AH, great thread! I love to see these live music shots I find because of great stage lighting, the shooting is the easy part. The hard part is getting permission to get an SLR out at a concert

Dream Theater and Iron Maiden
There are some very nice shots here. I'm just an amatuer trying to learn as much as possible. I went to a concert as a fan recently. DSLRs were not allowed. I took a Panasonic Lumix ZS5 point-n-shoot. I was seated to the right of the stage about 60-100 feet from the musicians. Considering these limitations I got a few shots that I like.
1. Mike Portnoy (Youngest drummer ever inducted into Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame.)

4. John Petrucci (My Favorite Shot of the Night)

Nice stuff here!!! Great thread. I'll jump out of weddingville to give up some of my 2nd love which is concert photography. here are a few of The Big Wu. The were the very first band to open the very first day of the very first Bonnaroo. That's about the extendt of their fame though! I love these guys and have recorded audio for them for years aswell as more recently done photography. This is from their former anual 3-day festival In Geneva MN called the Big Wu Family Reunion.

Peeks in!! 0_o *waves* Hey there! Im excited I found this Thread. I am working on building my business in the band/ music area. I gathered some good info from what i have read so far and plan on reading more so forgive me if ask a question that has been beat to death. Right now, I have been shooting family and friends bands. ART-- i hope you see this-- I wonder if you have photos of my dad (Ace) and uncles ( Rudy, Bob and many others)--- from reading your post its highly likely. (ill inbox u if i dont forget) if you see this post we are in the same area- Im looking for information on shooting larger bands/ artist. I do know people who know people-- so that would be an advantage-Not sure how much- I don't want to sound like an idiot when i approach them..lol-- so any tips would be great.

No images of Rudy or any other bands..since my divorce...they all went up in smoke and now I am having to rebuild business.
A lot of times I go to the band them selves and find the Publicist if the Manager is of no help.....
If you get permission from the band management / publicists then you can have morethan the prescribed 2 - 5 songs or in some cases 3 minutes (1 song)...other wise I opt for permission to shoot and do it from the stage barrier.....I take my time in front of the barrier towards the middele of the concert..so the enrgy is higher and the sweat is more pronounced...no flash....a camer with good high ISO is a must with digital.

I can't believe I used to shoot concerts with a Canon 10D at ISO 3200.
The IQ was never great but they still remind me of some great concerts.

Some pictures I took in september 2010 for a friend. He organised a concert for local bands to raise money for our local baseball team.
The lighting engineer was terrible. Everytime I raised my camera the lights went out. But sometimes I got some nice effects. (well, I hope they are nice )
Than you Art for the reply- Since we last spoke I contacted a TV producer (music related) who is kind enough to let me go learn the ropes and shoot. Im going to work on contacting promoters about shooting as well. Thank you for the guidance

Well they've got me over a barrel since I took it from my seat, not with a press pass. I'm a HUGE fan so this once I'm going for it for the thrill. Next time, if there ever is one, no more freebee. It's very interesting that they don't want you taking photos but they're very happy to use them when you do.
