Hello everyone..
Another advrider here.. I thought I recognized a few names as I was lurking around today
I'm a photo n00b, although I did take a class in the 7th grade
I took a long bike ride last September from Fort Worth to Vancouver BC and I took along a Olympus P&S that I had and let's just say the pics of Big Sur and all the cool places I saw .. well, were just plain crappy. Not to lay all the blame on the camera .. as i'm sure most of it was user error .
But in any event, that is what kicked off my now passion for "trying" to take good shots. So, soon after my trip I picked up my first DSLR a Nikon D50 and have since gotten one other lens and some filters (UV, polarizer..etc)
and am now hoping to get a better % of "good shots".
Here is a shot of my mug taken with the Olympus on said bike ride:
And here is one taken with my D50 - I've heard it's not the camera that makes a good photographer, but a better camera does help
anyway, look forward in contributing and learning a thing or two.
There's something special about taking your own portrait (self-portrait). Anybody can take a photo of you, but only you can do the hard bit about choosing how you want to be seen. It's not that we don't want to see your handsome visages taken by other people, but that we want YOU to shoot them and present them yourselves.
self-por·trait: n. A pictorial or literary portrait of oneself, created by oneself.
Edit: I merged the two "show us your mug" threads.
Ok, I am jumping in with my first post. I have recently selected smugmug to host my photos as I don't have time to figure out how to operate a website of my own. No matter how easy everyone says it is, there are always details for which no reference seems to cover.
I like the idea that this website has a community associated with it. Soon I will post pictures from my wife and I and all the great places we have had a chance to explore. Not quite ready for prime time yet though and I have some questions I will post to the board.
Thanks ahead of time for your patience. My portrait is in my profile.
Hey guys. New here also. Just got a Canon XS so I've been playing around more than I could before, that's for sure. There's a lot you can learn with the limitations of a really cheap compact digital, though.
Little background: I'm an 18 year old dude and I've been into photography for quite a few years, though 'idly'. My main passion is traditional art but I'm hoping to expand my photography skills as well.
A bit less ambiguous...

Hello all
I cannot find a real thread /forum to introduce myself, so hello, here I am. :ivar
I've photographed for most of my life, with the odd break in between, and have been a smugmugger for a long time. Guess now it's time to help with what I know and ask for what I need.
Newb
I wanted to introduce myself, but if I wait until I have figured out how to load a photo onto my post, it will be summer by the time I do this! So please forgive no photo for now - will get to it and learn it as I can. I just signed on with smugmug and love what I see. But I am more than a little intimidated by what seems to be a very high level of super shooters - it is wonderful, but I'm kind of wondering what I've gotten myself into! I read one post while browsing from a woman who says she is a completely non-internet knowledgeable and she asked for help on a subject. Andy replied for her to check a link he posted - and she replied that she always forgets to 'check the wiki'. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "Wiki? What the heck is a wiki????"
Anyway, nice to be here. You can find me at Kara Stewart ... Art in Photography karastewart.net
Hey hey
Just trying to learn a bit and move past snap shots. This is me and my daughter playing with the point and shoot. I've graduated to a better camera but still trying to upgrade my skills.
My photo is on my smugmug page. Right now I'm on my 14 day free trial, but you can see me at fredjclaus.smugmug.com I have been involved in photography for over 30 years. My father started the company when I was a kid, and I took over after his passing in the 1980's.
Can't seem to get my photo to attach, but that's ok. You can see my photo at fredjclaus.smugmug.com
My name is Frederick Claus. I am a commercial photographer in Western New York. Right now I'm using the 14 day free trial of smug mug and learning all that I can. I really want to use your services for my photography company. Trouble is, I closed the business a couple years ago and just re-opened it. Now, I'm working on a 0 budget trying to build it from scratch. Not sure I will be able to keep the site after the 14 days, but I will be coming back to purchase the Pro service and possibly use Smugmug to host my site.
Currently while I'm trying to build the business, I live on Grand Island, NY with my wife and 3 small children. I work as a visual merchandiser to pay the bills and build my photography business on the side. My goal is to get the company back to where it was before I had to close it. One can only hope.
Anyway, I'm happy to help anyone I can if you have questions I can answer. Happy shooting everyone and Nice to meet you.
Me? Blimey, well, ……. ex-pat Scot (east coast, near Edinburgh) now living in deepest darkest Somerset, south west UK. Started out in this here photography malarkey with a Zenith EM back in ’75 (yes, I am that old) then spent many years with 35mm Minolta gear shooting (mostly) B&W and nearly choking to death in an unventilated wet darkroom housed in a blacked out bathroom (great water supply, dodgy electrics) ..….. A bit of a hiatus during the ‘90s (job & family thing, it’s a common story) then was swept along in the digital Tsunami when, in 2002, I traded all my 35mm gear for a Nikon Coolpix 5700, then promptly spent 9 moths wishing it was a DSLR. I now use Canon gear (a ‘long in the tooth' 20D at the mo) and various lenses (primes & zooms). I'm a Canon man simply due to an accident of timing, when the 10D became the first DSLR within reach of the am-tog.
I suppose I’d describe myself as a keen enthusiast for many years, with a day job to pay the bills and an occasion togging commission to keep it interesting. I don’t specialise in any particular area so ‘general photography’ would be the word but I suppose I take more landscapes than anything. Lately I’ve been getting into band & gig photography …. mostly because I’m a aging rocker at heart
I’ve played around with my own web site for a couple of years but decided that life’s just way toooo short to waste time on that so here I am, adopting Smugmug as my web home and dgrin as my font of all knowledge
Afraid I haven’t got a shot of my mug but have included one from earlier this year sneakily taken by the current Mrs daveb on her little Sony silver-box-slim line-compact-thingy. We were in NW Wales and I was photographing HarlechCastle, catching the evening light, before retiring to the pub for a pint or three
I'm a 63 year old female Lab Manager for the forensic drug lab in Delaware. My passions in life include bicycles, photography, writing, Philadelphia Colonial history, my furbabies (Dachshund and German Shepherd), and too many other things that I don't have time for.
Favorite subjects for photography: street photography, macro, landscape, abstract.
It is LOVELY to find such a friendly group of avid photographers. I'm struggling with RAW conversion, PE 7, getting used to the new camera; but oh my but I'm having fun.

For better, or worse, here's my mug (well, profile of my mug anyway). Used my 20D, 10-22mm, tri-pod and cable release which is out of the photo in my right hand.
