    Hi Doug, glad you made it here!

    I've been in the BMW scene for about 4 years now, ever since I could drive.

    I’m currently finishing a 2 year business degree, and then I will be attending UTI next fall. After that I plan on doing the BMW STEP program. Will you guys have any employment opportunities in a few years?

    Now onto my car. I have a 1994 530i 5-speed (m60b30) which is currently getting new head gaskets. I already have the full suspension and SSK for it, but I would like to pick up a few extra goodies for it to make it a little more spunkier. I plan on buying the Conforti chip from Turner. Do you have any Dyno’s of my car with that chip in it? I was also wondering if you make CAI’s for my engine. I think there are some out there for the 4.0L, but I’m not sure about the 3.0L. They are basically the same engine, but you never know. Do you offer any other upgrades I should check out?

    Hahaha, YES! I once saw a guy in one of those European market only econoboxes circle the block (well...the area actually) until he finally found a space, only to yell SCHEISS (or however you spell it) when he realized on both sides of his car the door could only be cracked open.

    I was thinking Richard. Your V8 is a 4.2L, right? And you only put out ~170hp.


    In the same generation of cars, BMW used a 3.5L I6 that put out ~180hp :ivar

    Naw, mine is a 3.8liter. Hey, MB was just doing their part to help reduce oil use and help the environment. 3700lb car that's big enough to hold 5 6ft adults and gets about 18mpg mixed driving on 87 octane...now that it has 155,400 miles on it (back in the day it got more like 20...which considering the technology available was pretty darn impressive). Even after 20 years, on the emissions tests my car barely registers on the emissions testing machine (thanks to the insanely restrictive catalytic converters).
    Also...let's look at a 21 year old BMW, and then look at a 21 year old MB, which one is more luxurious, creak-free, better engineered, better in a crash test, and using higher quality parts. Honestly (and consider that my dad, who owned 2 2002's back when they were new and a Bavaria back when it was new, agrees with me on this), until the E39 5 series BMW could not even compare to MB.

    So I hate to break up the whole bmwthingy but I was thinking of getting
    some new wheels for my A4.

    I'm looking for something with maybe a 1/2-1" lip. Not having too much
    luck mostly cause I've never looked for wheels before and have no idea of
    the brands, etc.

    Any advice?

    You keep mentioning how superior the e39 is, which I have to disagree. The BMW community agrees that the e39 and other later BMW’s weren’t built nearly as well as previous BMW’s, like the e30, e34, ect.

    One other thing, MBZ’s didn’t offer standard tansmissions on nearly all of their cars, which in my mind is a huge down side.




    BMW’s also offer a much wider aftermarket of parts and tech support.


    Maybe we shouldn’t get into the MBZ vs. BMW argument though…

    BBS always look great. Search for some BBS LM’s, they’re my favorite. Be prepared to spend lots of bucks though!

    Well...are you more of a looks guy or a functional guy? If you've got money and you want function, make sure whatever you get is light and forged.
    Lip isn't really something you just kinda look for, typically it's the result of a specific wheel offset, and only certain offsets work with a certain car (and don't count on tirerack's wheel configurated to have the proper specs, they use spacers of all sizes to make wheels work, but even with good quality hubcentric spacers you don't want to use a very big spacer).
    What size wheels do you have on there right now? And what do you find lacking about you current wheel/tire/suspension setup?

    People on the forums don't like the e39's because they don't like computers and they don't like needing $15,000 Siemens machines to work on their cars...I say tough. Also, people on the net for some reason think rack and pinion is better than recirculating ball. Look at the leather used in an E34 compared to the leather used in a E39. Maybe it's just that my grandfather was a textile engineer, but I can tell immediately how comparatively junky the leather is in the E34. Look at the wiring, looks at the level of technological advancement (when did BMW start using silicone impregnated blocks? 4 wheel independant suspension?) Also, every old BMW I've been in (old meaning older than 15 years) squeaks...good cars don't squeak. Finally, BMW didn't bring their emphasis on safety up to MB's speed until lately.

    Manual transmissions v automatics...that's a personal call...personally I don't think any car with 4 doors should have an automatic (though I should note there are plenty of manual MB's, they are just all in east Europe).

    Aftermarket parts is not a good thing. There actually are plenty of aftermarket companies making Benz parts...there's good reason not to use them. For modifying parts, 1 - real men do custom 2 - there's plenty of stuff, just only known by those in the know. But what is aftermarket tech support?

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-BMW. One day I'll get an M635csi.

    This is not entirely true. Although most do agree that E39s+ are worse off than cars prior to the E39, the "community" that "agrees" on this are about 80% (if not higher, like 99%) owners of older BMWs. If you ask me, BMWs share a lot of problems. Older bimmers are just that... old so they of course require special care. E36s are very widely known for door panels just falling off completely. Most of the cars I see at MSR have this problem in fact. Most BMWs have subframe problems, and most have their share of electrical problems. Bill's (my boss) E28 M5 has like 5 lights lit up for no real reason.

    Please don't be biased against newer BMWs, they are built strong, especially considering the new door panels contain a lot more than just a piece of carboard wrapped in leather and a handle screwed in like an E28/E30.

    Like I said, I’ve decided not to argue about it but I’ve had 6 BMW’s and I swear on my father that non of them have squeaked. My ’85 500SEL on the other hand squeaked like it was its job. The suspension, the dash, the seats… Couldn’t get that thing to shut up.

    I am in no way biased against new BMW’s, I just can’t afford them :)

    I think maybe we just have different ideas of what is “better”. A BMW owner thrives on the performance of their car. They love the manual transmissions and sporty suspensions. While the MBZ owners love the comfort and ride quality of their cars.

    Really your 500 squeaked? Was it in an accident or something? The only squeaks I've seen is after about 18-20 years some of the bolts holding down the window regulators get loose, but that's a 2 second fix. The leather, if uncared for, can squeak because it's 2cm thick. If you condition it every 2 years (which is honestly much longer than a person should go without conditioning leather), it's silent. Even abused leather will stop squeaking with an application of Lexol...if only this forum were around when you had that 500, we'd get it fixed up right quick.

    Oh, wait, that was a grey market car...those tend to get abused, mainly because dealers weren't working on them (and the few that did would't honor warrantees), so they got sold early and cheap for the most part to people who didn't care for their cars.

    Only, I would want it to have leather, not a blacked out grill, have the pre-1986 interior, and not all that extra wood.

    Oh, and see that door latch? The spike in hole set up...an accident door anchor...BMW started those what with the E38? :smack

    BTW way Richard, I emailed ESS about the typo on the 530i SC kit and they said it was infact a typo. Makes me feel better now, I was worried it was for the 3.0L I6.
