Great photos Brett. For asthetics, I'd prefer a little margin between the bottom of the slideshow and the social icons. Everything seems bunched together at the bottom - just my opinion.

Your homepage is lovely and inviting but there are some problems beyond that. It may helpful to log out of smugmug and then navigate to your site so you can see what I mean:
When I click on a link on a navbar, it does not really take me to anything. What I get to is a page that looks like it has a faded out background(?) image but no other photos.
Get out of the thinking of legacy smugmug! Your about me page is an example of this. The content is fine, but unlike the legacy smugmug, you don't need to fake it by creating a gallery and then adding text to the gallery description. Instead, go to Organize>Create>Create Page.In the Title call it About Me and then click create. Now go to the Organizer and navigate your way to the page you just created. You may have to open up folders to find the page. Once you find the page (in the left panel), click on the page. You ill get something in the middle telling you to click to go to the page. Go to it. Now up on the top bar click customize> and you should see an option for page settings. Click it. Now add your photo and then a text box with your about me text. Then change the link on the about navbar to point to this page or delete the one you made and create a new one; either way should give you the option to navigate to the page. That way you don't have to come up with code to get rid of the thing that says this gallery is empty!

Hi Derek, thanks for the compliment. I think what you are trying to accomplish is opening the image to lightbox not a gallery? Thats fairly simple I think. When you are in customize hover over the wrench on the "homepage" section and change the "action on click" dropdown to lightbox.

Also I think you have a great logo, using it alone I think is plenty. Your name that large distracts from your branding, I would remove it completely. Having your logo along with your nav bar all in one line would give it a cleaner look and feel. Also when clicking your logo it takes you to a blank page.

Your homepage is very effective; unfortunately the tiny video (with noise!) that pops up in the middle of the screen ruins it for me. (Web sites with unsolicited sound is a trigger for me to close the page.) Have you considered only showing your background on the homepage (with nothing else)?
Your blog and information pages open in new browser tabs. I clicked to your blog, then clicked Website to return to your page. That opened yet another tab and it wasn't the site that I started from. I'd recommend cleaning up the links. Also, make sure you know your viewers before you start propagating browser tabs or pages that weren't requested by the viewer. If a site starts opening new pages that I didn't ask for I usually close the page.
I don't know if your menu entries are cut off or if you used "infor" as a shortcut for information. I think either spelling it out or using "info" would be better.

It's probably the same color in both places but seeing it against the white at the top of the page makes it feel too dark to me. (Then again, that's probably just me - I've never been fond of dark backgrounds. Feel free to ignore!)

I can view everything using IE or Firefox, but in Chrome when I click anything from your Galleries menu entry I am taken to an essentially blank page. Your header is there (logo and menu), the breadcrumb is showing. Below the breadcrumb I see the word Galleries and nothing else.
The other thing that jumped out at me is that you have your email address as text on many pages. That's a good way to attract spam (from a spambot harvesting email addresses from pages). Have you considered using the smug contact form? Or a Wufoo form?

Thanks Denise, I'm not sure what's going on with Chrome, it's having the same issue in safari on the Mac. It was fine earlier today but now it's not. If you go down to the lower level gallery it seems to be ok, jut the higher levels are not showing. (http://www.digi-scapes.com/Architecture/Architecture) I've never tried Wufoo, and I'm not a fan of the SM form but I may create my own form but I'm not sure yet. So far I've not received any SPAM but that's not to say I won't. Is there any benefit to not displaying the email as text and rather have it as an embedded link similar to the Facebook and twitter links on my "about me" page?

I finally decided on a look for my new SmugMug site. I tried many looks from full screen slide shows to one large image. I came up with a two slide show look, not sure if having two small slide shows is a bit too much. My site is just for family and friends.

Yes, I third Denise's recommendations especially with regards to the small (but very loud if your sound is up) video. It makes me want to leave the page as quickly as I can. Maybe a slideshow or static images would come across a bit more subtle and inviting. The photos themselves are very nice.

Personally do not like the font and color choice, but that is a personal branding decision that you should keep if you love it. My only comment is you need to shut off the smugmug header.

on my 27" screen the slideshow on the right is smaller than the one on the left. On smaller screens it seems to resize to match so you may not have noticed.
Also, realized you are from RI when I looked through your pics, I was down at Beavertail last week! Love that place.

Simple, clean, nice way to showcase some lovely images. I don't think that the owl next to your banner addsmuch and would suggest deleting it. Not sure what you mean by upgrade the url?
I find the switch between a side menu on the homepage and a top menu on subsequent pages to be a bit jarring. Have you considered using one or the other site-wide?
You have a contact link in your menu but you have placed your email address in clear text on your homepage. To avoid spambots, don't include an email address in clear text.
