    well... when I see the right arrow, I wanna "go that way" which involves scrolling the strip the other way...

    it is easy enough to get used to, that was just my initial/natural expectaion

    Smugmug is backwards from OS scrolling conventions
    Andy wrote:

    Maybe because it's backwards from all Windows and Mac scrolling widgets - probably the most used scrolling paradigm. In those examples, you click on an arrow to see more in that direction, not to make things move in that direction.

    When you look at a scroll bar on a word document, do you think, "I'd like the text to move down, so I'll click the one the down arrow"?

    And i must say, smugmug's filmstrip is kewl. There is just a little mismatch of user intention and screen interaction:

    -Say the images in the strip move to the left.
    -I see an image that is about to disappear on the left side, behind the arrow, or i saw an image before that did disappear on the left a little while ago.
    -My mouse moves towards that image, i.e. my mouse moves to the left. It's almost like trying to catch it before it disappears.
    -When my mouse hits the arrow, the images start scrolling even faster to the left.
    -To retrieve the image, i first have to move to the right arrow, stay there a little while and then to the left again to select the image.

    The last step is a little awkward.

    (I'd suggest putting a right-pointing arrow on the left side and a left-pointing arrow on the right side)
    I can't grasp the notion of time.

    When I hear the earth will melt into the sun,
    in two billion years,
    all I can think is:
        "Will that be on a Monday?"

    I agree that the filmstrip seems backwards, but that's because we've all been tainted by how regular scrollbars work. Technically the filmstrip isn't a scrollbar, but it's similar enough looking (arrows on each end) that we think of it like a scrollbar.

    For user interface perception is reality. If the user thinks it should work like a scroll bar, then it can only be fixed by either:

    1) Making it work like a scrollbar (change feature to match the perception)
    or
    2) Changing the UI of the feature so nobody thinks it should work like a scroll bar (change perception to match the feature).

    Pop-up window size
    Both in IE6 and Firefox the size of the popup window is to small so that both scroll bars appear resulting in a slight need to scroll to see the full image.

    Any response to "Seven problems with preferred viewing size"?
    Andy wrote:
    Hi John,
    I'm not referring to any pop-up window, I'm referring to viewing in SmugMug Style, like you mentioned above. There's no popup when you click on "large" for example in the gallery I linked in my reply..

    Just want to be clear. And also to state that the preferred viewing style dropdown does indeed work, you can change to small, med, etc.

    Now I'll read the res of your above post.

    Andy, I was wondering if there was ever any sort of response to this post (Seven problems with "preferred viewing size"). I went to great detail to try to document where all the inconsistencies are in that popup and it sounds like you were going to read it and think about it, but then the holidays hit and it seems like it just scrolled off the list and the thread continued with all the other things that end up in the bug reporting thread and nothing more about this issue.

    It has not scrolled off the list - JT and Onethumb have seen it. So has our product manager, Ben. When they want to comment and have something relative to say on it, I'm sure they will.

    Thanks again for taking the time to make that post, and this one. It's really very valuable feedback - and we appreciate it.

    John,
    I would like to thank you for the time you put in to that post, it is very obvious that you spent a lot of time thinking about every aspect of the problem. We have not overlooked the post, but have been working on other things since the holidays were over. I will bring up the points you made with everyone and we will see what can be done about it. No promises though on if and when any changes will be made :)

    Thanks for the update. I just wanted to make sure the thinking didn't get lost and at least got looked at (which it sounds like it has). In the end, it's up to you to prioritize it relative to the other things you are working on.

    To John, and Everyone: The reason we have the bug reporting thread and the features request thread, is so that everything is conveniently located. Nothing gets missed, lost, or not read - we promise you that.

    Thanks again.

    bug or feature?
    It is known (and commonly a complaint) that when you go to sort galleries, ALL (153 in my case) your galleries are displayed, not just the ones in the category you are working on.

    But I was very surprised to see that when I was viewing a SUB-category, I hit organize galleries and only the galleries IN THAT sub-category were displayed! wow.
    clap.gif
    This was category FAMILY, and a sub-category BIRTHDAYS
    51745466-D.jpg
    I was afraid to actually sort them here since I have all my galleries sorted in such a way that I like my homepage and I don't want that messed up.

    I thought maybe you guys had just recently enhanced the gallery sort feature, but I tried gallery sort from a CATEGORY and all 153 galleries were displayed. :cry

    just an FYI at this point

    Recently I noticed that feeds are listed as google search results - they are sometimes even shown as top result and as the only result with a clickable link attached in order to show other hits.
    I noticed this with keywords only - Example

    The odd thing is that in the English google the feed isn't listed first - same example.

    My point in posting this in the bug thread is that feeds shouldn't be allowed being indexed by google or is there a logic behind to do this?

    Thanks,

    Geography data lost when photo is copied
    Hi

    Today I noticed a small bug. I'm copying several of my geotagged pictures to a single site and I noticed that upon doing a "Make 2nd copy" the geographic data is lost.
    The other data like caption is preserved so I guess this is a bug

    What happened to the html-code parser for the gallery description when browsing through global smugmug galleries?
    My 'New Year's eve 2005/2006' gallery in friends does have this as the image-alt-tag for it's thumb:
    alt="New Year's eve 2005/2006 : <html><span class=ger>Silvester 2005/2006</span><img src=&quot;http://rainhome.de/tracking/silvester05.gif&quot; width=0></html>"

    The source code for displaying the titel and description of the gallery is even worse:
    <TABLE cellSpacing=5>
    <TBODY>
    <TR>
    <TD class=headmd><A href="<A href="http://rainforest1155.smugmug.com/gallery/1098146">New">http://rainforest1155.smugmug.com/gallery/1098146">New Year's eve 2005/2006</A> </TD></TR>
    <TR>
    <TD class=headmd><SPAN class=ger>Silvester 2005/2006</SPAN><IMG src="[URL="http://rainh"]http://rainh[/URL] ...&nbsp;                                    </td>                                </tr>                                <tr>                                    <td>                                    <em class=" note?>Updated: Jan 15, 2006 4:56pm PST</EM>&nbsp; </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

    You filtered the <html>-tag, but there's still a complete span-tag and a corrupt img-tag, which wasn't parsed out.

    Currently the gallery is on this position in the global friends category.
    Hope you can find the little bugger as it for sure affects more than only my one gallery.

    Andy, I did now try some combinations - 05-06 instead of using the slash, removing the apostrophe, removing my span-tag. I ended up leaving out 2006. But the gallery description is still not parsed correctly, always leaving my img-tag and span-tag in there. ne_nau.gif

    I can tell by looking at the source code that the browse page has not been updated to the new css and code, so all bets are off when galleries are viewed from there :)

    I will add it to the list of pages that need updating.

    Empty Cart bug?
    I noticed that if you empty your cart there is no link that I can find to go back to viewing pictures. Seems to me there should be a "continue shopping" button to go back to the gallery where the user was last browsing. Or am I missing something?

    I take this as a it's not worth messing around with the old code. That's fine with me as it's no pressing matter for me.

    Not able to organize galleries
    I tried to do what the FAQ says. I clicked on the sort by position, instead of the organize tool coming it takes me to the Category page i.e. one level up. This doesnt look right. What am I doing wrong or is there something wrong with the tool ?

    hmmm...i'm getting similar behavior. I can click the "by position" link on my categories box on my homepage and i get the "organize" option. however when i click "by position" on any of my category pages, it just reloads the page without switching to actually being organized by position.

    i'm moving this over to the bug reports thread.

    Not a bug, as near as I can tell. You first have to click on "position" for categories, too.. THEN you can organize subcats by position :D.. try it?
