Just curious-- hadn't seen this thread before-- but is there a camping option? Yeah, yeah-- I know all about Montana in late September. I'm no stranger to snow camping.
Just curious if there's a discount if I don't need lodging?
We're planning on a lot of activities that would require you to be centrally located with the rest of the group, so we've decided that you're either with us, or agin us.
Lodging is not very expensive, under $350 on the low end, for 5 nights.
Feel free to post, PM or email me if you have any specific questions.
Yeah, it's not the cost of the lodging-- I actually prefer camping to staying in hotels in places like Glacier (and just outside the parK). And since St. Mary's is surrounded by public lands and campgrounds, figured I'd ask. If you're not familiar with that area, it's easy to camp and still be in the vicinity for the workshops.
I think the camping option should be considered for smugmug workshops in the future-- especially ones in and around Nat'l Parks. I've spent a lot of time up near Glacier (went to college in Spokane)-- that's why I asked. Believe me-- I've tried hostels, motels, and hotels in that area-- but I'll still take a night (or a week) under the big sky of Montana over the indoors (especially in September!).

I'm trying to get my head around my planning for this trip (I'm a little OCD, I do things like this a little early). Do you have a rough idea/schedule of events for the first and last days? I'm trying to figure out what days I will be traveling.
Or, did I miss something to this effect in this thread (after having read it three times now)?

The plan right now is that both the first and last days are 1/2 days. IOW, arrive on the first, and we'll get together in the afternoon/evening. The evening, especially, we'll be talking about our plans for the next morning.
The last day is your travel day, and you can leave anytime you wish. We'll be shooting in the morning, but it will be more informal, since many will be just leaving that morning without shooting.

Make sense?
That's about what I figured, but it's nice not to have to guess. Thanks.

Also, you're closest too me (I think) of the people going. I've been trying to find options that are fast, fun, and not horribly expensive. So far I'm thinking of flying out of BWI or Dulles, to Spokane and then taking the train the last 6 hours to West Glacier. I'm not sure yet if that's even feasible since I'm not sure what transportation options are from West Glacier to the Lodge.
It looks to be about $600 roundtrip flight from BWI to Kalispell. Or $300 to roundtrip BWI to Spokane and $80 round trip train from Spokane to West Glacier. So, it doesn't look like I'd be saving too much, but it could be a nice scenic trip.
I just sent the deposit in for one person (that would be me).
I have a question, my wife may want to come along for a few days (she's not a photographer)- does this mean we have to send in two deposits? I'm assuming the rooms will be $5-600. Is that the same for double occupancy?

Yes, two deposits. And Dave will have to let you know if we have the room for another person....
I know I missed the Jan 15th due date by a long shot, but is it too late to sign up? Is there still room? (for two? (and a dog?))
Tyler, it sounds like Skippy's friend is not coming, so that makes one space. And there's a good chance that another space will open up. I would wager that a few might even open up. So yes, there's still space. Email me via the address in the sign-up thread and we can work out the details.

Would do, but I just realized that I will be in Tokyo on business during the time of the shootout. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one, and I'll even sign up on time. Thanks though!
Payment: Is in two installments. The first payment ($250 per person) is due by January 15th, and the balance (TBD) is due by May 15. Deposits are refundable up until May 15, 2007. Once you have paid your full balance you have bought your room. We can help you find a "taker" if your plans change, but there is no money back after May 15. Payments are made via PayPal, to dsrshops at mac dot com. Your priority is determined by WHEN YOU GET YOUR PAYMENT IN, not when you say you want to go! So don't forget to get your deposit in early!
I've sent out individual emails to all the attendees of the Glacier shootout, letting you know what the balance is that is due for the trip.
The balance is due by 5/15. You can send it to me via PayPal at dsrshops at mac dot com.
The balance due is an ESTIMATE based on your current room assignment. If, when we get there, you end up in a different room, the actual cost of the room may be different, and we will adjust accordingly. Not to worry, though, the differences in cost are slight.
I just sent the final payment via my Graphic Visions PayPal account.
It says completed so I assume that you have received it.
FOR ANYONE: Does anyone know of a place that I can rent a Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM (or a Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM in lieu of the 600) for the Shootout? I am going to Alaska for two weeks (Sept 4-18) just before the Gracier Shootout 2007 so I will need to find a place to lease/rent one for up to a month. Any help is appreciated.

You might want to try K&S in Palo Alto, CA. They have an
extensive rental selection. K&S Review.
Thanks, Ian. They do carry the 600 as a rental. I will be getting in touch with them. Thanks again.
