We're going to see if the dealer will let him drive it for an hour to see if it's a problem (dealer might let this happen, since he let him an I, two 21 year olds, take it out by ourselves and even told us places where we could go fast and test out the handling). My parents have an '02 which is pretty similar, and I've spent a lot of seat time in it, so I really don't think it will be a problem, but he worries that it might be.

    Make him drive his commute in an old P.O.S. one ton pickup. After that he'll think a 996 rides like a Crown Vic.

    I should add he also has a track car Miata (roll cage and all) that he plans to make into a spec-racer. I'm trying to tell him it will be no problem (I've told him how even my mom has driven ours by herself for 4 hours at a time without complaint). We'll see.

    A friend of mine has a 528. He lent it to a friend who put 87 octane in it. It knocks so loud it sounds like a diesel. He needs new spark plugs based on miles, but still shouldn't the knock sensor be able to cope? I guess if the plugs are fouled that no amount of retardation of timing or richening of mixture could solve it. Still has me curious.

    I know Doc plugged this movie once before, but I hadn't seen it until just now, I rented it and watched it. I honestly think Cars is one of the best movies ever made, and I'm something of a movie snob. All the car guy jokes, voices, attention to detail (the Porsche sounds are dead on). I loved it!

    I know Doc plugged this movie once before, but I hadn't seen it until just now, I rented it and watched it. I honestly think Cars is one of the best movies ever made, and I'm something of a movie snob. All the car guy jokes, voices, attention to detail (the Porsche sounds are dead on). I loved it!
    Wasn't me, haven't even seen it. but on that recommendation, maybe i'll on-demand it this weekend.

    It goes well with Surround Sound and a slightly louder volume than you typically listen to btw. I should also clarify that obviously I don't think it's the same quality level as say Lawrence of Arabia, but I did find it of the same enjoyment level.

    "Cars" was a great movie indeed. Amazing graphics, great script and story.

    Back to a prior topic that I started, that of magazines with great car photos. I have since found "American Driver" magazine. www.americandrivermagazine.com. Some really cool photography to go along with some nice photos. Now to find a magazine with good shots of vintage race cars. :)

    It's not awesome until its in the car, and then we'll want videos *drool*

    My fourth set of JE pistons came on Monday and it looks like 4th time was the charm. Now the engine has to be built (should be done today or tomorrow), shipped from NY to ATL, then the conversion has to be done to my car.

    How much does that E34 weigh btw?

    Hmmm...we ought to get to a strip and race one day when my engine is broken in. With the 560 engine I'll be about 3700lbs (3650 with the 380 engine), but I'll also have more power (unknown yet, but 350+ for both hp and torque), though it will be more upper end (6500rpm redline with lumpy cams), but then I don't know how much down low we'll lose considering how overbore this is.
    That could be a close one!

    Since distance is a problem, we could each run them at our local strips. There is one about an hour from my house that has open 1/4 day on Wednesdays.

    Well, we don't know because there will be hook-up problems since we haven't been able to source a proper limited slip diff for it. What I'm going to do is just use the open diff I have until it dies, and he's doing the same on one of his cars where the diff only has a few tens of thousands of miles left in it, and then we're going to put in an order for some custom Quaife units (1 costs $6500, 10 are about 3500 per, and 30 are 1200-2000 depending on some things). If hookup weren't a problem we'd be talking 13.5 or thereabouts (a standard euro 560SEL is about 14.5, and I have the benefit not just of substantially more power, faster shifting, and wider rubber but also I'll be 300lbs lighter).

    Cool. How much is your total project costing, including the car? I will be around $5k into the car after the swap is done.

    By the way, I'm going with a 3.46LSD and it will only cost me about $500 for a rebuilt unit :P


    Since you are adding power, are you upgrading you brakes? I'm upgrading to 850i brakes all around.
