11 pt AF? Canon is really falling behind on this. Was disappointed with 40D on this, can not imaging the 5D still with so few AF pts.
I wouldn't take that rumor seriously. The 5DII won't have a pop up flash because the full frame prisim is too large to leave room. That said, I'd rather have a small number of good AF sensors than a large number of poor ones (which seems to be the trend these days). Heck, 3 sensors of the same grade as the center one on the current 5D would be a step up.

As long as the sensors points are all of the "cross" type and the center point is of high-sensitivity, that's all that is needed.
I have, obviously, many more potential points on the 1D MKII but I don't use that many in practice and it would be very slow to do so for the majority of what I do.

More isn't always better.
I think Ziggy's point regarding cross type sensors is right on the money. If the quality of each sensor is improved, then you need fewer. Fewer also means less complicated too.

Well certainly in sports photography, more is often better, where my 40D for example has relatively big gaps between sensors where a player can be out of focus between them. Of course, this is what the 1DMkIII was designed for, and the 40D was not.
However, if I compare the 40D (and 5D) to newer offerings from Nikon, I find that Nikon is adding sensors to bridge this gap between the higher end and the mid-levels. The D300 has much better coverage, though as you say, it likely doesn't make a difference in portaits or landscape.

Well, don't let your subject fall inbetween focus points then. All those focus points require horsepower, and horespower requires money and consumes batteries. The 5D isn't meant for action photography. As such having a ton of focus points probably isn't the wisest place to spend the budget (both in price of parts, and the electrical budget as well).
I used to have a 1D Mark II. Tons of focus points. I often used only a small subset of the available points (usually center spot only, and giving the camera the option to branch out only a bit to follow the action), and I shot sports. Most sports shooters I know use that AF mode, actually, and don't utilize most the AF sensors available. The more active you have, the slower the AF becomes. I suspect Nikon is adding more AF sensors as a marketing bullet more than as a real customer need. Kinda like the mega-pixel race.
It makes perfect sense to purchase what you need, which is not necessarily the latest and greatest of anything.
If the current Canon 5D meets your needs, it is currently pretty inexpensive to buy.
Everyone is hoping for news of new cameras at Photokina next month.
Hello ziggy, many thanks for your answer
Sure the current Canon 5D is a great camera, but why not buy the last model?
I know it's much more expensive, but at least, I'll get a new camera wich will serve me for a lot of years, I think

Guess the pt is that you can't buy rumors. If you need a 5D now, it is available to buy. No telling when mkII ships, we have been having this conversation for over a year now.

I am really expecting both a 3D and a 7D from Canon. Both would likely have the same sensor. The 7D would be the real replacement for the 5D and look like a 50D with an upgraded sensor for around $2300. The 3D would be weather sealed, have a better AF system, sell around $3300 and be targeted at the same market as the D700.

Great, 3 years from the 5D's release and all they got is a viewfinder hump.
It'll take another 3 years to develop the rest of the camera.
Canon should get it's act together and just release the darn thing and be done with it.
lol
I wonder, with all the liveview and video modes, when Canon adds an articulated display?
I mean, the cheap P&S had it for years, can't be *that* hard or expensive to do...

I'm thinking selling my good old 20D and buy the new 5d MKii...
Anyone know, or have a good guess, when it will be released?
I think it's nonsense buying the 5d now, since we are so close of seeing the new 5d mkii.
Many thanks!

It is on the steps
Canon EOS 30D, Canon 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, Tokina 12-24 f/4. Sigma 1.4 TC, Feisol 3401 Tripod + Feisol ballhead, Metz 58 AF-1 C, ebay triggers.
Wow, talk about a teaser...
"Is the light good for you?" "No, there still is some."
I have a feeling what's on the steps is a press release that says "got ya!"

I hope it works very well in very low light situations and weighs less too.
The future or something flash ad! Ooooh!
