    I use the comment space of some of my galleries to communicate back and forth with some of my customers that are out of my immediate area. (i.e. Senior Portraits I did for a gal that lives 3 hours from me....her and her mom are able to leave comments below the pictures and it makes it much easier for me to remember what images they have asked questions about or want to see touched up. They can leave comments to tell me which ones they do/don't like, etc.)

    It would be nice to somehow have a message that pops up on my homepage (just for me when I'm logged in) that tells me I have new comments. I think something like that happens when there is new "news"? It would help to remind me that I need to check and see what my customers are wanting.

    Thanks again!

    There is a way to get notified of new comments...I get notified of mine. It's in 'Account Settings'.:D

    Request redirect link in smugmugcart
    Hi,

    Would like to request the "prints & gifts" link at the bottom of the "Your shopping cart is empty" page be linked to the http://www.smugmug.com/prints/catalog2.mg page (without the prices shown) deal.gif

    As it is now that link sends everyone to http://www.smugmug.com/prints/catalog.mg page WITH the prices shown.... :cry

    I hoped to do it from my site but realize it's at the smugmug end...

    I can't come up with any logical reason that the link from anywhere within the 'cart' experience should redirect to a/the page with prices--especially when we've got that great 'catalog2.mg' page already being used in some spots !headscratch.gif

    please see this thread for more info and pics of each example
    http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=81063

    Just hope to fine tune the always excellent 'smugmug experience' mwink.gif

    Custom Choices in print ordering.........
    Would like to see the option to offer custom choices in the shopping cart.
    For example: one more "tab" that can be customized by the photographer to offere whatever they want to sell at whatever price they want to sell it at...... obviously, without EZPrints in the mix. These would be items we would be self-fulfilling like, notecards, the price of the photo they like full matted and framed, etc. That tab should have the same look and feel of the other tabs, just be available for customization.

    Smugmug has separated itself in some ways, by the wealth of ways one can customize their look and feel. This would simply fall in line with Smugmug's
    "be different or be damned" :-)

    Thank you for creating such a great thread where your customers can tell you what they would like to see. Just one more way Smugmug can keep itself at the top of the chain in photo gallery hosting.

    API to show number of "Hidden" images in HEAVY albums.get call
    It would be really useful (and saves on the number of API calls and coding) if the API returned the number of hidden images in a gallery in the HEAVY "albums.get" output.

    For example:

    [0] => Array
            (
                [id] => 3681100
                [Category] => Array
                    (
                        [id] => 0
                        [Name] => Other
                    )

                [Highlight] => Array
                    (
                        [id] => 0
                    )

                [Community] => Array
                    (
                        [id] => 0
                    )

                [Position] => 1
                [ImageCount] => 40
                [B][HiddenCount] => 5          <----- HERE[/B]
                [Title] => Album Title
                [Description] => Album Description
                [Keywords] =>
                [Public] =>

    Two feature requests, apologies in advance if these have already been requested.

    1) More powerful searching. Currently there are three ways to search photos, by gallery, by date, and by keyword, but they're mutually exclusive (I'm not including categories and subcategories, because they're used to search galleries, not photos themselves). I'd really like to be able to use these in combination.

    The use case I'm thinking of primarily is filtering a gallery by a given keyword or keyword combination. I typically name my galleries according to location, not subject, so being able to see all "bird" photos within a given gallery would be useful (for example).

    But there's also another use case, showing all photos in a gallery within a date range. When I shoot some new photos and upload them, they almost always go into a gallery that already exists (unless I'm shooting somewhere new). I'd like to be able to send a link to just these photos, but my current choices are to send a link to all photos across all galleries that were created during that date range, or just send a link to the gallery and tell people that only the first X photos are recent.

    I understand that this may complicate the interface, but I think it would be very useful (for gallery owners and users browsing looking for specific photos).

    2) Second feature request: Watermarks on all photos above an arbitrary size, or the ability to specify different watermarks for each size. I don't want to watermark S/M/L photos, but maybe I would want to watermark XL. I might even want a different watermark for XL vs. XXL. I currently don't have any watermarks because I think they detract on smaller sizes, but they may be useful on larger sizes.

    3) (I lied). I'd also like to vote for the password protected categories/subcategories feature that was mentioned earlier.

    Thanks!

    CSS ID please for customizing a category
    I'd like a CSS ID (derived from the category name) on the minibox div that contains each category. That would allow people to show/hide categories very easily using just CSS rather than having to resort to custom JavaScript like in this thread.

    ANother vote for copy
    Often I want to add an existing photo to a new gallery and still have it in the original. Ok I can upload again, or make second copy then move. A simple Copy Photo would be great.

    Wireless Device Version
    Howdy-

    This one is small but figure I would ask. It would be nice if there was a "portable device" template or view that was automatically invoked when connecting via a handheld device. So that the gallery formatting would still be applied when viewed through a non handheld.

    I am thinking about Blackberry, Palm, Treo, iPod Touch, iPhone... etc. I went in and created a gallery and set it to default to all thumbs. However it was still not as ideal as wanted. It is a little slow to navigate and tough on the Blackberry.

    I was envisioning a version that has a smaller image size, such as 320 x 320 or even better by the desire portable device. The default

    The idea being that one can view and browse the images on the portable device without having to download the large files. Does that make sense?

