This gallery had a watermark applied to all photos using the watermark option in Photo Tools. Two pictures in the gallery were not updated. If you select one of the individual pictures and look at Photo Tools, the Watermark option is not there.

I selected a different picture, selected the watermark tool and tried to apply it again to the two affected pictures, but it still doesn't show. Any idea what's happening here? I've got at least one other gallery with the same problem.

    Thanks
Do both pictures have one side larger then 800px?

look under the gotcha's to make sure you are not affected by them http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-watermark-protection (all the way at the bottom)

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think that must be it. The 800px minimum applies to the original file uploaded, right?

Yes, that is correct. The original image needs to have a side of 801px or greater.

It just occurred to me that the watermarking could be used to do some cool stuff. Check out this gallery: http://mikelane.smugmug.com/gallery/1407018/1/66616171

See the rounded corners that the images have? That's a watermark and therefore won't be printed with the image. You can create any border or corner effect that you want with a few conditions. First off, if you're going to do something like those rounded corners then you will have to match up the aspect ratio of your images. The images in my gallery that I linked have an aspect ratio of 3:2 so my watermark was 800px by 533px (800 is the largest that one side of a watermark can be). If I had portrait oriented shots then I'd also have to do a watermark that was 533px x 800px (or copy the current one and rotate the copy thumb.gif). If I had non-standard sized crops (compared to the rest of my site) or panoramics or whatever, then each of those images would require its own corner watermark image. Your images will also have to be on a plain color background. And if you change the color of your background, you'll also have to change the color of your watermark and manually adjust every single photo that is watermarked. This technique may not work for those of you who are changing your site design all the time. The watermark obviously cannot go past the borders of the image. So if you've got an idea for a fancy distressed border look or something else cool, you won't be able to make it extend past the borders of the image itself. Also watermarks don't get added to original sized images.

If you're interested in how i created the rounded corners let me know, it's really not that difficult.

    Critique my watermark...
Would appriciate your thoughts & suggestions regarding this watermark I made. It is the same watermark placed on 3 different photos... certainly works much better on some than others (namely solids)... what should I do to improve it? I don't want a mark that makes the pics ugly... but I do want to protect them enough from all the local kids stealing them... btw: you wouldn't believe how many kids have asked me why they can't copy & paste my photos anymore without getting those marks on them - lol! Yeah smugmug!!!

Here's one of my first macro's taken with my new 105 VR... I'm lovin this lens... need lots of practice though - macro is challenging. rolleyes1.gif

How to add my site name under smugmugs own proof?
I like smugmugs "proof". It's nice and large and perfect opacity and such. However, I'd like to add my ©motoximages.com right underneath it.

I don't know what font/size/color,etc. smugmugs is. Is there an easy way to do this?

Here's the one I did and I'd like the "proof" part to be spread out more across the photo. Any suggestions would be mucho appreciado!

Yeah, I like the PROOF too-- very simple and straight forward. But I love your idea of adding your own touch to it-- just may be how I customize my own watermarks. I've tried others but they just don't seem to work as well as that PROOF. Thanks for the idea.

You don't have external links on for that gallery, here is the shot you meant to have show up inline, yes?

I created a 4000 x 4000 pixel watermark so that it would more than cover my images whether landscape or portrait, yet it isn't doing that. Whats the deal?
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me

Can we have a link to your site and a gallery/photo so we can see how this 4000x4000px is being applied?

    Thanks,

Hi bham, watermarks keep their aspect ratio and get resized to fit the photo.

Have you read our watermark tutorial? you can also have smaller watermarks tiled.

I did read the tutorial. What I have created is a watermark repeated over and over. Didn't realize you could tile. That may solve it. I will try that.

When you make a bulk setting change to multiple galleries is the watermark setting adjusted as well?

But that just changes the watermark setting for new photos uploaded. It does not add watermarks to photos that are not watermarked...correct? I'm under the impression that I need to go into each gallery and watermark them, I can not make a bulk change to all galleries adding watermakrs to every photo.

It seems that watermarked images get more JPG compression artifact then otherwise. Is that true? or am I imagining things?

Hi, they do not. They get the same (very little) as our non-watermarked images. We actually reduced the amout of compression on our resized images, to gain higher display quality, a few months back:

    Watermarks with color???????
Are my eyes playing tricks or what? Are watermarks in color now? Or have they been?

Can you see what I am seeing or is my computer playing tricks with me? I was playing with a new logo and trying to see if I could make a watermark with it and on my screen and I see colors in it. Can You?

Was this question ever answered? ne_nau.gif I like the smug "PROOF" as it covers every image just right...and lord knows I can't make my custom one do that. It would be nice to add my own text above and below the smug "PROOF". I only have PS Elements 3.0 BTW.

I've played with the watermarking quite a bit, but I have never gotten one to fit over the image the way I like it, in both Landscape and Portrait. I'm thinking about giving up......headscratch.gif

Try something like 200pt Myriad, but really, any font will do...
