Personally I like the cameras from Nikon and Canon. When I bought my first auto focus SLR I had a Minolta 3xi, but found that the controls and lens choices were limited. Then I bought a Canon A2E, this at the time was cheaper than the Nikon N90 that I wanted to buy at the time. I started to get used to the Canon control style and for my next camera bought a Canon EOS 3, then a 10D.
I would like to buy a Nikon F2 someday and wouldn't mind a D200 if there's enough improvement over my 10D. (Personally still upset Canon doesn't have a 10.5mm prime like Nikon.)
It's hard to say which company is better than the other. I have seen simply awesome pictures from both Nikon and Canon shooters, not to mention photographers using other less popular cameras.
I read up to the point where some brainiac said a D70 was a $1500 camera and that Nikon sucked because there is such a huge gap between D70 and D2. Um, last time I checked, Canon was the same or worse, or is there a mystery camera between the $1200 20D and the $3k 5d or $5k mkII's I don't know about? At least you can pick up a used D2h for $1200 which wipes up with a used 1D. mkII's are all still at $3k. Bubba, your numbers just don't compute.

I think photojournalism is a place that can demand shooting high ISO. You never know (and most times not can't control) the lighting you are going to be dealt.
Canon makes fantastic bodies and great lens. 80% of the pros shoot Canon. Daniel, stick with what you have. You will waste valuable shooting time buying/selling/trading.
This entire thread has been an entertaining read, but I never expected anyone to actually switch (or even entertain switching) because of it.
Both Nikon and Canon make great equipment and competition is good for the consumer. I have shot both brands, and my reason for going back to Canon is how prevalent their gear is. Every pro I know shoots Canon... that means every pro I know can let me borrow their gear! This is important to me (and probably would be to a teenage photo journalist).
As far as teenage photojournalism, I was in your shoes 10 years ago. I shot with an all manual Canon FT. I mean not even aperature priority or a motor drive. I still got the shot. I was even able to shoot far away sporting events with a 70-210 (without the a ratio) like football with great results. Learn your own gear and learn it well. That is the best way to take great shots!
i was thinkin about that ever since the D200 came out

Photography for me is about taking pictures and not getting the newest gadget with more bells and whistles. When I buy a camera I intend to shoot with it for a few years. It takes that long to get to know a camera (I'm slow). I don't want a new camera every other month.
I understand what you're saying entirely. I don't blame you for not wanting to upgrade. I'm pretty content w/ my 'outdated' DRebel/300D myself.
Where you loose me is how having a new model available hurts us as camera consumers. It strikes me as saying "Ford isn't a very good car company, they keep replacing their models with new ones." I hear this 'flavor of the month' argument from Nikon proponents quite a bit. If anything, I think it's a strike for Canon, not against them.
And I still contend that one year ago Canon had a much more attractive lineup.
Ya know, one reason I like DGrin is the (normal) absense of threads like these...
As long as it stays isolated to one (or two) threads, who cares. Where it becomes a problem is when folks start 'flaming' each other when discussing equipment.. or trolling. I don't see much of that around here. Fortunately..
Besides, people ask me questions about equipment. I'd like to hear all the editorial for and against the various brands I can.
I read up to the point where some brainiac said a D70 was a $1500 camera and that Nikon sucked because there is such a huge gap between D70 and D2. That was me, the 'braniac'. Sorry I caused you to stop reading. As one who's switched brands I would think your opinion would be useful.
I guess my perspective is just a heluva lot different. I can't (or won't) spend more than $1500 on a camera. Also comming from a P&S I wanted a kit, including lens. Under those conditions the D70 would have cost more than $1000. Cameras like the D1-whatever, D2-whatever, 1D-whatever, and even the 5D are entirely outside of the realm of imagination for my budget.
Maybe my numbers are off. I can't remember (and can't find info on) exactly how much the D70 cost last winter, before the D50 or RebelXT were introduced. But I do remember the price being comparable to that of the 20D. Meanwhile the DRebel/300D was HUNDREDS less. In my opinion, for the money, the 20D was a more attractive option. And for the value the DRebel was more attractive. Approximately one year ago I bought my Canon DRebel kit, the EF 70-200/4 L, and an EF 35/2.. all for $1300 after rebates. That's one heck of a deal. I didn't see any equivalent from Nikon. And I think a lot of other first time dSLR buyers saw this same matchup.
Now things have changed. Nikon offers the D50.. and finally has the D200. So the playing feild is a lot more level.
Were I buying today I'd consider breaking the bank and buying a D200 and planning on using it for 5 years or more. It looks to have all the features one needs.. but then again the same could be said for the 20D. .. But then I'm not buying today.. I bought a year ago, when the D200 wasn't even a rumor.
that's ironic... know where I am today? Cornell Nanofabrication Facility - we're patterning some 50nm features on the e-beam this morning.

I think it gives the mask designers something fun to do.

The other day, I read Naked City a book by Weegee about his career as a photojournalist in NY City during the '30s and '40s. The last chapter contains tips for aspiring press photographers. Here he is on the topic of choosing a camera:
If you are puzzled about the kind of camera to buy, get a Speed Graphic ... for two reasons ... it's a good camera, and moreover, it's standard equipment for all press photographers ... with a camera like that that the cops will assume you belong on the scene and will let you get behind police lines.
Now there is a nice objective practical way to choose a camera!
click on the pic to see a 100% crop of her left eye, and the background / shadows. Remember, this is a full-frame 5D, so the 100% crop is quite large. This shot printed at 8x10 quite clean! I'd go larger with no trouble.
I would agree with you if anyone here started taking this too seriously. The underlying message here is, if it works for you, great. Because it's not the camera, it's the photographer. And hopefully along the way you'll learn a little something. But mostly it's to have fun.
OK everybody, gather 'round. David has something serious to say about fun.

Everybody, I know this is all in good fun, but stop and take a deep breath, okay?
Let's see what a wide variety of shooting a Nikon can handle:
"Nikon DSLR's are horrible for landscape"...
"Nikon DSLR's are horrible for low-light photography..."
Hmm, what else is there to take pictures of?
Ah, that was refreshing now, wasn't it? If you didn't know what camera I owned, what camera would you suspect me of owning? Ehh?

I just bought my Pentacon/Eos adaptor. It should arrive in 2 weeks. Then shall the enemies of humanity (that would be Nikon) tremble!
They shall feel the wrath of my Biometar and the fury of my Orestegor, when I lay my judgement upon them!

I am amazed, however, by the creamy-buttery smoothness of the Canon at ISO 1600:
