Speaking of which, Frommer's has got a nice little guide book, Zion & Bryce
Canyon National Parks as do Lonely Planet (same title).
Either would be a great asset in planning your trip. There are several good
maps of the area too. One of which is the National Geographic's Zion National
Park map.
Something you can do that's a fun little excercise in planning is to build up a
shot list based on the sun's position in the sky. Say you wanted to shoot The Three Patriarchs, would you shoot it at Sunrise, Sunset or some
other time? Sounds easy but it's a bit tricky and you might want to account
for several factors. Including the altitude of surrounding objects as well as
the angle of the sun and the height of your eye.
This was my attempt at deciding what I wanted to shoot. Anybody have
other ideas?

"Secrets of Bryce and Zion", or Q 4 AW
Thanks to Kudbegud, I was able to record this Discovery Travel one hour feature on my PVR. It's not HD (sigh), but it's well worth watching. It was great to see the same places I so vividly remember from my 2003 trip.
It also brings up a question, most likely to Andy: do we already have an more-or-less specified "route" agendas for both canyons, especially for Zion?
The reason I'm asking is that Bryce is far smaller and far more accessible. Well defined sunrise/sunset vantage points, just a handful of a relatively short and very easy (2-3) hiking trails make Bryce a relatively easy target even for a limited time frame.
Zion, on the other hand, is huge, and if you wanna get some really nice and unique shots you have to be ready for some pretty intense hikes. Upper Emerald Pool (guide says 1 hour but in fact it's more like 2 or 3, unless you simply run back and forth), Angels Landing (guide says 5 hours, I'd say it's more like 8 - and have 8Gb worth of media ready).
And the slot canyons of The Narrows - I'm not even sure how to approach it with all our heavy yet delicate photo gear.
Of course, there are easy vistas, too (Weeping Rock, and such), but if you are in a good hiking shape and would like to take some breath-taking shots you better start planning now...
Hmmm...so I was sitting here reading the latest in this forum, and my MP3 player started playing the song "Set Your Eyes To Zion" by P.O.D.
I haven't read the stuff in this forum for months...hmmm is it a sign that I need to get my act together and see if there are any spots left? I think so.

Please be aware that reservations to hike to the Wave are needed and
extremely scarce. Only 10 a day are allowed and reservations fill up
within the first TWO HOURS of being offered for the ENTIRE YEAR. Both North
and South Coyote Buttes need reservations. Do a Google and see what you
need to do.
They'll probably want a DNA sample next, just in case the tags are also mangled beyond recognition. Those shoot-outs
must be rough on the body.roflrofl
Dates and Airport Names Please
Heyyyyyyyyy.......... boy oh boy the time is flying by.
Okay.....forgive me for asking but I need to book my flights real soon to ensure getting to the 2006 on the right days
What airport do I need to fly to in UTAH ?? or is there only one there? and the date in USA would be what date ? and then how does one get from the Airport to where all you folks are gonna be ???
Please don't make me search the thread....I've been working my butt off for months now
Next question............ Nik...........what date will it be when the Post Shoot Out finishes, and is it for sure finishing in Las Vegas ???
I have to sort out all the internal flights within USA the external ones are not a problem .
Hope someone can sum it all up for me ........ Skippy (Australia)
Skippy, your best bet is probably Las Vegas' Mc Carran Interdimensional Airport. Then rent a car and climb the next 5,000 feet to Bryce for 'bout 100+ miles or so (I need to check the mileage of that - just guessing).
And yes, I did say Interdimensional. There are some strange people hanging about there. Aliens perhaps. The Area 51 flights for the workers take off from there. And no, I'm not kidding about that. Have your camera primed and ready.

A fellow photographer told me last night that having a National Parks Pass lets you bypass lines getting into the parks. Maybe this won't be much of an issue in mid-May. You can get one good for a year from first use online for $50 by going to https://buy.nationalparks.org/default.asp? Guess only folks who will be driving into the parks would need it, but is it worth it? Necessary? Advisable?

Doesn't really get you ahead of anyone but if you are a frequent park visitor,
any park, it will pay for itself on the third visit.
I usually buy one because it does save me money but also because it supports
the parks.

My wife and I are going to get one cause we're going to stop at Arches
on the way down. I think its $20 per park, so like Ian said, I save $10 by
buying it.
