thanks again for all your input. I'm at a bit of a crossroads. My D40 has been deemed unrepairable after sending it in for service via my Best Buy extended warranty.
Good news- I get my original purchase price towards new camera = approx $700.
Bad news- I don't know what to buy.
Best Buy only sells the Canon 50D with a 28-135 lens which I don't want.
I like the Nikon D90 but am worried about the fact that the Nikon D300 and the Canon 50D both are touted as having dust/water resistant capabilities, or words to that effect.
I don't HAVE to buy from Best Buy, I could spend my store credit on a nice flat screen TV.
I would like to stay with Nikon, I COULD swing the D300.
They have a D90 with a 70-300 and a ...18-105 for $1799. Thats with a $629 70-300 lens so pretty good price.
I'm probably overly hung up on the dust/water thing I'm just too damn lazy to take the time to cover up from dust.
But I really would lilke to get D300 and get an 18-200 mm lens.
Anyonoe have any input on the Canon 50D?
I'm thinking at 15mpx its just too damn much. Heck a small jpeg would be over 5meg?
Who knows but its a nice problem to have. The D40 did a heck of a job for the price. Time to move up.
D300 for you sounds right. You should enjoy it immensely.
I'm on a D40X and have been for about 1.5 yrs now. I'm finding myself just now getting more serious with my work and noticing that i want something better. I'd for sure go for the D300 if it were me.
I bought my 70-300 from B&H for $624 so that $629 at best buy is pretty good.
I love my Nikon but playing with the canon's they had was pretty fun. I'd like to use one for a weekend - i'm seeing a rental in the future. Maybe you should try that first??
I've not personally rented from here but i've seen others around here talk about this place. http://www.lensrentals.com/

I started with a D40, got the 70-300 a few months later. Six months in, I got a D300, a month later I got a 70-200. Six months after that I got a D700. Now the D300 sits in the bag just waiting for an opportunity to pinch hit. The only time I use it now is for using my fisheye since that is a DX lens.

Look around and find a good condition used Canon Mark2 or Mark2n
I have 3 and have NEVER had a single problem.
From salt water water craft and boat shoots to -30 degrees on snowmobile ad jobs to dusty MX tracks, they have worked perfect time after time
You can find them for around $1,000 these days and they are the absolute best camera for MX IMO.
Bullet proof, weather sealed, 8 1/2 frames a second awesome auto focus.
8.2 megs is more than big enough for all but major ad work.
Matter of fact we shoot all the MX and sport bike action ads with these cameras.
The posters in the bike shops look pretty dam good coming from a 8.2 meg camera
Check them out before you buy anything else. You will love them!!!

I wanted to stay with Best Buy and get extended warranty. I'm not a big extended warranty believer but I have had them on my last 2 camera's, both of which were replaced.
that and Best Buys 18 month same as cash no interest etc.
So having said that, Saturday I became the proud owner of a Nikon D300 and Nikon 18-200mm lens.
They sent me home with SD Flash and I needed CF card so had to shoot Sunday with the new lens on my sons D80.
thanks for the input on the Canon, but for some reason it came down to brand recognition and I wanted a Nikon.
A few from Sunday with the new lens, some on Sports mode, some on S mode, for some reason the D80 won't do A mode. Who knows..
90% of the worlds professional sports photographers shoot Canon and have for the last 10 years.
What more brand recognition could someone want
now you tell me.
I thought the 50D Canon was "too much" with the 15 mpx and I thought the MK2's were out of my price range.
I also thought the D300 was more of a "sports" specific camera than the 50D due to my interpretation of the data I came across in regards to environment protection from dust/water.
So for me, along with the brand recognition, it was a choice of the D300 over the 50D, (and D90) and not being able to "afford" the MK Canons. Thanks again for all the inputs, now I need to get a flash.
I use Canon but seriously looking at switching to Nikon if i get into
shooting motorsports profesionally, which would be my dream job.
I Should have got into Photography rite after highschool think it would have been my job now.

A few from High Point. Shutter speed was a little to fast for the lower speed areas I was shooting it. I should have dropped it down to get more tire rotation.
Would love to, but two airshows this weekend. Next weekend I plan on being at a dropzone shooting skydivers as they attempt to break their internal record of largest formation jump.
Trust me, you will see me eventually.. Just look for Smugmug straps.
Tell me what you think
These are taken straight from the camera. This was at a local race that we were at. Go ahead and tell me what I can do to take a better picture. This was shot with a Canon rebel Xti with a 70-200 mm 2.8 lens in the Tv setting.
Thanks

welcome to the club to you and to all the other MX photogs who've been joining in the fray. your pictures look pretty darn good to me even in these small sizes I'll bet the look great bigger. we all learn as we go, my next move is to get the SB 900 flash for my new Nikon D300
speaking of which...I've yet to shoot MX with. can't believe this is the 3rd weekend of ownership and still haven't used it.
the weekend I bought it Best Buy had sent me home with a SD memroy card and not a Compact Flash and I didn't realize it until 10 pm Saturday night. So the first Sunday was spent with my new 18-200 lens on my sons D80. The second weekend (last) was spent at an antique motorcycle event as it was a really good show and I NEEDED a break from local MX and the antique bike show was too good to pass up so I did get to use it there for the first time.
And this weekend the scheduled track has already announced today tomorrows race is canceled due to its been raining all week and tommorow is..rain..
So here are a few from last weekends AMCA Grand National meet in Rhinebeck NY complete with Freestyle MX jumpers and a Wall of Death barrel riding show, all included with admission into the meet.
so thanks again to all who've been contributing to the thread. There is MX riders and then there is everyone else. Shooting MX is second only to riding it in my book but at my age it hurts less to shoot it with a camera.

My 40 is very loyal, hasn't broken and has shot some pretty decent stuff. I think it's more a ME issue that needs improving.

It could use a tighter crop, but for some reason I am a sucker for foreground noise
Another one that could use some crop. His visor is a little soft too, but I like it anyway