    Product request - 4x6 spiral bound proof books
    I plan on making these myself for portrait sessions and events but... wow it'd be so cool if I could just add something like this to my cart from a gallery of images.

    A tri-fold type book similar to this:
    http://www.mpix.com/productsinfo.aspx?prod=10
    but the back cover made to open up to reveal order forms.

    Instead of pages such as the link shows above I want to spiral bind 4x6's or whatever size prints (with optional watermarks &/or filenames).
    - Clear Front cover so the first photo shows through
    - Back: Something hard for stability that folds open and out to reveal order forms.
    When the back is opened up to reveal the order forms they could flip through viewing the proofs and orderforms at the same time, adding filenames to the order form. When finished tear the order form out and pass the book on to the next family member to order from.

    I could make my own order forms to add in the books... maybe the back that opened up could simply include some sort of fastener to hold them in.

    I think alot of pros like me with customers who either:
    - don't trust ordering on-line
    - want to see actual prints
    - have slow connections
    - etc, etc
    would really benefit and increase print sales with a product like this.

    I plan on shooting every local highschool football game next fall and could really use something like this there as well. Simply take the books to each following game and collect the orders.

    Thanks so much for reading if you read this far. I'd love to hear your comments, etc.

    Virtual Gallery
    The one and only top requirement from me is to have Virtual Galleries. I believe this is a known concept so I will not describe it in detail.

    For short, one single photo should be shown in other galleries than the one where it is stored. With this we would gain the following:
    • Less use of Smugmug storage
    • No need to upload same photo many times
    • Changing photo attributes on the real photo will automatically be shown in the virtual galleries
    • The internal work done by Smugmug (like making various sizes) need only be done once
    • ... and probably many other things ...
    and the most important benefits for me:
    • I will be able to show a summary of a large number of photos
    • In one gallary I can store the highlits from many other galleries
    Regards, Harald

    My Feature Requests
    Hello Smugmug World,

    I have 2 feature / changes I would like to see implemented if at all possible.

    1. Alphabetically sorted list of galleries in the drop down lists. It is very hard to quickly find the gallery I am looking for.

    2. Easy Share Option. I would like to have easy share turned off for all visitors to my site but turned on for me. Instead of having to change the gallery settings everytime I want to post a link to a picture.

    Thanks, Keep up the great work,

    I think you can accomplish item #2 with CSS customization. You would enable the Easy Share option globally and then you would use custom CSS to hide it except when you are logged in. A question in the customization forum will probably find someone who can help you do this.

    Thanks for the suggestion but I only have a standard account so no customization for me.
    It seems a strange thing to allow visitor to my site the option to easy share, I think the default should be that the owner can use easy share and then turn it on for visitor if we wish.

    that works pretty well for public galleries as one can browse through it. However what I can not do is send a link like http://nickname.smugmug.com/iphone/gallery so that they can go to a private gallery or directly to a public gallery.

    password protect category or subcategory
    I would love to be able to password-protect a category or subcategory all with one password which would gain access all galleries within the cat/sub-cat. Ex: I post all my family galleries and wsh with one password, my family would gain access to all 30+ family galleries. Is this possible?

    I would love this feature too because I have this situation with each of the youth sports teams that I photograph (~20 galleries per team in a custom category).

    My work-around is to give every gallery in the category the exact same password and then use Feature Photo to give each gallery a gallery thumbnail. Then, when the viewers open the category, they see the thumbs.

    When they open the first gallery, they are challenged for a password. When they go to open a 2nd gallery (that has the same password as the first), they are not challenged for a password again, so the viewer only has to enter the password once in order to view all the galleries. It's almost as good as a category password - the main difference being that you have to manually apply the same password to every gallery and the viewer is allowed to open the category and see the gallery listing before entering a password.

    I don't know anything about their future plans, but Smugmug has said previously that they don't intend to be in the RAW display or backup business and they have suggested other services like Jungle Disk to accomplish that. Here's one recent dgrin thread that discusses some of the options.

    It would be nice to have SmugMug generate two thumbnails, one normal and one with an additional overlay; e.g., an X. This second thumbnail can then be automatically used in lieu of the normal thumbnail when the photog uses the Hide Image feature.

    With a lot of images in a gallery one can easily forget which images are hidden, and looking image-by-image for the checked box could be painful.

    Guess it's time for this one :-)
    I guess I have a new request based on my own / new experience......

    STOP re-watermarking from removing all thumnail zoom styling. In other words, find a way for a smugmug member to retain all the hard work they put in to zooming their thumnails (sometimes MANY of them) even after changing watermark styles on their photos.

    Not much to ask for, right? :-)

    Email Newsletter Sign-Up?
    I would love to have a way for people to sign up for the "photo journal" I currently manage and send out manually.

    It would be great to be able have a sign-up on my SM site and a way to send out the images and commentary from here. This would probably mean that SM would have to carry the email list, and create a platform for us to manage the mailings.

    An alternative could be simply offering a sign-up link that would forward the subscriber's info to us, so we could add it to our manual lists - less desireable, but better than nothing!

    Thanks for considering!

    You can do this now. Set up a form (easy to do, www.emailmeform.com ) and then put that form in a gallery. Then you can do your own emailing :)

    Super easy, I have one on my site, though it's purely for contact, Dane: http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/4217152
