Sorry I don't think that would fly in this thread. 98% of us are either European or Japanese car fans.
Bah, you can like two types. I say two because I don't know anybody who likes 3. American for the muscle and German for the build...the japanese can keep their fwd (yes yes I know all about Audi...leave me alone).
American muscle cars are lacking in handling, and power to weight ratios.
Lacking in power to weight? A WS6 firebird has a 1hp:10.2lb power to weight ratio. That's a lot better than the power to weight of a 300zx (not to metion with $5,200 one can pretty easily put on a vortech and make the firebird have a 1hp:7lb power to weight ratio. That's better than the power to weight of a 997 Porsche turbo.

yeah but if it handles like crap. The only good american muscle cars I have been in have had their suspensions totally redone, upgraded, customized, you name it (adjustable shocks and struts, urethane bushings all the way around, strut bars, etc). And alot of money went into doing that. Most japanese cars handle fairly well off the showroom floor without modifications. Most american cars (camaro is one we have tested alot) are sloppy off the showroom floor. But then again part of that is the baka american's and their wanting everything to be smooth and soft and handle like a boat.
Oh and a WS6 isn't your run of the mill firebird straight off the showroom floor is it? I believe it was a special package.
Oh and a WS6 isn't your run of the mill firebird straight off the showroom floor is it? I believe it was a special package.
Yeah, it was a special package, but it was straight off the showroom floor. Also, it's fairly common and you can buy late year ones (like 2001's) for under $20k. Any of the ones you see with the four nostrile intake is a ws6. I should add that even the non-ram air firebirds with the 5.7 only had 15 less hp and 10 less lb-ft, though the ws6 has the added benefit of a nicely setup suspension system. I mean, so it doesn't have Porsche handling, but it'd do somewhere around .88g on the skidpad.
I think some of the new 'merican cars are pretty cool. Like the Mustang and
this year's Charger and let's not forget the GTO. Styling wise, they're nice to
look at though none (except maybe the Mustang) are as compelling to me as
the original cars.

Didn't mean to start a rivalry. But since one's been started...
I believe that others have already pointed out the "lack of knowledge" in the above statement. I was referring to stock for stock comparisons (in the $15k to $20k market). Aftermarket is another thing, as you could spend enough money to make a Yugo fly around the world:lift, if you wanted to.
Now lets be serious, maybe somebody could pull the stats. of a 4th gen. Z28, and compare them with any of the cars that I previously inquired upon. Concerning lateral G's, acceleration, braking, slalom, and even gas mileage (can we add in there "coolness factor":):). I know the 95' TA that I used to own, got 26mpg on the freeway (w/87 octane). Sure, it bled fuel when I stepped on it, but that chirp going into 3rd gear was worth it!
Kind of a parallel between this discussion and the P&S vs DLSR debate, if you think about it. Anyways, just having fun. Any car is better than hitchhiking.
You didn't offend, but ya ain't much on reading, are ya? And the rest of you jumped on that bait like a flock of starving seagulls!
There was one glaring omission in that entire sh*tstorm that just trasnpired. But since Bubba isn't here to point out the obvious, I will: It ain't 'merican vs import, he drives a Ford Ranger now and loves it - and btw, you can put that in first gear and put both feet on the floor in front of the pedals, and it'll go over logs, uphill! do that in your TA!
Bubba was soliciting discussion on a practical car to do his new long commute in, but that still retains some cargo hauling ability, hence all the hatches and mini-wagons he's looking at. TA may be the same money, but you have capacity for 2 people and maybe a case of beer. Not that you could fit much more because you'll be spending the rest of the money stopping for gas all the time.

You kidding doc? Maybe it's only room for 2, but there is a heck of a lot of cargo space in there. And the mpg is 19 city 28 hwy.

