I have not used them but have seen http://www.lensrentals.com mentioned here before. The prices are far cheaper than K&S. The 500 f/4 will cost you $660 for 30 days versus $2,250 at K&S. Not sure if that means their lenses are in bad condition, but the cost differential makes it worth investigating.
That is insane for a rental. I know the lens is expensive but man that hurts the pocket book....
It is pretty expensive but not really out of line with other rental costs (like
electronic equipment).
I'm pretty sure K&S would discount the rental rate for a 30 day rental.
Never hurts to ask.
And for a 30d rental, you might also consider buying one then selling it after
you're done. You probably won't lose money when compared to the rental
rate, insurance and shipping costs.

Bump to remind y'all about the balance due by 5/15. If you have not received an email from me with the amount due, make sure you contact me, as I've sent emails out to everyone notifying them.

I bought a ~$1000-range lens for a two-week trip and sold it soon after, with a $50 difference or so. WAY under what I'd pay for a rent.
Is there anyone out there, couples, especially, who would like to upgrade their Glacier lodging to the top tier? It would mean some extra cash, but you'd be getting the nicest rooms. It will be an extra $270 total for the two of you for the entire trip. This is a 2 person West Lodge room.
I updated the list of who's coming, took off some drop-outs and just made sure it's up to date.
We have two openings, and two people on the waitlist that I've sent out emails to find out if they're still interested.
If they take the two remaining spots, I'd still lay odds that more will drop out, so getting on the waiting list is a good idea if you want to come!
EDIT: One closer inspection, I uncovered 2 available spots for the shootout. If you want in, you're in! Just see the information in the first post of the thread.

Thanks David! I'm glad you enjoyed them, and I hope that you all enjoy your visit to the park as much as I do! I'll be there at the beginning of July for a few days, and I'm hoping to add some more pictures to my stack.
I'm a tad confused. Does the money we sent in cover the lodging, or do we need to arrange this ourselves? Help me out, I'm a tad thick.
You've paid for your lodging, and it's all taken care of. There are a couple of other small things in there: your share of the rental of a meeting room, for example.
But, you show up, and your room will be waiting for you, all pre-paid. Everything else will be coming out of your pocket (transportation, food, drink, etc.)

Kool. thanks for the info. Now I'm off to figure out how to get there from Kalispell.
Kool. thanks for the info. Now I'm off to figure out how to get there from Kalispell.
I'm renting a car and driving from Kalispell to St. Mary. I get in late on Sept. 24, set out for St. Mary on Sept. 25 and return to Kalispell crack-of-dawn-early on Sept. 30.
You and anyone else are welcome to join me for the trip.
I don't know if anyones been watching, but it looks like a MAJOR road closing in Glacier is going to really cramp the Dgrinner's style.
Part of "Going To The Sun" road is basically going to be shut down on Sept, 17th. This was going to be a main artery for the group. (or at least for me)
I hope someone is on this, and formulating a plan to what is open and accessible.
Don't want to cry wolf, but this really sucks.
To get to the west side of the park will take hours.
I really wanted to drive GTTS! Maybe we'll luck out.
I don't think there is much homework to do. If you fly in to Kalispell, you take GTTS or US2 to get to St. Mary. Or...you rent a helicopter
The drive around Glacier is about the same time as the drive across according to Google Maps...approximately 110 miles, 2 hours. However, the speed limit in Montana is 75, which means you can do about 85 and get away with it likely and make really good time.

Time for a rental car upgrade to a Mustang!
True, but it will change some of the times that you might leave in the morning to get to some places.
The 1/2 hour drive to the "Tunnel" just became a 2 hour drive.
I'm not sure if I believe the mileage that mapquest is giving out either.
I know Marc is aware of this. He's offline for about a week right now, but I'll make sure that he sees this and shares what he already knows and/or plans to do about this.

If you do not remember what your balance payment is, then send me an email, and I'll get you squared away.

Yes, a lot of post processing.
But seriously. The wife and I are driving out to Glacier via the Tetons and Yellowstone. On the way back we may hit Devils Tower and the Badlands.
We're just hoping not to be to worn out by the time we get to Glacier.
At the end of the shoot-out, the weather may be a factor in the rockies.
That's why we're hitting the other parks first.
