 'impingement syndrome' shoulders and a really crappy sleep! Today I am in need of a major cleanse!!!! No easter feast here! Or at least not in the traditional sense.
Date Nut Balls sans the ball part - I made them today, but as per usual I changed some things.
I used 1/2 c pecans and 1/2 c cashew in place of the walnuts (don't like walnuts).
I didn't make them balls. Instead I lined a rectangular loaf pan with wax paper and pressed the mix in. Popped into the fridge. Took them out after a couple hours, sliced them into cubes. Put back in a tupperware container.
So far, with only the dh sampling, they are a big hit!:ivar
(bought 'organic' raw nuts and paid a fortune for them).
(My weekend really hasn't gotten better - took the compost out, slipped on ice, landed on my tailbone and slammed my head onto the edge of the deck - I'm blaming the new glasses perscription for that)
I had $300 in Costco rebate money and had to pick one of these babies up during their road show. It was priced at $379 and they threw in an extra four year extended warranty so it matches Vita-mix.
And yes... it will blend. I threw in a frozen brick of raspberries (with some freezer burn and ice crystals on chunk of raspberries) and some soy milk -- smooth! I was a bit scared for a moment when I realized what I did, but the blendtec just ate it up. I couldn't believe my eyes...

Yeah, he has quite the resume. He headed the National Science Foundation's nutrition panel for years and is the Senior Science Advisor for the American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Research Fund (1983-1987, 1992-present), visiting scholar at Oxford, honorary professor at the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine, etc.
I'm one of the few freaks who bought the original book of data from Dr. Campbell and Sir Richard Peto's (Oxford) original China Study (the book cost $200). It took a lot of courage on their part to report data that showed cancer went down with higher consumption of cigarettes in China. It took Richard Peto something like 7 years to gather more data that explained it (in China at the time most cigarettes were homemade, cheap, not very carcinogenic, and people smoked them heavily; but when imported ciggies came, they were expensive and very carcinogenic and people smoked less of them but got more cancer).

We'll help you!
It's still best to break up frozen things just to minimize abuse on the blades, but it sure is fun to listen to it just chew 'em up. When my VM was delivered I wanted to throw in nuts and bolts with a little water just to see what it would do.
I find that with the VM it'll handle ice just fine but I always get nervous making gooey concoctions like pâté or thick hummus. Maybe try one of those and see how it handles? At worst you'll get some chunky dip to snack on.
My newest official weight loss results are in. This was my second hydrostatic bodyfat test.
188.5 lbs, 18.7% bodyfat today
vs 202 lbs, 24.5% bodyfat on 1/12/08
and a weight last fall between 210-215 lbs.
I also gained a little muscle mass, while loosing a lot of fat. My optimal target is 182 with 15.9% bodyfat. I am hoping to possibly see 179 lbs and just under 15% bodyfat by summer. I think I can do it, which if someone asked me if I could weight 180 lbs last fall I would have thought they were nuts. I also had to dig through the closet for a belt I have probably not worn in eight years, but my current belt would not hold my pants up any longer.
I attribute a lot of this loss from a large change in my diet, lots more fruits and veggies, and a lot less pizza and burgers, plus a lot of working out. I have to give a lot of thanks to this thread and Baldy for his healthy living movement.
It also might be time to step up to a Vita-Mix. I need to start making my own green smoothies to step it up a notch.

WTG Patch! Your goals are definitely within the realm of reason.
I wish the HSBF tests worked for me... The two I've tried said I was at 6.2% which is VERY obviously not the case (I'm more than twice that). Was weird that two different machines gave me the exact same inaccurate result.

I think my results are fairly accurate. I would like to try an old school skin fold test just to see how it compares. The numbers I am getting from the HSBF test are very close to my BMI results as well. I will say the first test really motivated me to get under 20%.
Thanks everyone. It has been a lot of work, but I consider it a second job, almost my primary job. I only wish it paid better.
Does anyone know where I can find a discount on a vita-mix?
You can buy refurbished, or you might think about getting a Vita-Prep, the commercial version. This site seems to have a good price on it, and it's a little more powerful than the home version. I think the warranty is shorter, though.

Call 'em (them = VM) and according to ETL you get a discount just for mentioning the using the book....just no mention of how much a discount....or you could always purchase a refurbed one from VM................
BTW way to go on the wt/fat loos and muscle gain..FREAKIN' FANTASTIC MAN!!

Because commercial kitchens are brutal on equipment. A normal user would use it 3 times a day maybe. A restaurant could use it upwards of 200 times a day.
Thanks for that though David. I'm gonna go check out the commercial versions now. I never bothered before since I didn't even think the price could be lower.

Really impressive, Patch.
There is a triathlon coach that I respect whose mantra is, "There is no easy way. You'll never become a good triathlete until you come to grips with the fact that there is no silver bullet. You have to earn it. Good genes won't save you."
But if you are one of the few willing to pay the price, your fitness can be extraordinary.
Same with health. There is no easy way, no pill, no magic exercise. You have to eat whole plants, get the vegetables down and stay away from the bacon.
But if you do, it's shocking how it transforms you.
We have a regular parade of people coming to our house now who are on a cocktail of powerful meds. Blood pressure over 160, heart disease, obesity, and a dozen small ailments from arthritis to sleep apnea. It's so amazing to watch their transformation once they finally decide there is no easy way and the magic pills they're on didn't save them.