Thank you my friend.. I was about to point that very same thing out about the Ranger and 1st gear. Hell, w/ some careful clutch work I can get all the way up to 4th w/o touching the accelerator. A few months ago, just for kicks, I managed to drive from my office to my apartment (~3 miles away) through city surface streets w/o touching the go pedal whatsoever.. I have no idea what inspired me to do that.. but ol' truckzilla did it! ... And to think, people complain about the new SOHC engine and long for the 'good ol' days' w/ the torquey OHV engines..
That said, I did prep this post in another window, so I might as well tack it on here:
Why not take the money (that would be spent to buy one of those cars), and just by a 4th gen. TA or Camaro, instead?
Bah! A Trans-frickin' Am?! No thanks! They even make those anymore?!? Naw, I'll pass. My concerns are (in order) reliability, economy, utility, and then maybe we start to think of performance. TA's and Camaro's fail on both the economy and utility points, if not the reliability point as well.. This is a daily driver folks. Like I said, I just wanna get to work. If the drive in is somewhat 'spirited', all the better!
And I've yet to drive an American car that I liked. Trucks yeah, cars no.
Lastly, I'm a Ford guy.. once had a Buick and you won't catch me dead in a GM product, never ever again!
You kidding doc? Maybe it's only room for 2, but there is a heck of a lot of cargo space in there. And the mpg is 19 city 28 hwy.

Seriously?!@ Who's kidding who? Have you ever really tried to put anything in a TA? I have. It ain't fun. there may be surface area back there, but there's no height at all, and nevermind access to it. You have to lift the load very very high to get it in there. Think bicycles and boxes, not golf clubs.
Show me a TA that will average even 23mpg and I'll give you a medal.

So, what, you want me to take photo of my friend's car or something? It's a Formula, but it's got the 5.7. Also...bicycles belong on bike racks, not in cars.
Also...bicycles belong on bike racks, not in cars.
That attitude is exactly why a TA is not for me..
Just for background: A co-worker of mine recently aquired himself the WRX he had been lusting over for years. He brought it by to show off. I gave it a once over, turned to him and asked "Looks great, so when are you gonna slap a hitch on it?" He was appalled. ... Like I said, utilitarian.

Bubba,
My apologies. I guess I should've researched a little bit further back, before I jumped in. The TA definetly doesn't register, as a utility type. But you gotta admit, they're pretty cool.
Was quite surprised to draw as much "foam" from some, as I did. Was truly trying to have fun, but yet keep it civil.
Anyways, I too appreciate utility. This is my trusty RAM...

Would anyone else like to help me in starting a fund for Spike to go on a short retreat? I fear his perception of reality is slipping.
I have racked my brain, but TA Formula (no less) and practical go together about as well as oil and water.
Nice truck! My uncle is an independant wrench turner down in Florida. He keeps telling me that if I wanted a 'real truck' I should have gone for a Ram full-size like that. Says they are by far the full-size he sees the least of. ... I might have looked at them back in '03 when I was truck shopping, but they're just so damned expensive! In the end I ended up in an '03 Ford Ranger for a song.

I didn't say it was a Trans Am Formula. I said it's a Firebird Formula, but a Formula with the 5.7 is going to be the same mileage wise as a trans am, and my friends Formula with the 5.7 can get 23mpg...so what do I have to do to get that medal?
Oh, and the best thing about going to a college that affiliates itself with a church is we get a 4 day weekend for Easter, so I got a short little retreat home coming up this weekend.
Only a few more weeks what? Also...anybody here interested in buying some good car care stuff? Now that I don't have my car at school any longer, I have no need for it. Sheepskin wash mitt, one grand blitz wax (best wax there is for a car that's parked outdoors), a P21S drying towel, P21S gloss enhancing paintwork cleanser, P21S bodywork conditioning shampoo, and some One Grand ERV dressing (you can check the prices on all this stuff on www.carcareonline.com, basically it's either the dumpster, one of my friends who doesn't really care about keeping the outside of his cars nice for free, or someone on here if someone is willing to pay me something for it.

Tell you what, you don't have to send me any proof, just send me this stuff and I'll send out your medal.
Hey Doc we have another drive this weekend. Want to come?
Almost missed this... I rode motorbikes the entirety of this past weekend, so I have to catch up on some springtime home-owner duties this coming weekend.
that, and there's that whole Easter family dinner thing.
