Just found this really neat looking nature conservatory near Calgary - any interest in booking a hike there? Would be on our full day in Canmore/Kananaskis - could do early morning or late day? (revised my POV from doing this our travel day)

Just thought I would let folks know that, according to skippy, there are 81 more sleeps!!!!

Tom and Maureen have had work get in the way of this shootout (in the form of a trip to Norway!!!) and so there will just be the four of us from Canmore on now. Too bad. Tom and I met in Edmonton last weekend and he would have fit in with us very well.

Unfortunately, too many conflicting university commitments kept being added to the Fall semester schedule. The invitation to Norway at the end of the summer was the tipping point for us and the possibility of going to the Glacier workshop already was seeming less and less likely.

Pre-planning for the Canadian side of this trip looks great and the Glacier workshop itself looks incredible. I'm sorry to be missing this but I know somehow you'll get by without useek7.gif and have an awesome time.wings.gifI'll keep my ear to the ground for the Ozzie sleeps-to-go report .

Beth and I want to fly into Bozeman the friday before and head down to yellowstone for a couple days but we're concerned that some pass may get snowed in and we couldn't drive up, is this a possibility? We're not really sure how to find out the conditions during that time of year.

That's a good question, as Nightingale and I are driving the whole way to Glacier from Indiana. I doubt that the roads will be closed that early in the season, but that far north and that high I could be wrong.

Anyone with a little local knowledge of the passes in northern Montana?

I just bought a new pair of hiking boots. Now I just have to use them and get in shape. I'l really getting lazy lately. I haven't been out shooting in over a month. Sunday I'll be going out with my friend Frank to a local Osprey nest. So what do I need to bring that I wouldn't think of? Any suggestions Ann? I've never been to that part of the country before and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm used to the cold, just look at my avatar. I think it was around -10 when I took that and we were on the ice all day long. I'm sort of dreading packing warm clothes and a winter jacket. It's so much easier to pack shorts and tee shirts.

    Cold ??? eek7.gif what's that ??? rolleyes1.gif just joking,
I know what cold is, just not that kind of cold your used to.
I've had to buy Thermal long johns, thermal undershirts, thermal socks, and thermal gloves,
cause I know I feel the cold something shocking.

I've already broken my hiking boots in by just wearing them to work,
and making sure I wear them on the weekends as well.

Got myself a water/wind proof jacket, and and and I got meself some new jamas I did,
I did rolleyes1.gif with polar bears on them even nod.gif

I have to pack for hot and cold too Nick, cause I'm spending a bit of time in San Francisco,
and maybe Disneyland as well on the way back home.

Poor Nicks gonna have Cabin fever for sure by the time this Adventure is over rolleyes1.gif

I wonder if Andy's gone as far as eating Vegemite in his new diet.
I think I have cabin fever right now and it's summer. I need to go on a trip. The only place I get to go before the trip is Lake Delava for a wedding in August. That should be fun but I'll only be there for a couple days.

I already have some polar jammies, so I can match Skippy. :p

    Jasper weather

    Banff weather

I suggest being prepared with clothes that you can layer, a good wind/waterproof jacket and possibly rain pants too.
    gloves
winter hat (toque) or headband, just in case

WRT jackets: I will bring a polar fleece and a (yet to be determined) jacket for over it, as well as my down jacket just in case.

I have a van and a toule rooftop carrier. We can bring lots of stuff, if you can bring it on the plane.

This is a tricky time of year.

We're bring everything from shorts to down jackets.
We'll have a regular suit case with normal clothes, and a bin in the back of the van with the warm clothes.
As long as things don't get crazy, like below 0 degrees F. us "northerners" don't have much to fear.

I think the worst thing would be if the winds kick up on a cooler day. It's times like that, that a warm scarf, hat and gloves become your best friend.

Wow ...... I just went through a storage box I have and found some treasures my mother made me years ago clap.gif

Mum made me a scarf, a neck warmer, a hat, and double thickness mittens from polar fleece, and I've never ever had to use them.

    So I'm packing them :D
I'll go to Rays Tent City and see if they have some water proof pants.

So, the preshootout leaves Edmonton September 18 at about 1p.m. from the airport. That is when Nick (gluwater)and Christina (phyxius) arrive - same flight from Chicago.

There are only the 4 of us so far. The place in Canmore will have lots of space (sleeps 10). I have two different accomodations booked in Jasper, to accomodate different sized groups.

I still haven't finalized bookings in Waterton.

The limiting factor right now is transportation - if you can rent your own vehicle, then there is no problem joining us.

<60 sleeps? Oy! better get my butt in gear!

I will hope for sun, but plan for everything! You should want a bit of snow on the mountains, I'd think - adds to the photos, for sure.

That's why you need to practice up on shooting panos! thumb.gif Especially in Glacier, it is just impossible to take everything in without shooting a pano, IMO.

BTW, there is a saying in Montana (lots of places, I'm sure). "If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes". :D I think you all will experience a little bit of everything, from sunshine to rain to snow. It should make for some incredible pictures!
