Nikolai was looking for someone to suck down some red wine with. Don't know how many tuques he has being in LA.

You mean you've never heard the infamous Bob and Doug McKenzie "Take Off". That's where I learned about all things Canadian ("eh?", "take off", and "tuque").

Anyway, in my neck of the woods, we call it a stocking cap, and my three year old loves wearing her's even in the hot Las Vegas summer.

I've been checking extended weather forecast for the Moab area and looks like it'll be sunny and warm during the days of the shootout. With outside temperatures in the low 80's, I can see the inside of our vehicles would get toasty quickly. Do we have to worry about storing our gears inside our warm vehicles?

Store your gear? headscratch.gif

You won't be storing your gear...you will be using your gear....all your gear....constantly....no sleep! :D

I would say don't leave a camera or lenses in a hot car. If you're not going to use some gear, leave it in your room.

I'm sure everyone will be loaded down with equipment. Luckily my wife comes along to help me lug some of my gear around. I heard about the sleep deprivation part. We'll be running on adrenaline and caffeine.

I just wanted to say now, before too many of you take off and become detached from the internet and Dgrin, that if anyone has ANY administrative questions/concerns regarding this shootout to please don't hesitate to grab me and ask. I'm shy but not antisocial. lol3.gif

I'm no pro at this and am just filling in for our regular Dgrin mastermind, but even if I don't have the answer for you right away I promise to look into it and get back to you, OK?

That said, see you all next week!

Mountain Biking
Any mountain bikers out there that are thinking of bringing their bike? Might be a fun midday diversion. After all, Moab is mountain bike mecca, or so I hear.

I am!:D:D:D

In the pre-shootout thread I said:
...
I’m driving west from Illinois in early October. ...... I am planning to do some mountain biking on the way out. Once I get to Moab my plans are less defined (so far). I’ll probably be in Moab 10/5-10/8 .I’m actively investigating how best to spend my pre-shootout time. If you’re coming in early I’m up for:

Photography
Light hiking with photography
Photography with light hiking
Mountain biking with photography
Photography with mountain biking
And then probably a nap :D

Oh, I notice that the 24 Hours of Moab mountain bike race is 10/11-10/12! This event should provide some photo opportunities.
Nothing too gonzo, really! No plans for any epic rides. I'll stop in Fruita on the way out to see what it's about. I'd like to ride a day or two anyway since I'll be in Mecca. I hear there are some new trails (still reading up).

Excellent. That's one person anyhow. :D We won't be rolling into Moab until Tuesday or Wed. I'll PM ya my cell number, and maybe we can hook up. Worst case, I'll see you at the shootout!

Oooo, ooo, finally something I know something about.

Check out http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/

There are a lots of trails in/around Moab, many of which are not too gonzo (although we do have gonzo).

A nice one just down the road from Red Cliffs is Onion Creek. Drive up the dirt road a way till you see a parking area on your left, park the car and head up the road. Go as far as you'd like, it starts mellow and gets steeper. Also, you crosss Onion creek a dozen times so if it is hot this is one of my favorite mellow rides.

Also try Hidden Canyon/The Gymnasium, it goes by different names depending on how far you go, but drive right up to the water trough (it's sometimes dicey but you can get any car there if you drive slow enough) There is one small dirt hill to start off and then you are on fantastic slickrock with a great canyon you ride right up to. You can also see Lunar canyon from there ( a small hill climb to the right about maybe a mile in) There is a good reason they call it Lunar. This area is great for slickrock pictures and is way less crowded than the Slickrock Trail.

Then there is the Circle O (I call it the Bar M), a little steep climb and then you are on a dirt road that skirts slickrock around Arches. Head north for the best slick rock, stay on the road and divert onto the slickrock for easy playing, you can always return to the road.

Of course the coup de grass is the Slickrock Trail. Don't let the first hill intimidate you, take it slowly and do switchbacking like you would on any steep trail. Forget the practice loop, head right to the main trail and don't be afraid to get off your bike and walk, either uphill or down, it's no big deal and by doing this you can do the entire trail and not put your life at risk. It truly is a fantastic place.

So many trails, so little time...

Also, if you don't want to lug your bike, there are plenty of places to rent one. Rim Rock and Poison Spider are two of the original shops in town, but there are dozens to choose from. All of them will give you good info and maps usually.

Well ok, maybe... I've only been to one of these as my neighbor needed a support team. I thought the whole thing was an environmental disaster. Cars tearing up the place creating deep powdery dust bowls. The place was so nasty and dusty that many riders rode with dust masks on. Tearing up the basin where the start/finish line is...makes me shudder. Might be some good pics, but bring a dustproof camera and lots of lens cleaner. [soapbox]You also might leave your conscience behind :cry [/soapbox]

Not sure everyone is here, but lots of people
Not sure the organization has gotten any better. We arrived after 9pm and the first thing people said was "What's going on?".

Well, its cool to shoot Arches! Totally beautiful and it will be a total blast even if the execution isn't very crisp.

Looking forward to tomorrow and hope to soon be able to post some pre-trip pics from Zion, Bryce, Kodachrome Basin, Capital Reef, Goblin Valley and, of course, Arches! Shooting is soooooo fun, but I've got to find some time to process so the pics are suitable to share.

Hope to see y'all around!

We got here about 4pm and if we hadn't run into some other dgrinners we wouldn't have known that Marc was meeting with a group at the Windows at 5pm. The white board was blank. ne_nau.gif We were able to meet up with him out at the Windows. When we returned from Arches (and dinner) we were happy to see the white board had finally been put to use.

Gotta get to bed now, we are heading out at 5am.
